‎On connaît surtout Raspoutine à travers les légendes du "moine scélérat", du moujik sadique, le despote occulte qui serait la cause de la tragédie impériale et de la révolution russe. Dans ce livre, l'auteur apporte au public une étude – qu'il a souhaitée objective – sur ce que fut réellement cet homme doué d'un pouvoir magique. On le découvre dans son enfance, sa jeunesse sibérienne au milieu de sa famille, de sa femme et de ses enfants. Certes, Raspoutine n'était pas un saint mais, animé d'un réel amour de sa patrie – la Russie – et de Nicolas II son souverain, ayant toujours voulu la paix de son pays, il aurait certainement obtenu du tsar sa non-participation à la guerre de 1914-1918 et il l'aurait convaincu de rester neutre si, déjà victime d'une tentative d'assassinat, il ne s'était trouvé, en août 1914, grièvement blessé au fond d'un lit d'hôpital à Tioumen. Le prince Félix Youssoupoff l'attirera plus tard dans un guet-apens, où il trouvera la mort la plus affreuse qui se puisse imaginer. L'auteur n'a pas de motif pour accuser ou plaindre. Il a vécu toute son enfance dans l'atmosphère de l'émigration russe à Paris. Son grand-père fut chambellan d'Alexandre III, son père appartint à l'Ecole des Cadets de Saint-Petersbourg et fut l'un des derniers diplomates de la Russie tsariste à Paris. Son oncle, le prince Alexandre Mourousy, accompagnait Nicolas II dans toutes les visites officielles en qualité d'aide de camp et fut un pionnier de l'aviation russe. Il se conduisit en héros pour la France et mourut à Paris de longues années après la guerre, enveloppé dans le drapeau français et Grand-croix de la Légion d'Honneur. L'auteur a connu la morgue des intrigants, des aristocrates – les vrais et les faux – l'outrecuidance des imbéciles – toujours mieux renseignés que les autres – la retenue des âmes étouffées par la peur ou les scrupules, l'hypocrisie de certains témoins, la quête passionnée des historiens, les mendiants de la renommée, la sottise des petits nobles martyrisés par leur exil, mais il n'a voulu retenir de tout cela que les faits précis, dont la plupart lui furent confiés par un ancien fonctionnaire de l'Okrana (police secrète impériale), Jean Jacoby, connu à Paris pour ses ouvrages historiques sur la Russie et qui mourut à Bruxelles de manière ambiguë, il y a bien des années.‎

‎"Venu tout jeune et d'un bond au premier rang dans la Résistance", ainsi que l'écrit en tête d'un portrait flatteur le général de Gaulle dans ses Mémoires de guerre, Jacques Chaban-Delmas l'est resté dans la vie politique et a suscité des rivalités et des attaques à la mesure de ses réussites. Pendant un demi-siècle, il a occupé le devant de la scène : général de brigade à vingt-neuf ans (1944), cet inspecteur des finances devient député à trente et un ans (1946) et maire de Bordeaux l'année suivante, pour un bail de presque cinq décennies. Cette étoile montante de la IVe République, trois fois ministre, est choisie par les députés comme premier président de l'Assemblée nationale de la Ve République. Chaban réussira l'exploit d'être au perchoir sous trois présidents de la République différents, illustration de son talent manœuvrier et de son sens de l'équilibre. Sa carrière politique culmine en 1969 lorsque Georges Pompidou le nomme Premier ministre et lui confie la tâche d'incarner la réforme. Après un discours sur la Nouvelle Société qui marque les esprits, il s'emploie pendant trois ans (juin 1969-juillet 1972) à inscrire dans les faits un programme économique et social qui fait passer la France à l'âge de la modernité industrielle. Jacques Chaban-Delmas a aussi connu les épreuves sans lesquelles il n'est pas de destin complet : ses ennemis ont tenté de l'impliquer dans certains scandales politico-financiers ; lors de la campagne présidentielle de 1974, ses amis gaullistes ont préféré la candidature de Giscard d'Estaing à la sienne. Blessé mais non vaincu, Jacques Chaban-Delmas a su revenir au premier rang de la scène politique. Le temps écoulé depuis qu'il s'est retiré de la politique active permet de cerner l'homme d'Etat dont la gauche reconnaît les réalisations et dont la droite revendique aujourd'hui la vision.‎

This copy comes from the library of Lucretia Thatcher Perry Osborn 1858-1930 with her bookplate to the front pastedown and a holographic note in her hand on the front flyleaf "This narrative is one of John Muir's earliest chiefly written from his diary of the North". Lucretia and her husband American paleontologist Henry Fairfield Osborn 1857-1935 were close friends and benefactors of John Muir. Henry accompanied Muir on his fifth trip to Alaska 1896 and later Muir spent time at the couple's summer house in Garrison New York working on the final proofs of The Yosemite 1912. A fantastic association. In addition to its regular arctic duties as a United States Revenue Service Cutter the Corwin steamed out of San Francisco Bay on May 4 1881 with orders to search for the American polar exploration vessel Jeanette which had not been heard from since 1879. Muir shipped onboard as a naturalist and correspondent for the San Francisco Daily Bulletin and this work consists of the 21 letters that he wrote to the Bulletin during the more than five-month voyage supplemented with notes from his daily diary and the two scientific reports on botany and glaciation that he wrote for the government. Muir was a gifted journalist with a reporter's instinct for the dramatic. Filled with colorful details of the arctic natives and their customs the stark landscape and frequently perilous adventures in an inhospitable and hazardous environment his despatches were eagerly read by a large audience. Edited by William Frederic Bade 1871-1936. Hand-colored photogravure frontispiece with 26 plates consisting of one map eleven halftone reliefs from photographs eight halftone reliefs from sketches by Muir and six line blocks from drawings by Muir. Octavo. Original green laid paper covered boards with a green cloth spine and a brown leather spine label stamped in gold. Partially unopened. An especially crisp and bright example. Later bookplate to a prefatory blank leaf. The spine is lightly faded along the spine with a tiny bit of wear to the spine heel and some very mild rubbing to the rear board. Kimes 347.
