Mit dem Krieg ging eine Welt unter. Ihre letzten Momente, bevor die große Zerstörung begann, sind in diesem Buch festgehalten. Erschütternde Dokumente, die mehr als ein halbes Jahrhundert unter Verschluß waren, berichten von den letzten Tagen und Stunden des Thronfolgerpaares. ... Er war nach einer überstandenen Tuberkulose asthmaanfällig und fürchtete sich vor dem heißen bosnischen Klima. Irgendwelche Todesahnungen hatte er jedoch nicht. Zum ersten Zwischenfall kam es schon auf dem Bahnhof von Chlumetz (Chlum u Trebone), einem in Südböhmen, nahe der jetzigen österreichischen Staatsgrenze liegenden Besitz des Erzherzogs, wo die bosnische Reise begann. Morsey schrieb darüber später in seinen Erinnerungen: "Ich wollte die Kinder auf die Bahn mitnehmen, doch die Herzogin beschloß, sie zu Hause zu lassen. Wir kamen am Bahnhof an. Kaum dort angelangt, erhielt Dr. Horak aus Wesseli die telephonische Nachricht, daß der Salonwagen heiß gelaufen und fahrunfähig geworden war. Dr. Horak meldete es dem Erzherzog. Dieser liebte es öfter, die Herzogin im Scherz mit allerhand Unglücksmäre und Attentatsahnungen zu erschrecken. Ich erinnere mich noch sehr genau, wie solche Gespräche, selbst wenn scherzhaft gemeint, der Herzogin immer sichtlich unangenehm waren. Over 300 engravings of old houses familiar faces and historic places with maps and schedules connected with the local history of York and Toronto John Ross Robertson was a journalist publisher philanthropist historian and sportsman. All his life Robertson was a passionate student of history and collector of historical memorabilia. As a boy of 12 he had started a historical picture collection. He began compiling materials on masonic history as soon as he joined the order and this activity spurred a wider interest in early Canadian history. It would lead Robertson to amass the largest collection of Canadiana in his time. His enthusiasm also manifested itself in the pages of the Telegram where he assigned Thomas Edward Champion and other reporters to write on early Toronto history; the weekly articles were republished at Robertson's expense in a massive six-volume series. Robertson's landmarks of Toronto constitutes a detailed record of Toronto from 1792 to 1914 a "goldmine of information" though the work contains many errors. An autograph manuscript with numerous corrections and amendments of a lecture by Hugh Trevor-Roper on the subject of the Earl of Strafford and Archbishop William Laud 'the two great ministers whose rule in England in the 1630s brought England to the edge of civil war'. It is accompanied by three typed letters signed by Trevor-Roper to Peter Hunt at Rediffusion Television Limited London to whom this manuscript was also presumably sent
Foolscap folio the manuscript 12 leaves of ruled paper the last one being a third of a sheet with text on the rectos only; undated but mid-1960s. Stapled in the top left-hand corner; two ring-binder holes in the margin of each leaf as issued; trifling signs of use and age; in very good condition. The letters each of one page are on Regius Professor of Modern History Oxford letterhead; two are oblong octavo 31 January and 9 December 1966; the third one is quarto 22 November 1966; the latter has numerous annotations presumably in the recipient's hand. The letters are creased where folded for posting; apart from file holes punched in the margin of one of them they are in excellent condition. Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl of Strafford 1593-1641 and William Laud 1573-1645 archbishop of Canterbury 1633-45 were influential counsellors to Charles I during his period of personal rule. The letters deal primarily with proposed television documentaries; one is signed 'yours sincerely Hugh Trevor-Roper' while the two others are signed simply 'Hugh'. One letter replies in detail to two matters arising one being 'My proposal about my Ardilaun lectures'. Trevor-Roper bridles at an apparent suggestion of Hunt's that the 'lectures were on the bogs on Ireland but all I said was that I was unwilling to waste them on those unrewarding bogs. I mean they were lectures on a large European subject the Revolt of the Netherlands in the 16th century which will give you some idea of the scope. I cannot leave you under the misapprehension that I delivered four lectures on the Bogs of Ireland!'. Another letter touches on Trever-Roper's anti-Stratfordian leanings: 'Although you do not ask for my opinion I will nevertheless volunteer it on another matter too. Shakespeare and his circle is quite impossible until there is some agreement who Shakespeare was!'. The third refers to the delivery of 'the proposed full text of Clarendon' apparently another lecture or essay. 'Trevor-Roper was best known as a critic and a devastating analyst of other historians' deficiencies. He became Regius professor of modern history at Oxford 1957-80 and Master of Peterhouse Cambridge 1980-87' 'Dictionary of World Biography' but in 1983 he suffered significant damage to his reputation when he authenticated diaries purportedly by Hitler shortly before they were proven to be forgeries. A vintage gelatin silver photograph flush-cut on the original card mount recently hinge-mounted and matted using archival materials ready for framing visible image size 225 � 295 mm; a few light surface marks and scratches with some minor edge and corner blemishes matted out; overall in very good condition. This photograph was taken at Cape Hunter 'a rocky promontory on the west shore of Commonwealth Bay Antarctica . 15 km west of Cape Denison. It was discovered in 1912 and explored the following year by the Australasian Antarctic Expedition under Douglas Mawson who named it for John G. Hunter chief biologist of the expedition' Geographic Names Information System United States Geological Survey retrieved online. The title come from the catalogue entry for the original 1915 Australian exhibition of Hurley photographs which offers further information about this image: 'At the Cape Hunter Rookery. After several attempts between 1861 and 1866 to enter parliament as a Gladstonian Liberal he won Hastings in 1868 holding the seat until 1886. Whitney Toronto Feb. 21 1911. 5 x 8 inches folded 2 pp. signed red seal of University of Toronto. Falconer invitation to Sir James P. Whitney for a luncheon with Count Apponyi the Hungarian Minister of Religion and Education and noted education reformer. Sir Robert Falconer is most recognized for his 25-year tenure as president of University of Toronto 1907-32. A royal commission appointed to investigate all aspects of the university had found administrative chaos and low morale. It recommended a complete constitutional reorganization and implicitly a new president in 1906. To the surprise of many the 40-year-old Falconer was asked to replace James Loudon. Much of Falconer's time and energy for the next 2 decades was given to executing the recommendations of the 1906 commission. He inherited a collection of colleges; he left behind him an integrated university that led the country in industrial and scientific as well as humanistic research. Count Apponyi 1846-1933 was a Hungarian statesman whose political philosophy blended the conservative traditions of his background with Hungarian nationalism. Entering the Hungarian Parliament in 1872 Apponyi remained a member of it with one short exception until 1918. As Minister Minister of Religion and Education of Hungary Apponyi introduced changes in the school curricula that were greatly resented by the non-Magyars for their Magyarizing tendencies. John George Edward Henry Douglas Sutherland Campbell Marquess of Lorne and later 9th Duke of Argyll married Queen Victoria's fourth daughter Louise at Windsor in 1871. The marriage was not a success partly due to the fact that the groom was homosexual. After the turbulent early years of their marriage the couple eventually reached a modus vivendi. While maintaining a façade of bourgeois respectability Louise found fulfilment as a painter and sculptor Lorne as a writer of books on travel. From 1878 to 1883 he was Governor-General of Canada an appointment that was one of Disraeli's early experiments in imperial statecraft. Disraeli believed a royal princess resident in Canada would strengthen the links between crown and dominion. At age 33 the Lord Lorne was Canada's youngest Governor General but he was not too young to handle the many demands of his post. He and Princess Louise made many lasting contributions to Canadian society especially in the arts and sciences. They encouraged the establishment of the Royal Society of Canada the Royal Canadian Academy of Arts and the National Gallery of Canada even selecting some of its first paintings. In addition to acting as a patron of arts and letters in Canada Lord Lorne was the author of many books of prose and poetry. His writings show a deep appreciation of Canada's physical beauty. Ironically Louise was a disaster - she hated colonial society and constantly invented excuses to absent herself. Lorne however performed creditably. He died at Kent House on the Isle of Wight in 1914.
