For many years she devoted her time to teaching but even though she was not a political radical after the massacre of the students in Soweto she became actively involved in the demonstrations and at age 63 was detained for 5 months in 1977 under the so-called 'terrorism act' for offences which were never specified. In addition to her fight against apartheid Kuzwayo also fought for equal rights for both men and women. In 1979 she was chosen Woman of the Year by the Johannesburg newspaper The Star. This book is more than just her own story: it is also the larger story of the other women among her people who have to struggle to survive to break free of traditional and restrictive roles and to pursue their own choices. Set in Asia during the 1930s Samarcand precedes by 15 years the first installment of O'Brian's masterpiece the Aubrey-Maturin series but bears an important relationship to its development. Although the story takes place largely on land as do the Aubrey-Maturin novels Samarcand begins with an adventure at sea with a ship caught in a typhoon. As with the many storms at sea in the Aubrey-Maturin series O'Brian's creation of this storm sequence "displays a mastery comparable with that of Joseph Conrad." Writing under his birth name P. R. Russ O'Brian had early published three stories in the Oxford Annual for Boys involving Samarcand's Captain Sullivan and his companion Ross. The last of these "No Pirates Nowadays" appearing in 1940 is a prequel to Samarcand according to King which opens with the same characters aboard the same ship in the same general locale in place at the close of the short story. A better than Near Fine copy binding sound pages fresh and bright plates clean and free of foxing. ¶Cyrano de Bergerac was first published in France by Charpentier et Fasquelle in 1898 following its stage production at the Porte Saint-Martin Theater in Paris on December 28 1897 and then in this edition in New York. The play is based loosely on the life of Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac 1619-1655 known for his swashbuckling adventures and large nose and was meticulously researched down to the names of the members of the Académie française and the dames précieuses glimpsed before the performance in the first scene. Written in verse in rhyming couplets of 12 syllables per line very close to the Alexandrine format. Cyrano introduced the word "panache" into the English language. Mansfield was the first actor to play Cyrano in the United States in an English translation. The play is based loosely on the life of Savien de Cyrano de Bergerac 1619-1655 Rostand's favorite writer.
