‎New English Paperback. Large roy. 8vo. (23 x 18 cm). In English, Italian, and Turkish. 163 p., color and b/w photos. In between = Arada = Tra. [Exhbition catalogue]. Prep. by Ayse Orhun Gültekin. Twenty unreadable posters reflecting me that I've affixed at various locations in the city in order to communicate with the street. They were able to last for two days only, stuck between the publicity posters and Istanbul's fast changing pace. While the posters I've affixed on temporary panels or on anonymous walls also lasted for two days average, usually the people whose houses face that direction didn't want to see the posters and reacted. Additionally, these posters were collected by garbagemen the morning after. And the people passing by generally showed interest in the posters and tried to read them while questioning what they mean.‎

Edited by Haldun Dostoglu, Serra Karapinar Yentürk. Nejad Devrim is one of the prominent Turkish artists who spent a significant period of his career in Paris. He is a painter who flourished in the libertarian atmosphere of Paris where artistic practice was fuelled by an atmosphere open to criticism. His aim was different than the previous generation of Turkish intellectuals who came to Paris for a Western education only to replicate it in Turkey. Devrim was part of a generation who constituted the first modernists of Turkey. His works were contemporaneous to modernist artists of his period and looked to actively participate in the European art scene. He abandoned the figurative compositions that he commenced in Istanbul and produced works that would later be identified as the masterpieces of Turkish abstract art. He established a genuine place in the European art scene by carrying the multi-colored compositions of Byzantine mosaics to his works. Devrim is recognized as the most important representer of geometrical and lyrical abstraction in Turkish history of art. As a Lyrical Abstract artist, Nejad Devrim believed that nature should not be imitated, but rather its meaning explored. He depicted what he found in lyrically expressive paintings in which color is used as a powerful compositional element. He regarded his paintings as places in which chance encounters and unknowns might be discovered. (Source: Galeri Nev).‎

‎GARO KÜRKMAN.‎

‎Armenian painters in the Ottoman Empire. 2 volumes set.‎

‎New English Original bdg. Dust wrapper. In the original slipcase. Folio. (33 x 24 cm). Edition in English. 2 volumes set: (988 p.), 1600 color ills. and many plates. This lavishly illustrated, deeply researched, two volume collection is the outcome of 15 years of exploration into Armenian painters, both amateur and professional, who were born in the Ottoman Empire. The book contains condensed biographies of artists, even those for whom it was impossible to find any existing paintings. It also features several paintings for which no biographical information on the artist could be found. The collection features extensive study of the styles and signatures used by the painters, who were all born in the Ottoman Empire but ended up scattered throughout the world. The author made efforts to contact the artists' families when possibly, sought information in church records and obituaries, and explored the archives of Armenian and Ottoman Turkish newspapers. The books include details on roughly 450 Armenian painters born in the Ottoman Empire from the 17th century until 1923. A true labor of love, this work's collection of glorious color photographs brings to life the skilled Armenian artists who once populated modern day Turkey. This is a treasure of information and beauty collected in one beautiful, boxed, two-book set. By the same researcher and author who produced the wonderfully detailed books Anatolian Weights and Measures and Ottoman Silver Marks.‎

‎PETER HRISTOFF, (1958-).‎

‎Memento Istanbul: Hristoff family archive.= Hristoff aile arsivi. [Exhibition catalogue].‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 256 p., b/w and color ills. The new exhibition of the Yapi Kredi Culture Arts and Publishing (YKKSY) complex on Istiklal Street is a journey into the memory of a family of three generations of artists over hundred years. Originally from Bulgaria, the Hristoff family first came to Istanbul in 1923, and then immigrated to New York in 1963. The three generations of artists document Istanbul, starting with black and white photographs in the 1920s and 1930s. Peter Dimiter Hristoff was right in the midst of the first days of the Republic, and began collecting ephemera. This habit was continued by his son Dimiter Hristoff and grandson Peter, who is one of the curators of the "Memento Istanbul: Hristoff Family Archive" exhibition. "From Sofia to Paris, from Paris to California, from California to New York," Peter Hristoff, a New York based artist, educator and co-curator of the exhibition says. His great grandfather, an orphan born in the mid 1800s, he says, was raised by a farmer family who called him 'garden boy'... (Source: TRT World).‎

‎New English Paperback. 4to. (29 x 24 cm). In English and Turkish. 172 p., b/w and color ills. The exhibition 'Coulisse: Hagop Ayvaz, A Chronicler of Theater' has been brought to life by the guidance of Hrant Dink Foundation with the collaboration of the Theatre Foundation of Turkey and Yapi Kredi Culture, Arts and Publishing with the support of the Chrest Foundation, Consulate General of the Kingdom of Netherlands, the French Embassy and Civil Rights Defenders will be open to visitors from 15th of December 2020 to 21st of February 2021. The exhibition will be welcoming visitors from 15th of December 2020 until 21st of February 2021 has been prepared by the guidance of Hrant Dink Foundation with the collaboration of the Theatre Foundation of Turkey and Yapi Kredi Culture, Arts and Publishing begins with the personal theatre archive of an Istanbulite theater player and publisher Hagop Ayvaz (1911-2006), to shed light on theater history of Turkey within the context of collective memory, identity and space. After the death of Hagop Ayvaz in 2006, the archive was donated to the Agos newspaper and then to Hrant Dink Foundation, composed of nearly 600 manuscripts and printed texts, over 500 periodicals, magazines and brochures in Armenian and Turkish languages, magazines and brochures, as well as about 12 thousand visual materials including photographs, posters, caricatures, clippings, invitations, drawings and postcards. In 2019, with the donation of some of the personal belongings of Ayvaz, the awards he has received, and a complete collection of the 1104 issues of "Kulis", the culture and arts magazine in Armenian language he has published from 1946 to 1996 to Hrant Dink Foundation, the archive was further completed. Over the years, Hrant Dink Foundation created a catalogue for the archive and digitalized it, and this online archive will be to researchers simultaneously with the opening of the "Coulisse: Hagop Ayvaz, A Chronicler of Theater" exhibition. Constituting the basis of the exhibition, the Hagop Ayvaz archive encompasses a wide range of original materials about theater players, companies and venues in the Ottoman Empire and Turkey remaining from the mid-19th century up until today. Hagop Ayvaz used the words "my paradise" to describe his study room composed of books, magazines, posters and photographs that he had collected since his youth; this tender metaphor also gives us hints about the possible links that can be established between his passion, namely theater, archives and collective memory. The exhibition offers a selection of the photographs, magazines, manuscripts and printed texts from the archive, divided into three main parts. The first part presents the theater production and activities in Istanbul in Armenian, in parallel to the lifetime of Hagop Ayvaz, a devotee of theater since his youth-from being a walker on to a director, from being a columnist to a publisher. The second part touchs upon the impact of the "Kulis" magazine within and outside of Turkey published by Ayvaz from 1946 to 1996, in line with the major artistic and political developments within this framework. The final section focuses various artists, companies, plays and venues which constituted the cornerstones of the theater history of the Ottoman Empire and Turkey, inviting the visitors to explore the linkage between them all so as to rediscover the history of theater in Turkey. The catalogue which has the same name with the exhibition has also been prepared in both English and Turkish by Yapi Kredi Culture, Arts and Publishing, not only invites the visitors to the "coulisse" of Hagop Ayvaz's endeavors, but also allows the visitors to discover the theatre of history of Turkey from a pluralistic perspective. The exhibition reminds the visitors the place and importance of arts and culture in the culture of arts and culture in the culture of living together, the "coulisse" that was built up by devotion and sustained by commitment and solidarity.‎

‎MEHMET GÜLERYÜZ, (Turkish painter), (1938-).‎

‎Mehmet Güleryüz. With one's eyes open.= Göz göre göre. 07.03-27.04.2013 [Exhibition catalogue]. Preface by Nan Freeman.‎

‎New English Paperback. Large demy 8vo. (21 x 16,5 cm). In English and Turkish. [48] p., color ills. "Güleryüz's art is addressed to a broad audience; he assumes alert, self-aware and participatory viewers conversant in general with artistic forms, but more important, engaged with issues of society and life itself. Although he is thoroughly a member of his profession, he does not practice an art whose primary reference is to art world itself, to the context of historical avantgardism, or to specialty issues pertaining to art alone... He does not worry about being modern, he worries about being true; because of his engagement with the conditions and concerns of his time he is by definition a man of his times, and modern therefore but not because of a separate ideological art." (Text of Nan Freeman).‎
