‎DOUGLAS (Andrew)‎

‎Observations on an Extraordinary Case of Ruptured Uterus.‎

‎First edition, 74pp., recent quarter calf, marbled boards, red morocco title label lettered in gilt to spine. Andrew Douglas (1735/6?1806), physician and man-midwife, was born in Teviotdale, Roxburghshire, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He began work as a surgeon in the navy in 1756, and later practised at Deal before returning to Edinburgh in 1775 where he graduated MD. He settled in London with the intention of practising midwifery, and was for several years physician to the Charity for Delivering Poor Married Women at their Own Houses.?(ODNB). This pamphlet deals with a case where "he succeeded in the delivery of a child from the cavity of the abdomen, and the woman recovered; from whence he infers, that those accidents, which admit the child to escape through a rupture of the uterus, are not necessarily fatal, and that the delivery is to be effected, without having recourse to the caesarean operation, with more ease than has been imagined."?Goldson, An Extraordinary Case. Wellcome II, p. 481.‎

‎Relocating Gender in Dharmasastras [Hardcover]‎

‎About the bookAny text is written in a particular socio-cultural context and thus derives its meaning from it. Any attempt to study the text out of the context leads to several misconceptions. Though any text can be subjected to such misinterpretations but the texts written in great antiquity are highly vulnerable to such non-contextual study. The study on dharmaÐ?stras which are treated as one of the major sources of Hindu law is an important example of such non-contextual study. Unfortunately, most of the researchers in the field of dharmaÐ?stric studies apply the method of selective study. These Ï?stric texts have been used by different groups (viz. orthodox, reformers, colonialists, nationalists and feminists) for diverse purposes. What is significant to note is that the nationalists, reformists, traditionalists, colonialist and feminists have derived not only different but opposite meanings from the same Ï?stric texts. On the one hand, we have extollers of Ï?stras, on the other depreciators. But uncritical eulogisation as well as depreciation is not indicative of scholarly temperament. The Present work emphasises the need of holistic study of Ï?stric texts and women’s position therein. It tries to establish that both the critics and extollers of dharmaÐ?stric tradition lack in an honest portrayal of reality, which perhaps was situated in between the two extremes and was placed in the socio-historical milieu of the times. The present work strongly proposes that one would not be able to do justice with the study of Ï?stras as long as one applies the modern notions of atomic individual, liberty, unconditional rights and equality to evaluate these texts. About The Author:- Preeti Singh has completed her Ph.D in Political Science from Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. At present she is Assistant Professor at Vasanta College for Women, KFI, Rajghat, Varanasi. Her area of specialization is Gender Studies. ‎Women and Development: Approaches and Perspectives [Hardcover]‎

‎About the Book:-This edited volume is an outcome of various research papers on issues pertaining to women, with focus on health, nutrition, education, sustainable livelihood, condition in unorganized sector and impact of digitalization. The book further reflects on crosscutting issues of gender equality and position of women within the current socio-economic context. According to Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, development is a gradual process of expanding freedom equally for all people. But the role of women is often seen only in relation to domestic space. While the role of women within the household context is critical, it is most important to understand women's contribution to and connection with the larger development process. The Sustainable Development Goal 5 of the United Nations recognizes achieving gender equality and empowering all girls as a key milestone for all countries. While countries have been focusing on gender equality and inclusivity in all policies and programmes, research evidence has shown critical equity gaps still exist in women's workforce participation, health, education, employment and other such relevant areas. Gender equality is thus at the core of realizing all the sustainable development goals. Gender issues have remained invisible in several cases, as these are only being identified in situations where there is a crisis. Therefore, there is an ardent requirement of gender mainstreaming across all sectors and any form of resistance to gender equality must be eliminated. Gender mainstreaming and intersectionality as key processes have been largely recognized as impactful tools and methods by national, sub-national and international organizations in their advocacy and programmatic support to Governments and other community based programmes. ‎1840 & 1791. 1st Editions of 2 works bound together. Original Period half leather and boards. 8vo. 383; [xxiv], 247 pages. 21 cm. In French, title translates to English as, “Divorce in the Synagogue. ” David Paul Drach (1791 - 1868) was a Catholic convert from Judaism, and librarian of the College of Propaganda in Rome. Drach received his first instruction at the hands of his father, a renowned Hebraist and Talmudic scholar... (He) was married to Sara Deutz… in Oberwesel, Germany. Sara Deutz was the daughter of Rabbi Emanuel Deutz, chief Rabbi of Paris. Having obtained the rather unwilling permission of his father, in 1812 he went to Paris, where he received a call to a prominent position in the Central Jewish Consistory and at the same time fulfilled the duties of tutor for the children of Baruch Weil… On Maundy Thursday, 1823, he renounced Judaism in the presence of Archbishop Quélen… His wife, the only member of the family who remained Jewish, is reported by the Catholic Encyclopedia to have abducted the children. ” Drach’s work on “Divorce in the Synagogue” is bound together with a 1790 1st edition copy of “Agreement of Revlation and Reason…” which is a widely cited Catholic discussion on the laws and customs of divorce published just following the French Revolution. SUBJECT(S) : Divorce, Jewish Law, Catholic Law. OCLC lists 13 copies worldwide of Drach title, 1 in US. Some foxing but overall in very good condition in very attractive period binding. (FR-2-1)‎
