‎THE CODRUS PAINTER Iconography and Reception of Athenian Vases in the Age of Pericles‎

‎Dustjacket has very minor shelfwear. ; Wisconsin Studies in Classics; 256 pages; The Codrus Painter was a painter of cups and vases in fifth-century B. C. E. Athens with a distinctive style; he is named after Codrus, a legendary Athenian king depicted on one of his most characteristic vases. He was active as an artist during the rule of Pericles, as the Parthenon was built and then as the troubled times of the Peloponnesian War began. In contrast to the work of fellow artists of his day, the vases of the Codrus Painter appear to have been created almost exclusively for export to markets outside Athens and Greece, especially to the Etruscans in central Italy and to points further west.  Amalia Avramidou offers a thoroughly researched, amply illustrated study of the Codrus Painter that also comments on the mythology, religion, arts, athletics, and daily life of Greece depicted on his vases. She evaluates his style and the defining characteristics of his own hand and of the minor painters associated with him. Examining the subject matter, figure types, and motifs on the vases, she compares them with sculptural works produced during the same period. Avramidou’ s iconographic analysis not only encompasses the cultural milieu of the Athenian metropolis, but also offers an original and intriguing perspective on the adoption, meaning, and use of imported Attic vases among the Etruscans.‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). Else book has very light wear. DJ has some creasing. ; Painting was one of the major achievements of the Classical world. This book examines the development of mural and panel painting in the Classical world from the earliest Minoan and Cycladic frescoes of the Aegean Bronze Age to late Roman painting, from approximately 1800 B. C. To A. D. 400. It provides a comprehensive study of major monuments, including exciting new material that has been discovered in recent years and has transformed the field. It also offers a critical overview of scholarly debates and controversies on aspects of style, iconography, technique, and cultural context. This volume provides an up-to-date and much-needed overview of the monuments that are now known and of the ideas that have been generated about them.; 11.0 X 8.9 X 1.5 inches; 500 pages‎

‎A CATALOG OF IDENTIFIABLE FIGURE PAINTERS OF ANCIENT POMPEII, HERCULANEUM, AND STABIAE‎

‎Old price sticker to ffep. Small tear to front panel of DJ with a bit of loss. ; How did figure painting fit into the economic and artistic life of Pompeii? Did the best painters work in conjunction with one another? Did they paint only the important pictures in the best rooms and, if so, who painted the rest? Were the best houses the showplaces for these painters' work? If not, what was the function of these decorations in Pompeian life? L. Richardson, jr, has had a long and distinguished career writing about Roman art and architecture, particularly that of the companion town of Pompeii and its environs. In this newest work, he attributes many of the surviving wall decorations to particular painters. It is a catalog in the true sense, grouping the pictures by style and then by painter. Richardson describes the salient characteristics of a painter's work, and then inventories the pictures he attributes to that painter, together with cross-references to other catalogs and sources of good reproductions. ; 190 pages‎

‎CLASSICAL ZEUS A Study in Art and Literature‎

‎Scholar's name to ffep (Jenifer Neils). Very light pencilling to a couple of pages. Minor creasing along upper edge of DJ. ; The supreme god of the ancient Athenian pantheon, Zeus was often the subject of Athenian art, especially in vase painting and sculpture, as well as a dominant figure in Greek myths and legends. This book presents a detailed study of the depiction of Zeus in one particular classical Athenian art for--the red-figured vase. Offering a close comparison of the artistic and literary versions of the myths surrounding Zeus, including the Gigantomachy, births of the other gods, libations and offerings to the gods, and the Judgement of Paris, Arafat here examines the narrative technique of allusion against the artistic portrayals of Zeus in a contemporary religious and political context. Juxtaposing vase painting with other art forms, Arafat distinguishes the function of the different social contexts in which Zeus appears, exploring the role that the study of vase painting plays in the reconstruction of lost sculpture. ; Oxford Monographs On Classical Archaeology; 9.3 X 6.3 X 1.0 inches; 286 pages‎

‎HOMER AND THE ARTISTS Text and Picture in Early Greek Art‎

‎Initial in ink to front inner cover 'N' (Jenifer Neils). Else very light shelfwear. ; This is a study of the works of art from early Greece that have long been presented as "illustrations to Homer, " but that are argued here to be nothing of the kind. Early Greek artists showed no preference for Homeric subjects and, when their interests did coincide with Homer's, treated his account as, at best, one of the possible variants. Close descriptive analysis of texts and pictures and of the artists' aims, together with statistical evidence, provide the basis for the argument. ; 0.43 x 8.29 x 5.91 Inches; 200 pages‎
