‎MARIO PRASSINOS, (1916-1985).‎

‎Mario Prassinos. In pursuit of an artist: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul.= Mario Prassinos. Bir sanatçinin izinde: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul. Curated by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (28 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 112 p., color and b/w ills. Mario Prassinos. In pursuit of an artist: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul.= Mario Prassinos. Bir sanatçinin izinde: Istanbul - Paris - Istanbul. Curated by Begüm Akkoyunlu Ersöz, Tania Bahar. The exhibition Mario Prassinos, In Pursuit of an Artist: Istanbul-Paris-Istanbul is centered on the art of Mario Prassinos, born into a Greek family of artists in Istanbul, whose artistic career began among the 20th-century Avant-Gardes in Paris. Curated by Seza Sinanlar Uslu with specialists Catherine Prassinos and Thierry Rye as consultants, the exhibition is accompanied by an exhaustive catalogue. Featuring a range of original and striking works by Mario Prassinos, including paintings, book illustrations, fabric samples, and engravings, the catalogue also contains articles written by the artist's daughter Catherine Prassinos, Enis Batur, and Seza Sinanlar Uslu. Catherine Prassinos focuses on her father's relationship with Istanbul and his memories of the city, whereas Enis Batur seeks, in the artist's works, the traces of the childhood he spent in Istanbul and the art milieu he was a part of during his years in France. Carefully examining the unique and outstanding personality of Prassinos, his style that extends from Surrealism to Realism, and his artistic stance against Fascism during World War II, Uslu particularly concentrates on the relationship the artist establishes with memory: "People do not recognize things (or other people), they remember them" says Prassinos, who reflects traces of the past from memory in his works. He presents to viewers the memories he recorded in memory, but could not access or recall exactly and clearly, as portraits that, in his words, could only be "created by a damaged memory.". This exhibition is centered on the art of Mario Prassinos, who was born in Istanbul into a Greek-Ottoman family and began his artistic career in Paris, among the 20th century avant-gardes. Bringing together a large selection of his works ranging from paintings and book illustrations to tapestries, portraits, and engravings, the exhibition reveals the striking and unique character of Prassinos and his distinctive style shifting from Surrealism to a more realistic approach. Curated by Seza Sinanlar Uslu, the exhibition welcomes back this original 20th-century artist to his birthplace to Pera, Istanbul, on the 100th anniversary of his birth. Mario Prassinos was born in Istanbul in 1916 to a Greek-Italian family that settled in Turkey many years before. In 1922, his family moved to France. He studied at the School of Oriental Languages and the Sorbonne. His first solo exhibition was held in 1938 at the Billiet-Vorms Gallery. Upon his return from the war in which he had fought as a volunteer, he broke away from surrealism and started a figurative period.‎

‎GRAYSON PERRY, (1960-).‎

‎Grayson Perry. Small differences.= Küçük farkliliklar. [Exhibition catalogue]. Prep. by Zeynep Ögel.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (29 x 25 cm). In English and Turkish. 91 p., color ills. The works of outstanding contemporary artist and 2003 Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry (b. 1960) will be exhibited at Pera Museum, including tapestries, ceramics and prints. Organised in collaboration with the British Council and curated by Linsey Young from the British Council's Visual Arts Team, the exhibition reflects the artist's unrelenting fascination with issues of the everyday, of religion, class, and identity. Well-known for his transvestite alter ego "Claire", Perry's largest single body of work to date, The Vanity of Small Differences, composed of six tapestries from the British Council Collection, will also be exhibited. Though working within the context of contemporary art, Perry remains a practitioner of artisanal crafts and a lover of beauty. He rejects conceptual art as the sole claimant of 'ideas' and champions the decorative and intimate qualities of handmade objects with stories to tell. The ceramic medium that first drew Grayson Perry to craft practice continues to be a critical, and is perhaps the most traditionally beautiful, element of his work. In this exhibition, alongside the series of "The Vanity of Small Differences" the artist's earliest work, a ceramic pot from 2002, the period during which Perry was nominated for the Turner Prize; culminating in a self-portrait, 'A Map of Days,' which was completed in 2014 for a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery are also included. Linsey Young, curator of the exhibition "Small Differences" states that visitors will be able to explore the magnificent interior world of Grayson Perry. Through the complex and physically detailed narratives, the audience can observe motifs, such as planes, shopping centres, churches and temples, mobile telephones and of course the artist's beloved teddy bear, Alan Measles, which appear again and again in many different guises.‎

Flemish artist Berlin De Bruyckere frequently uses material such as wax, wood, wool, horse skin and hair to produce sculptures and drawings that refer to the body's fragility, to suffering and desire. The new works the artist will show in Istanbul include "-009-, 2011-2012" and a new series entitled "The Wound". As part of the exhibition, two new works will be presented at the Çukurcuma Hamam. This space was included as an exhibition venue at the artist's request, who wished to engage her work in a dialogue with the local context and architectural heritage. This additional exhibition site also refers to the idea of cleansing the body, rubbing off the extra layer of skin, which in a sense implies moulting. Includes Nadar's hermaphrodite photographs in 1861 and examples from a rare Ottoman medical album which De Bruyckere has discovered in a library in Istanbul etc.‎

[Exhibition catalogue]. Art history, one of the liveliest and most exciting branches of knowledge of our times, emphasizes the need to continually re-examine, re-evaluate and re-interpret its primary ingredient - art works of the past. From fresh perspectives in the light of current information, thought and theory about these works, the discourse of knowledge that surrounds a work of art and is continually adapted. Women, Paintings, Stories / Transformation of the image of 'women' in Turkish painting in the modernization era is the product of just such an inclination and re-interpretation. In this exhibition of more than fifty works chosen from a variety of public institutions and private collections spanning the era from the Mesrutiyet / Second Constitution through the Republic, a voyage through the years was embarked upon, during which, the Turkish art of painting underwent a movement towards contemporaneity, within the framework of an exceptional and extremely meaningful theme, a reinterpretation of the transformation of the image of 'women'.‎

‎'IMÂD EL-DÎN MUHAMMED B. MUHAMMED B. HÂMÎD EL-KÂTIB AL-ISFAHÂNÎ, (1125-1202).‎

‎El-Bark el-Sâmî. [= Kitab al-Barq al-Shami]. Vol. 5. Abridged by Al-Bundârî. Published, prepared and introduction by Ramazan Sesen.‎

‎Fine Turkish Paperback. Pbo. Roy. 8vo. (24 x 17 cm). Reprint in Arabic; large introduction, and annotations in Turkish. [4], [xLvi], 236 p. El-Bark el-Sâmî. [= Kitab al-Barq al-Shami]. Abridged by Al-Bundârî. Published, prepared and introduction by Ramazan Sesen. Muhammad ibn Hamed Isfahan was a Persian historian, scholar, and rhetorician. He left a valuable anthology of Arabic poetry to accompany his many historical works and worked as a man of letters during the Zengid and Ayyubid period. He was born in Isfahan in the year 1125, and studied at the Nizamiyya school in Baghdad. He graduated into the bureaucracy, and held jurisdiction over Basra and Wasit. He then became a deputy of the vizier ibn Hubayra. After the death of ibn Hubayra, he went to Damascus in 1166 CE (562 Islamic Calendar) and entered the service of the qadi of Damascus, Kamal ad-Din. The qadi presented him to the Zengid Nur ad-Din, who appointed him a professor in the school he had established there, which then became known as the Imadiyya school in his honour. Nur ad-Din was later appointed to be his Chancellor. After the death of Nur ad-Din in 1174, Imad ad-Din was removed from all his bureaucratic duties, and was banished from the palace. He went to live in Mosul and later entered the service of Saladin, the Kurdish Sultan of Egypt during that time. When Saladin took control of Damascus, Saladin's vizier, al-Qadi al-Fadil, appointed him chancellor, and he also became al-Fadil's deputy. Saladin had been unsure of his talent because he was only a scribe, Imad ad-Din soon became one of the sultan's favourites. As chancellor he did not have to perform the everyday duties of the chancery scribes, and he had a lot of leisure time in Egypt. From then on he accompanied Saladin on all his campaigns. After a certain raid, he was chosen to kill one of the prisoners, but the prisoner was a child and was instead exchanged for a Muslim prisoner held by the Crusaders. Imad ad-Din was present at the Battle of Marj Uyun, the Battle of Hattin, and the subsequent campaign to expel the Crusaders from the Holy Land. At Acre, he criticized Saladin for giving away the city's treasure instead of spending it on the reconquest. At Beirut, he became ill, but was the only scribe capable of writing the terms of surrender. He had recuperated in time to see the aftermath of the Siege of Jerusalem (1187), where he again criticized Saladin's generosity; he was also disgusted by those in charge of the ransom who took bribes, and the rich Crusader nobles who took their treasures with them rather than ransoming the poor. He was present at Acre again during the Third Crusade when the Christians retook the city of Acre, and was among those who fled after the defeat. After Saladin's death in 1193, he began writing his biographies of the sultan. He wrote the Kitab al-Barq al-Shami, which is lost, but was abridged by al-Bundari. This study contains just 5th volume of manuscript abridged by Al-Bundârî.‎

‎Portraits from the Empire. The Ottoman world and the Ottomans from the 18th to 20th Century with selected works of art from the Suna and Inan Kirac Foundation Collection.‎

‎New English Paperback. Pbo. 4to. (33 x 24 cm). In English. Color ills. 155 p. Throughout the ages, the Orient has attracted the interest of the West. European intellectual and artists have been mesmerized since the earliest times by this presumably mysterious and relatively closed world. As a natural consequence, during various periods many artists, either by travelling themselves or by travelling in their imaginations, sought to discover the essence of the Orient, and depicted or expressed in their works either the real Orient or their own visions of it. The movement known as Orientalism in European art, which appeared in conjunction with the Romanticist movement of the 19th century, focused on the East, primarily in the lands of the Ottoman Empire. Even long before the rise of Orientalism in European art, many European artists, fascinated by their first glimpses of the mysterious East and by the Turquerie fashion which was the result of the new relations with the Ottoman world. For nearly two hundred years, starting from the 18th century, numbers of painters, some of whom became known as the Bosphorus Painters, worked intensively in the lands of the Empire and depicted the Ottoman world ib its various aspects, consequently engraving those images in mankind's visual memory. The exhibition Portraits from the Empire sheds light on a special part of this opulent world. Almost sixty paintings selected from the Suna and Inan Kiraç and Sevgi and Erdogan Gönül collections bring us face to face with the peoples of the Ottoman world, their portraits and portrayals, sometimes very familiar and sometimes remote, even nearly foreign, in their physiognomies. These paintings, most of them created before the eye of the camera replaced the human eye, in the times when observing, studying, interpreting and depicting the world was the priority of painters, present the lost faces of an era long past with amazing reality and vividness.‎
