‎BOITO Arrigo 1842 1918‎

‎Nerone Libretto‎

‎Milano: G. Ricordi & C. 1924. Large octavo. Original publisher's dark ivory illustrated wrappers with titling in red. 1f. recto half-title verso copyright 1f. recto title verso blank 1f. recto cast list verso blank 9-88 pp. On laid paper with text within thin light green rule. With decorative headpieces by Cesari printed in light green.

Publisher's blindstamp to inner lower corner of first few leaves dated 4 April 1924.

Wrappers slightly worn; spine slightly split. Some light foxing. First Edition.

Nerone was first performed in Milan at La Scala on 1 May 1924.

"Nerone which had engaged Boito's attention irregularly for nearly 60 years was finally performed six years after his death on 1 May 1924 at La Scala in a version extensively revised by a committee consisting of Toscanini Antonio Smareglia and Vincenzo Tommasini . Nerone exists in two versions: in five acts as in the printed libretto of 1901 and in four acts as in the printed score. The excised fifth act for which Boito sketched music presents Nero playing Aeschylus's Orestes while Rome burns. The four-act version ends with the death of the Christian convert Rubria. All in all Nerone possesses great originality vividly contrasting pagan magic imperial corruption and Christian caritas. It is arguably Boito's finest achievement." ‎New Light on Dark Africa: Being the Narrative of the German Emin Pasha Expedition‎

‎London: Ward Lock and Co 1891. 1st Edition in English. Hardcover. Fair. frontis portrait illustrations index xviii 1 597p. Original reddish pictorial cloth. Rebacked with most of original worn backstrip mounted. 22cm. Covers faded worn and scuffed. Contents sound although lacking the folding map. Translated from the original German by H. W. Dulcken. A worn and mapless copy of a scarce work. Peters was a bit of an adventurer. It seems unclear whether his actions during this expedition were sanctioned by Germany. At any rate Germany and Great Britain concluded the second Anglo-German Agreement on July 1 1890 under which any claims to East African territory secured by Peters for Germany were casually abandoned by the Germans. Peters was later sent to Africa as a German colonial official but highhanded mistreatment of Africans led to his dismissal and forfeiture of his pension rights. Undaunted Peters moved to England and continued as an adventurer and promoter.

Ward, Lock, and Co hardcover books‎

‎Butler Guy 1918 2001 and Jeffrey Butler 1922 2008‎

‎Archive of Letters and Other Materials‎

‎1975. Very Good. A five inch stack of files containing about 110 letters from Guy to Jeffrey dated between 1965 and 1989 as well as photocopies of many of Jeffrey's letters to Guy over the same period. Also in the files are a few drafts of articles and other items. Condition of the letters and other material varies - some have a bit of staining or other wear. Some run on to several pages; a few are brief; several are cramped onto the space provided by the old single sheet folded aerogrammes. The archive also includes a file containing 55 WWII letters from Jeffrey Butler to his family back in South Africa. Almost all of the WWII letters are on aerogrammes stamped "Passed by Censor." The file also includes a typed transcription of Jeffrey's WWII letters. Guy Butler was an important English-speaking South African poet and writer as well as a professor at Rhodes University in Grahamstown South Africa. His brother Jeffrey eventually emigrated to the United States and spent the majority of his working life as a professor at Wesleyan University in Middletown Connecticut but remained very much interested in South Africa and the town Cradock in which he grew up. Despite their Quaker background both served with South African forces in World War II during which Jeffrey was severely wounded in Italy in 1944 and lost an arm. We don't think Jeffrey ever published an account of his WWII service. Guy described his service and his reaction to Jeff's injury in "Bursting World" the second of his three autobiographical works. Quite a bit of the correspondence collected here is dated in the mid-1970's when the brothers contemplated writing a joint memoir tentatively titled "Two Brothers." After sputtering along for some time the project is rather firmly put to rest by Guy in a 1978 letter. An earlier cluster occurs in 1965 when their father dies and the estate has to be dealt with by Guy. The letters are generally chatty quite friendly and sometimes lengthy. Guy shares news of his various writings and honors and often seeks his brother's opinion and suggestions on various matters.

unknown books‎

‎Kent Corita or Sister Mary Corita born Frances Elizabeth Kent 1918 86‎

‎AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED BY THE POP ART PIONEER‎

‎A holographic letter on Immaculate Heart College letterhead from the American Roman Catholic religious sister and Pop Art pioneer. Undated it was likely written in the mid-1960s prior to her return to secular life in 1968 as Corita Kent.

The letter was written in reply to Eugene Anthony "Gene" McNerney Jr. 1899-80 a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia who worked as newspaper artist and magazine illustrator before embarking on a distinguished career in the Marine Corps. Attributing the delay in responding to her hectic schedule she writes "We're not really ungrateful - just inefficient . after teaching three successive summer sessions it almost seems tame to be back in regular session." Kent also makes reference to an ad she placed in Graphis Annual and two individuals associated with her work with the Department of Fine Arts concluding with an invitation to an open house and sale.

Kent served as the chair of the Department of Fine Arts at Immaculate Heart College in Los Angeles. After the Second Vatican Council she transformed the college's annual Mary's Day procession into a community celebration which was part of the sister's campaign to bring secular people together. During this time Kent's work became increasingly political addressing events such as the Vietnam War and humanitarian crises. Incorporating brilliant colors and bold shapes her art was her activism. Tensions between the order and church leadership were mounting with the Los Angeles Archdiocese criticizing the college as "liberal" and Cardinal James McIntyre labeling Kent's work as "blasphemous" which hastened her departure from the order. Most sisters followed suit and the Immaculate Heart College closed in 1980. Kent continued to create spiritually-informed artwork primarily silkscreen or serigraphy which played an important role in the renaissance of the poster as a medium of communication and continues to influence graphic design well into the 20th century.

One page 8 ½" x 11" folded into thirds for mailing. Some uneven toning; otherwise very good. unknown books‎

‎Feynman Richard 1918 88‎

‎RICHARD FEYNMAN THEATRICAL COLLECTION: The Theoretical Physicist as Thespian‎

‎A small collection associated with Richard Feynman's involvement with Theatre Arts at the California Institute of Technology TACIT. All the materials are from the estate of Shirley Marneus who founded TACIT and directed stage productions at Caltech for more than 20 years.

Feynman was already regarded as the most brilliant influential and iconoclastic figure in his field when Marneus approached the theoretical physicist who had been a member of the Caltech staff since 1949 about performing in a 1977 production of Guys and Dolls. Feynman recalled this moment in his irreverent memoir Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman 1985 ".at Caltech there's a group that puts on plays. Some of the actors are Caltech students; others are from outside. When there's a small part such as a policeman who's supposed to arrest somebody they get one of the professors to do it. It's always a big joke - the professor comes on and arrests somebody and goes off again. A few years ago the group was doing Guys and Dolls and there was a scene where the main guy takes the girl to Havana and they're in a nightclub. The director thought it would be a good idea to have the bongo player on the stage in the nightclub be me." Feynman was an enthusiastic amateur player of bongo and conga drums having developed a passion for samba music during his 1951-52 sabbatical in Brazil.

In her remembrance of Feynman for The California Tech a campus weekly Marneus recalled ".immediately he wanted to find out more about the stage about acting how to do it well to really go for the principles of the form. And though his research classes conferences kept him on a rigorous schedule he always made time to come back to TACIT each time fresh yet more skilled each time challenging himself. Finally as the Sewer King in The Madwoman of Chaillot he pulled off a little jewel of characterization - a mix of wry humour weary insight delicious dubiety determined that the 'good guys' in the play should at least have a chance to win. The subtleties and loving details of his performance how he 'saucered 'n blowed' his tea with an elegant lift to his pinkie finger were noticed by a reviewer who praised his work. This worried him: 'Now I gotta be good!' He was. He was just the best. While he suffered no flatterers and few fools his in-home courtesy was incredible. For instance while he was rehearsing for Kismet he was appointed to the President's Commission on the Challenger explosion. He called me the same night to explain and to ask if I'd understand if he quit the show."

Included in this collection is a first edition of the posthumously published Perfectly Reasonable Deviations from the Beaten Track: The Letters of Richard P. Feynman which is inscribed by Feynman's daughter editor Michelle Feynman to Shirley Marneus: "For Shirley I know my father thought the world of you - as do I. All the best Michelle Feynman". ‎Crockett Samuel Rutherford 1859 1914‎

‎AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED TO A YOUNG AUTOGRAPH COLLECTOR‎

‎A holographic letter on the Scottish novelist's Penicuik letterhead dated September 18 1901. Crockett writes "You seem a nice girl and live in a respectable neighbourhood. Ah if only you did not collect autographs how useful and happy your young life might be! Repent while yet there is time. Give all you have to the next bazaar. Then undermine the building after the manner of the late Mr. Faux Guy of that name - and - you will have done some good to the world."

After graduating Edinburgh University in 1879 and studying for the ministry at New Colly in 1886 he became minister of Penicuik Midlothian. With the success of the novels The Stickit Minister 1893 and The Lilac Sunbonnet 1894 he abandoned the ministry for writing following the vogue for novels in Scots dialect set by James M. Barrie. Crockett published more than 40 books mainly novels and was a leader of the Kailyard kitchen garden school of writers who depicted Scottish rural life in a sentimental fashion.

Single sheet 4" x 6 ¼" with previous folds for mailing. ‎ARIES Philippe 1914 1984.‎

‎Western Attitudes Toward Death: From the Middle Ages to the Present.‎

‎Baltimore:: Johns Hopkins University Press 1974. 1974. 8vo. xi 3 111 1 pp. Figs. index. Beige gilt-stamped cloth dust jacket; jacket chipped. Very good. ISBN: 0801815665 First American edition. Aries was a French medieval historian and friend of Michel Foucault. He is best known for his book Centuries of Childhood 1962 which presents childhood as a social construction rather than an actual physiological state. The other focus of his academic career somewhat paradoxically was the evolution of western societies' concept of death. In Western Attitudes Towards Death he argues that as religiosity has waned societies have become increasingly reluctant to confront death directly. / "Proposing that there is a permanent relationship between one's idea of death and one's self Aries explains how and why death ceased being a familiar routine forgetting of a self and has become a wild feeling of personal failure." –jacket.
