The evolution of shipbuilding navigation geographical knowledge and trade and politics that made possible this absolutely crucial discovery forms a significant part of history's most exciting chapter. The voyagers were daring men whose exploits in the context of their times were even more challenging than those of astronauts of the present. L'auteur analyse la carrière des quelque 500 membres des directoires des quinze plus grands groupes industriels allemands de 1933 à 1989, fournissant de nombreux points de comparaison avec leurs homologues français. Il décrit les modes d'accès aux fonctions dirigeantes (âge, niveau d'études, appartenance sociale, responsabilités antérieures), puis étudie l'histoire des relations entre monde patronal et pouvoir politique. De multiples exemples portent tant sur les rapports entre nazisme et milieux d'affaires que sur l'attitude des autorités d'occupation ou sur les conflits survenus, depuis le début des années 1950, entre autorités de tutelle et dirigeants des grandes entreprises publiques. Se trouve ainsi confirmée la stabilité du «modèle allemand»: un haut degré de professionnalisme s'y allie à la longévité des carrières et au prestige social pour conférer au grand patronat les caractères d'une élite relativement fermée, soucieuse d'autonomie face au monde extérieur, qu'il s'agisse des banques, dont Hervé Joly nie toute influence exclusive sur les grandes entreprises industrielles, ou du pouvoir politique, dont il relate avec finesse les difficultés, quelle que soit la période, à imposer ses vues. On est loin ici, tant du monde patronal français, marqué par les rapports avec la haute fonction publique, que des managers anglo- saxons, aptes à gérer des entreprises appartenant à toutes sortes de secteurs, mais ne restant en place que pour de courtes périodes de temps. Enfin l'ouvrage montre bien qu'en dépit de cette stabilité, le patronat industriel allemand a toujours su évoluer en cas de besoin: adaptation aux mutations économiques, de l'âge du charbon à celui de l'électronique, adaptation aux circonstances politiques aussi, qui explique la facilité avec laquelle il a su traverser le nazisme, puis la denazification imposée par les vainqueurs. C'est bien dans cette capacité d'adaptation que réside la clé d'une légitimité qui, outre-Rhin, n'a jamais été sérieusement remise en cause durant toute la période étudiée."
