‎Portraits from the Empire. The Ottoman world and the Ottomans from the 18th to 20th Century with selected works of art from the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Collection.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (33 x 24 cm). In English. Color ills. 155 p. Throughout the ages, the Orient has attracted the interest of the West. European intellectual and artists have been mesmerized since the earliest times by this presumably mysterious and relatively closed world. As a natural consequence, during various periods many artists, either by travelling themselves or by travelling in their imaginations, sought to discover the essence of the Orient, and depicted or expressed in their works either the real Orient or their own visions of it. The movement known as Orientalism in European art, which appeared in conjunction with the Romanticist movement of the 19th century, focused on the East, primarily in the lands of the Ottoman Empire. Even long before the rise of Orientalism in European art, many European artists, fascinated by their first glimpses of the mysterious East and by the Turquerie fashion which was the result of the new relations with the Ottoman world. For nearly two hundred years, starting from the 18th century, numbers of painters, some of whom became known as the Bosphorus Painters, worked intensively in the lands of the Empire and depicted the Ottoman world ib its various aspects, consequently engraving those images in mankind's visual memory. The exhibition Portraits from the Empire sheds light on a special part of this opulent world. Almost sixty paintings selected from the Suna and Inan Kiraç and Sevgi and Erdogan Gönül collections bring us face to face with the peoples of the Ottoman world, their portraits and portrayals, sometimes very familiar and sometimes remote, even nearly foreign, in their physiognomies. These paintings, most of them created before the eye of the camera replaced the human eye, in the times when observing, studying, interpreting and depicting the world was the priority of painters, present the lost faces of an era long past with amazing reality and vividness.‎

‎Güncel sanat ve ekoloji. [= Art and ecology now].‎

‎New New English Original bdg. HC. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In Turkish. 255, [3] p., color ills. Eco awareness has had an enormous impact across all cultural and political spectrums, not least in the art world. This accessible and thought-provoking book is the first in-depth exploration of the ways in which contemporary artists are confronting nature, the environment, climate change and ecology. Organized into six chapters, the book moves through the various levels of artists engagement, from those who act as independent commentators, documenting and reflecting on nature, to those who use the physical environment as the raw material for their art, and those committed activists who set out to make art that transforms both our attitudes and our habits. More than 300 illustrations feature the work of 95 artists and art collectives from all over the world, including The Artist as Family, Nyaba Leon Ouedraogo, Yao Lu, Tue Greenfort, Eva Jospin, Ravi Agarwal, Nadav Kander, Naoya Hatakeyama, Tattfoo Tan, Berndnaut Smilde, Simon Starling, and Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla.‎

‎KUTLUG ATAMAN.‎

‎Kutlug Ataman. The enemy inside me.= Içimdeki düsman. [Exhibition catalogue]. 10 Kasim 2010 - 06 Mart 2011, Istanbul Modern. Exhibition curator: Levent Çalikoglu.‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 129, [5] p., color ills. Kutlug Ataman's video and film works document the lives of marginalized individuals who explicitly give voice to their own obsessions, their relations with micro and macro power structures and verbalize straightforwardly their subliminal issues or sexuality. "I am not interested in exposing these people and turning them into a show," says Ataman, about his preference of these characters, "I only work with people that I see myself in." Ataman chooses narratives that dangle between reality and fiction in his work, which chiefly retains the documentary style. He questions how individuals manifest their identities through storytelling and how narratives are used to re-fabricate another 'self'. While offering an alternative to the categorizing structure of identity politics by putting the individual at the core, Ataman also interconnects significant issues of contemporary art today, such as historiography, social/individual identity, memory, plurality, myth, game and power. Individuals at the centre of Ataman's works narrate not over an academic, institutionalized and fixed representation of history, but over flexible performances such as personal myth-making, masking and shielding. While verbalizing personal stories, individuals expose the ease of verbal expression and persuasiveness of language. Ataman also shapes the screen layout of his video works into installation / sculpture like forms.‎

‎Artists in their time.= Sanatçi ve zamani. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. Prep. by Levent Çalikoglu.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 315, [5] p., color and b/w ills. Artists in their time.= Sanatçi ve zamani. [Exhibition catalogue]. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. Prep. by Levent Çalikoglu. Istanbul Modern's collection exhibition, "Artists in Their Time", focuses on how artists position their work and themselves within the concept of time. It suggests a conceptual field for examining, and reconciling, the links between an artist's time and societal, cultural, natural and universal time. It unites artists from very different periods, geographies and disciplines around common themes. "Artists in Their Time" takes as its starting point the words of Ahmet Hamdi Tanpinar (1901-1962), one of Turkey's foremost intellectual and literary figures: "I am neither within time nor completely outside of it." Tanpinar's views about time illuminate the process by which artists come to terms with the relationship of their work with the past, the present and the future. Accordingly, this exhibition groups together works of art from distinct geographies, periods and disciplines that share the same emotions with respect to a variety of themes: the intersecting responses of abstract art from different periods; the role of materials and studios in the production of art; the transformation from landscapes and still lifes to the present conception of nature; the search for identity; attraction to the Higher and the spiritual; existential questioning; body politics; feminist approaches; the complex problems imposed by the new urban culture; the struggle against war, death and destruction; life stories from Istanbul, a metropolis defined by water and embracing the sea; and efforts to understand the people of Anatolia.‎

The catalogue presents individual early works of Yannick Vu and Ben Jakober, together with their collaborative works beginning from 1993. ‎Plurivocality: Visual arts and music in Turkey.= Çok sesli: Türkiye'de görsel sanatlar ve müzik. Edited by N. Can Kantarci. [Exhibition catalogue]. 27 Haziran - 27 Kasim 2014.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 178 p., color and b/w ills. Within the scope of its 10th year, Istanbul Modern presents "Plurivocality", an exhibition investigating the interrelations between auditory and visual arts through a selection of contemporary artwork in Turkey. Exploring the close bond the visual arts have established with sound and music from past to present, "Plurivocality" reveals the special personal and social roles music plays in artistic processes. The exhibition features current works by artists that treat the visual and the auditory not as distinct disciplines, but rather as two fields that work in tandem. The paintings, sculptures, videos, and installations in the exhibition render sound and music visually as a theme, concept, or issue, using different forms of music and sound as metaphors and means of expression. The exhibition also serves as a source for understanding the cultural and sociopolitical role sound and music play in Turkey and how various music trends have influenced visual art practices. A research area at the entrance of the exhibition hall, "Repertoire" explores the intersections between music and the visual arts in Turkey as well as past collaborations between actors in the two fields. "Repertoire" is an initiative that examines Turkey's sociocultural history from the late Ottoman era to the 1980s via its reflections in the visual arts and music.‎

"Pera Museum in collaboration with the Amsterdam Museum is organizing an exhibition exploring the commencement of four hundred years of fruitful cooperation between Turkey and the Netherlands. It was on 14 March 1612 during the ruling of the Ottoman Empire that the first Ambassador of Dutch Republic, Cornelis Haga, arrived in Constantinople. The year 2012 marks the four hundredth year of this diplomatic relations. In collaboration with several other leading partners, including the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, Nationaal Archief in The Hague and Museum Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam, the exhibition aims to spread knowledge about historical and contemporary links between Amsterdam and Istanbul. The exhibition explores the historical and contemporary relations between two world cities and through these cities, implicitly also the two countries. 'Pioneers' and 'image (-forming)' are among the prominent themes. The exhibition is not intended as a complete survey of four centuries of diplomatic ties, but rather provides an attractive insight into the historical ties between Amsterdam and Istanbul, from 1612 to the present day. The exhibition is historical and social in approach, yet it also features important art works as well. A key section of the exhibition is a reconstruction of the Levantse Handel (Levant Trade) chamber that was based in the Town Hall (Palace on Dam Square) from the early 17th to early 19th century. A detailed inventory exists of the paintings and charts that were displayed on the walls of this powerful commercial office in Amsterdam. Many of these items, including an extensive series of portraits by Vanmour, from the collection of Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum will also be exhibited".‎

The Artist, The Sultan and his portrait: Mehmed the Conqueror according to Gentile Bellini.= Ressam, Sultan ve portresi: Gentile Bellini'ye göre Fatih Sultan Mehmet. [Exhition catalogue]. Edited by Münevver Eminoglu. Consultant: Günsel Renda. This exhibition consists of a single painting: the famous portrait that the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed the Conqueror had painted by the Italian artist Gentile Bellini about five hundred years ago and is now in the collection of the National Gallery of London. The painting is a magnificent souvenir of a brief 'golden age' in a reminder that, as early as the Renaissance and under the leadership of a strong and foresighted ruler, Ottoman society, which always looked wetward, hd the chance to grasp universal civilization.‎
