Each Plate Has Small Glue Marks On Reverse Where They Were Tipped In To An Album. Antoine Arnauld 1612 - 1694 - Le Grand As Contemporaries Called Him To Distinguish Him From His Father - Was A French Roman Catholic Theologian Philosopher And Mathematician. He Was One Of The Leading Intellectuals Of The Jansenist Group Of Port-Royal And Had A Very Thorough Knowledge Of Patristics. He Was One Of The First To Adopt The Philosophy Of Ren� Descartes Though With Certain Orthodox Reservations Relating To Meditations On First Philosophy; And Between 1683 And 1685 He Had A Long Battle With Nicolas Malebranche On The Relation Of Theology To Metaphysics. On The Whole Public Opinion Leant To Arnauld's Side. When Malebranche Complained That His Adversary Had Misunderstood Him Boileau Silenced Him With The Question: "My Dear Sir Whom Do You Expect To Understand You If M. Arnauld Does Not" Later Arnauld Was Engaged In An Extensive Correspondence With Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Regarding The Latter's Views Detailed In His "Discourse On Metaphysics" 1686. Popular Regard For Arnauld's Penetration Was Much Increased In His L'art De Penser Commonly Known As The Port-Royal Logic Which Kept Its Place As An Elementary Text-Book Until The 20Th Century And Is Considered A Paradigmatical Work Of Term Logic. Arnauld Came To Be Regarded As Important Among The Mathematicians Of His Time; One Critic Described Him As The Euclid Of The 17Th Century. After His Death His Reputation Began To Wane. Contemporaries Admired Him As A Master Of Intricate Reasoning; On This Jacques-B�nigne Bossuet The Greatest Theologian Of The Age Agreed With Henri Fran�ois D'aguesseau The Greatest Lawyer. Maria Luisa Caterina Cecilia Cosway Ma-Rye-Ah; N�e Hadfield; 11 June 1760 - 5 January 1838 Was An Italian-English Artist Who Exhibited At The Royal Academy Of Arts In London. She Also Worked In France Where She Cultivated A Large Circle Of Friends And Clients And Later In Italy. She Commissioned The First Portrait Of Napoleon To Be Seen In England. Her Paintings And Engravings Are Held By The British Museum The New York Public Library And The British Library. Her Work Was Included In Recent Exhibits At The National Portrait Gallery In London In 1995-96 And The Tate Britain In 2006. Cosway Was An Accomplished Composer Musician And Society Hostess With Her Husband Painter Richard Cosway. In 1784 The Cosways Moved Into Schomberg House Pall Mall And Developed A Fashionable Salon For London Society. Richard Cosway Was Principal Painter Of The Prince Of Wales And Maria Served As Hostess To Artists Members Of Royalty Including The Prince And Politicians Including Horace Walpole Gouverneur Morris And James Boswell. She Could Speak Several Languages And Due To Her Travels In Italy And France She Gained An International Circle Of Friends. These Included Angelica Schuyler Church And The Artist John Trumbull. Maria Cosway Organised Concerts And Recitals For Her Guests. She Became Known As "The Goddess Of Pall-Mall". She Developed A Close And Probably Short Romantic Relationship With The Widowed American Statesman Thomas Jefferson In 1786 While He Served In Paris As The American Envoy To France. Before Jefferson Left Paris He Wrote Her "I Am Going To America And You Are Going To Italy. One Of Us Is Going The Wrong Way For The Way Will Ever Be Wrong That Leads Us Further Apart." Cosway Introduced Jefferson To Her Friend Angelica Schuyler Church The Sister-In-Law Of His Rival Alexander Hamilton. In France Cosway Founded A Girls' School In Paris Which She Directed From 1803 To 1809. Soon After It Closed She Founded A Catholic Convent And Girls' School In Lodi Northern Italy Which She Directed Until Her Death. Maria's Brother George Hadfield Became An Architect And Designed Arlington House In Virginia; It Later Was Owned By Robert E. A FINE MINIATURE PAINTING OF A FUNERAL SCENE FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN LATIN
BEGINNING OF THE OFFICE OF THE DEAD
Paris early 15th century. 178 x 125 mm. 7 x 5". Text in single column four lines on recto 15 lines on verso in an excellent gothic book hand. A FINE SQUARE MINIATURE SHOWING A FUNERAL SERVICE two priests reciting from an elevated lectern and next to a large draped coffin mourners in black seated to the left the activity taking place inside a space enclosed by elegant columns and under a vaulted ceiling a lovely four-line initial beneath it in burnished gold and several colors infilled with ivy leaves in white and orange other one- or two-line initials in blue with red penwork or on the verso in burnished gold and colors THE MINIATURE SURROUNDED BY AN EXQUISITE FULL BORDER OF IVY LEAVES in colors or gold on painted and hairline stems. Remains of mounting hinge at top a few speckles a bit of yellowing and slight wrinkling in margins but the leaf very well preserved in general with no significant flaking of paint and with the gold still bright. Apart from those relatively few copies with illustrated calendars the miniatures found in Books of Hours are almost entirely devoted to retrospective Bible scenes that are obviously outside the experience of the illuminator; it is only in the present kind of funeral scene at the beginning of the Office of the Dead that we can see a contemporaneous rendering of a scene from the daily life of the Middle Ages. Miniatures that begin the Office of the Dead vary more in iconographic terms than any of the others that recur in the Book of Hours and while our painting is typical in subject matter and design it is noteworthy in at least a couple of ways. The frame and border here are beautifully executed in the style of the Boucicaut Master with much delicate and very elaborate painting all of which is shown to good advantage inside unusually comfortable margins. And although the miniature itself shows in general a relatively primitive attempt at perspective for example the pews and the altar are steeply raked the presence of the lovely slender column in the foreground in concert with the darkened vaulting behind the altar gives the painting a convincing sense of depth.The work here was done by an artist under Parisian influence and the developed architecture suggests that the painter was familiar with the Burial Services compositions created by Parisian illuminators in the 1410s. see Millard Meiss "French Painting in the Time of Jean de Berry: Boucicaut Master" London 1968 figs. 135-50 and 172-74. unknown

Pleasing contemporary midnight blue straight-grain morocco covers framed by plain gilt rules outlining Greek key and palmette blind rolls raised bands compartments with central gilt fleuron radiating densely blind-tooled foliage gilt-ruled turn-ins all edges gilt; WITH AN EXCELLENT FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF DOVER CASTLE. A PRESENTATION COPY with slightly foxed signed autograph letter bound in opposite title with letter offsets: "The Author / begs Mr. E. S. Stephenson's / acceptance of this Volume / as a token of his / friendship and esteem. / R. S." Front pastedown with unidentified armorial bookplate. Full list of subscribers including addenda. A bit of wear to corners and joints a very small ink stain to edge of preliminary leaves visible at upper left background of fore-edge painting not affecting primary image otherwise a fine copy clean and fresh internally in a lustrous binding. This is a decorative binding highlighted by an atmospheric fore-edge scene of Dover Castle painted by a skilled artist. The view depicts a cottage along a country road in the foreground with Dover Castle looming in the background against a hazy sky; a small figure presumably the cottage owner stands right of center. The scene is well designed with the eye moving from the cottage and castle towers at left toward the sea at the far right the foreground landscape's more saturated color anchoring the composition. Of particular note is how this foregound contrasted with the background's washed color creates the illusion of perspective. Despite the light browns and greens at the bottom of the scene the painting is essentially gray and particularly tranquil as a result. The skill of the painter here is seen most notably in his delicate and subtle shading a challenge that defeats even very able practitioners of the fore-edge painting. As always the dating of the painting is difficult but we think that it was done much closer to the time of publication than to the present day. Our author the Rev. Robert Stevens was a celebrated speaker who ultimately rose to become the head of the chapter of canons at Rochester Cathedral. Printed for John Booth unknown

Contemporary burgundy straight-grain morocco covers with multiple borders intricately rolled in gilt and blind gilt-decorated raised bands spine panels elaborately tooled in gilt gilt-rolled turn-ins all edges gilt. Front joint and hinge and upper corners repaired with some though not consummate skill. WITH AN IMPRESSIVE FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF EDINBURGH. With engraved frontispiece one tailpiece vignette and 48 plates etched by James Fittler from drawings by John Claude Nattes. Front pastedown with two bookplates of the important Pittsburgh insurance executive William McGill Duff 1878-1949 and a card inscribed to him from Edward A. Woods dated 22 Dec. 1925. Title signed and dated 1820 on upper margin by original owner Hugh Booth. Avery Library p. 339. Rear joint with five-inch crack at head though the board still firmly attached the binding with significant wear and soiling variable never severe offsetting from images to text leaves a few plates with light foxing to margins other minor defects; obviously with condition issues but the volume redeemed by its very unusual well-preserved and quite pleasing fore-edge painting. Even with its warts and freckles this is a volume of particular appeal first for its topographical content and especially for its memorably vast painting. The scene on the fore edge is a very skillfully painted view of Edinburgh looking south from Craigleith the composition being especially remarkable because of the sweeping impression of the location that it communicates. This results of course because of the extraordinary width of the fore-edge space allotted to the artist: at 16 1/2 inches 430 mm. from end to end this is the broadest fore-edge painting we've ever seen. The painting also has considerable depth with two herders and their cows in the right foreground outcroppings of rock for which Craigleith is famous in the left foreground and Edinburgh far in the distance its commanding castle seeming to touch the sky many miles away. Given the colors used copper orange in the trees for example the puffy treatment of the clouds and the dabbing style with which the paint has been applied this is almost certainly the work of the so-called "Dover Painter" who is described at length in the previous item. Our view is based upon Thomas H. Shepherd's drawing "Edinburgh from Craigleith" engraved by W. Tombleson which originally appeared in John Britton's 1829 "Modern Athens." Initially published in 1804 Fittler's work is an illustrated celebration of Scotland's most interesting antiquities castles towns and picturesque scenery with scenes being drawn using a wide impressionistic pen. Bryan notes that Fittler 1758-1835 "entered the schools of the Royal Academy in 1778 and was elected an Associate Engraver in 1800. He distinguished himself by numerous works after English and foreign masters of different subjects and character; and book illustrations by him abound." Contemporary red straight-grain morocco covers bordered by gilt rule and cresting blind roll flat spine divided into panels by single gilt rules gilt titling turn-ins with gilt bead roll marbled endpapers all edges gilt. WITH A FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF DUMBARTON CASTLE AND THE RIVER CLYDE. In a paper slipcase. Joints significantly rubbed but this well masked with dye small notch out at top of front joint slight wear with a bit of loss at corners and spine ends minor spotting and darkening to boards other trivial defects externally but the binding still firm and entirely satisfactory. Scattered foxing at edges leaves less than bright because of paper stock but the text still fresh and the dramatic fore-edge painting well preserved. The action in the fore-edge painting here is an appropriate complement to Scott's "Lay of the Last Minstrel" a tale chronicling the trials of a pair of lovers whose bitterly feuding border families resort to sorcery to keep them apart. Set in the 16th century the narrative poem comprises six cantos of rhymed iambic tetrameter couplets glossed by Scott's extensive notes and introduced with an unsigned preface probably Scott's which calls the poem a "Metrical Romance." When it was first published in 1805 the "Minstrel" made Scott the most important Scottish poet of the 19th century before Lord Byron. In our painting the number of ships depicted in the river before the ancient fortress suggests something between a busy harbor and a naval skirmish. There are two tall ships in full rigging four sailboats and two smaller rowed vessels. We can see sailors and other hands hard at work struggling with sails and oars. In the background the black basalt cliffs and the forbidding Dumbarton Castle provide a contrasting stolidity to the marine activity. Because of its characteristic palette and the treatment of the sky the work here appears to be that of the so-called "Dover Painter" the name given by Jeff Weber to the artist who executed very high quality painted fore edges in the 1920s and 1930s. He did work for the famous London bookseller Marks & Company for Dawson's Bookshop in Los Angeles and for J. W. Robinson Company the Los Angeles department store. Estelle Doheny 1875-1958 whose library comprised one of the great collections of the 20th century bought actively from Dawson's and Weber estimates that approximately half of the very considerable number of especially fine fore-edge paintings in the Doheny collection in Camarillo California were done by the Dover Painter. WITH AN UNUSUALLY PLEASING FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF ELY CATHEDRAL. Housed in a very fine later fleece-lined black morocco pull-off case by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. Recto of front free endpaper with the heavily gilt morocco bookplate of Lucy Smith Battson; verso with neat inked inscription in a 19th century hand: "Ely Cathedral / Cambridge." Rear free endpaper with the ticket of Los Angeles department store J. W. Robinson Co. Inoffensive soiling to covers light offsetting in the bed of the text but the binding lustrous and with only trivial wear and clean and fresh internally--a very pretty book in pleasing condition. This is an attractive binding highlighted by a colorful and animated fore-edge painting depicting Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire. The painting is finely composed richly detailed and skillfully executed. The cathedral is framed by a verdant landscape in the foreground featuring a small herd of stout cows at left two male figures at center trodding a path toward the cathedral and a horse-drawn cart with driver and aide travelling the same path away from Ely. Two well-dressed young women at right gaze at the Medieval church and the tableau is flanked by a copses of trees the whole beneath a late afternoon deep azure sky with billowing clouds. It is unusual to see so many figures and such activity within a fore-edge tableau particularly this well defined--the detail in the architecture and especially the trees is particularly impressive. The artist is clearly the so-called "Dover Painter" the name given by Jeff Weber to the artist who produced very high quality painted fore edges in the 1920s and 1930s. He did work for the famous London bookseller Marks & Company for Dawson's Bookshop in Los Angeles and for J. W. Robinson Company the Los Angeles department store. Written by the lawyer and lay theologian Erskine 1788-1870 at a time of spiritual doubt these "Remarks" argue the truth of Christianity based on the moral and spiritual needs of mankind. Reflecting a moderate Calvinism the book was the first of a half dozen works through which our author exerted considerable influence in the world of 19th century British theology. WITH A PLEASING FORE-EDGE PAINTING OF THE HARBOR AND SEASIDE TOWN OF WHITBY. With four engravings depicting scenes from "The Minstrel." Front pastedown with engraved bookplate of John Ashley Warre. Spine slightly and uniformly sunned to a darker red joints and extremities a bit rubbed though well masked with dye paper faintly toned light offsetting occasional spotting or staining but still quite a decent copy the binding solid and lustrous the text smooth and fresh and the painting very well preserved. The very pleasing fore-edge painting here has depth and movement from the fisherman on shore in the foreground to the cresting waves in the harbor and the ships bobbing in the distance. The ruins of the great abbey tower over the scene and the lighthouse stands tall at the edge of the shore. The precipitous cliffs rolling hills and curving shoreline provide an undulant frame for the choppy sea. A Scottish poet and professor of moral philosophy Beattie 1735-1803 is best remembered for the title poem here an unfinished work in Spenserian stanzas that was first printed in 1771-74. As perhaps the first work in English that might properly be entitled "The Growth of a Poet's Mind" his "Minstrel" anticipates Wordsworth's "Prelude" and its emphasis on the great benefits of solitude represents an early manifestation of one of the key notions of Romanticism. Former owner John Ashley Warre 1787-1860 was a scion of the famous port-trading family and a long-serving member of Parliament for the Liberal Party. Printed for J. Mawman unknown

Churton and the date 1817 raised bands spine lavishly gilt in compartments filled with foliage and small tools emanating from a central fleuron gilt titling and turn-ins all edges gilt. WITH A SPLENDID LATER PAINTING OF MOUNT ETNA ON THE FORE EDGE. In a recent plush-lined blue folding cloth box with gilt spine titling. With ink stamp of Bolton Public Library on verso of title and first page of text. Lowndes IV 2777. Corners slightly bumped boards a little faded first two gatherings mildly foxed isolated rust spots or faint freckled foxing but still AN ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE COPY the handsome binding virtually unworn the text clean and smooth and the unusual fore-edge painting very well preserved. This scholarly edition of Heyne's acclaimed Virgil comes in a fine contemporary binding with a noteworthy fore-edge painting. Dibdin Gibbon and Sandys all praise Heyne's edition of Virgil and Sandys credits him with being "the first who with any decisiveness attempted . . . to read in the writings of the Ancients not their language alone or even their detached opinions and records but their spirit and character their way of life and thought." First published in Leipzig in 1767-88 Heyne's edition was deemed "incomparable" by Dibdin and even inspired a poem by William Cowper "On Receiving Heyne's Virgil from Mr. Hayley." Our painting shows a coastal landscape in Sicily rendered in strong greens and deep blues. There is a bay on the left and a tiny village perched above the sandy beach with white-capped Mount Etna emitting a thin wisp of smoke in the background. Purplish clouds are gathering in the distance which combined with the smoking volcano lend a frisson of foreboding to an otherwise tranquil scene. As often the age of the painting is difficult to determine: not the work of any recognizable painter it is very probably not as old as the binding yet is almost certainly not something done during the last 100 years. In any case the quality of its execution is high and the subject matter--which is something quite different from the typical fore-edge design--is entirely appropriate for the classical contents of the book. The attractive binding done for Anglican clergyman and scholar Thomas Townson Churton 1798-1865 is exactly what one would expect to find in the library of a gentleman scholar. Impensis J. Verso with elaborate metalcut compartmentalized border featuring mischievous putti and grotesques the martyrdom of Saint Sebastian and a woman shearing a sheep; the same side with 18 one-line hand-painted initials in gold on a blue or red ground two similar two-line initials and one three-line foliated initial in gold on a red ground; recto WITH A RICHLY PAINTED AND ILLUMINATED WOODCUT OF THE MASSACRE OF THE INNOCENTS with a glimpse of the flight into Egypt on the left side of the scene. A touch of wrinkling to lower outer corner verso with remnants of mounting tape otherwise A VERY FINE LEAF the printing clear and fresh the colors vivid and the gold lustrous. The massacre depicted here appears to be taking place in Herod's throne room as if he had ordered it for his own entertainment. Seated in the center of the piece on a massive gold throne he views the heartbreaking chaos before him impassively ignoring an angry women who is lifting her bleeding infant up to him as if to say "See what you've done!" The mothers here are not wailing in grief but are angrily fighting for their sons' lives. In the foreground a soldier pushes a golden-haired woman out of the way in order to finish off the dazed and wounded infant she and her companion are attempting to shield. On either side soldiers have raised swords to smite the helpless tots and to the right of Herod a bleeding infant looks pitifully up at the armored solder who holds him by the arm ready to deliver the fatal blow. In the upper right we see a baby impaled on a spear. A glimpse of hope through an open window mitigates the horror of the gruesome scene: we see Joseph leading a donkey bearing the Virgin and the Christ Child as they flee to Egypt blessed by golden rays streaming down from heaven. The action here is dramatic intense and memorable; the colors are vivid the heavy use of gold adding light to an overwhelmingly sober subject.
