Hampshire Stuart 1914 2004. Spinoza Benedictus de 1632 1677
Spinoza and Spinozism. By Stuart Hampshire. OXFORD : 2005
Oxford: Oxford University Clarendon Press 2005. FIRST EDITION THUS : 2005. Contents Spinoza : an introduction to his philosophical thought. Originally published: Harmondsworth : Penguin 1951 reprinted with a new introduction and revisions 1988 -- Spinoza and the idea of freedom. Rev. ed. Originally published: New York : Penguin 1987. . Black and white pictorial covers. No owner name or internal markings. NEAR FINE. lviii 206 pages. Includes bibliographical references and index. SUMMARY FROM BACK COVER : 'Stuart Hampshire one of the most eminent British philosophers of the twentieth century will perhaps be best remembered for his work on the seventeenth-century philosopher Spinoza nearly all of which is gathered now in this volume. Among the great thinkers of modern times only Spinoza created a complete system of philosophy that rivals Plato's. Few other thinkers have felt so strongly 'the desire to have a unitary view of the world and of man's place within it' - a desire that led Spinoza to make crucial contributions to every major philosophical topic: the nature of knowledge and freedom the existence of God ethics and politics mind and matter pleasure and perception." "Hampshire's classic 1951 introductory book Spinoza pioneered the revival of interest in him in the English-speaking world. It remains the best introduction and it is reprinted here in its revised edition. But what gives particular interest to this new volume is the first publication of Hampshire's last work 'Spinoza and Spinozism' an extended presentation of a Spinozist philosophical worldview. To complete the picture Hampshire's influential 1962 essay 'Spinoza and the Idea of Freedom' is also included.' 8vo. Will be well-packed for posting/shipping. Blue publisher's cloth gilt lettered spine with Oxford motif to spine foot. Minor wear only. Bright tight and clean. No owner name or internal markings. A nice copy. VERY GOOD INDEED. xlviii 336 pages. Index. GEORGE BERKELEY: 1685-1753 Irish Philosopher. He entered Trinity College Dublin in 1700 and became a fellow in 1707. In 1724 he resigned his Fellowship to become Dean of Derry and in 1734 he was made Bishop of Cloyne. He settled in Oxford in 1752 and died the following year. The work of George Berkeley is marked by its diversity and range. His writings take in such topics as mathematics psychology politics health economics deism and education as well as that with which he is most associated - philosophy. Whatever topic he dealt with his grasp of the subject matter was always impressive and his criticisms of his contemporaries often acute. Among the most noteable of the British Empiricists he took his starting point from Locke's new 'way of ideas' but he rejected abstract ideas and the possibility of real existence outside perception. It is for this doctrine that he is most known - that there is no such thing as matter and that things are collections of ideas which can exist only in our minds and only for so long as they are perceived. This philosophy summed up in his phrase 'to be is to be perceived' he termed 'immaterialism'. Sm.8vo. Will be well-packed for posting/shipping. SUMMARY: Thomas Cranmer lived at a time of profound ideological and ecclesiastical change and his continuing legacy as England's first Protestant Archbishop and liturgical reformer has placed his reputation at the mercy of partisan positions on both sides of the Reformation divide. This volume enlarged and expanded from papers presented at a conference marking the 500th anniversary of Cranmer's birth aims to shed new light on its subject placing him firmly in his 16th-century context. The ideological background to his work is addressed by papers examining his theological writings from his early years in the European movement of religious change and by a consideration of Cranmer's library as it survives today as a potential resource for the study of his intellectual background and development and of writers that may have influenced him. Cranmer's career is followed through a study of the preachers he patronized and their role in encouraging reform; by studies of Cranmer's own work as a reformer in schools and universities; and through an exploration of relations between Crown and See during his Archbishopric. A third theme Cranmer and the reform of worship and spirituality emerges from study of his liturgical composition and its European intellectual context and his campaign in the Canterbury diocese against popular religion. An appendix includes source material relating to Cranmer and his career. Heavy; over 1 kilo; extra postage needed overseas. Will be well-packed for posting/shipping. 8vo.
