MITCHEL John Purroy 1879 1918
Typed Note Signed
"The Boy Mayor of New York" a rough-and-tumble reformer who was elected in 1914 at the astonishing age of 34 making him New York City's youngest ever mayor; he lost his bid for reelection though and joining the Air Service in 1918 he died just shy of his 39th birthday in a training accident over Louisiana -- apparently he forgot to fasten his seat belt and fell from his aircraft plummeting 500 feet to his death. TNS 1p 5" X 8" New York NY 1914 June 16. Addressed to Charles T. White New York City's tax commissioner better known as a noted Abraham Lincoln scholar. Near fine. On City of New York / Office of the Mayor" letterhead Mitchel simply notes "Permit me to thank you for your kind note of congratulation." Cryptic but intriguing and worth further research. Huge bold full signature. A rather uncommon signature given his early demise. unknown

SCALI John 1918 95
Signed Printed Document
This ABC news reporter entered diplomacy when he acted as an intermediary during the Cuban Missile Crisis helping divert a disaster; in 1971 President Nixon named him his foreign affairs advisor; from 1973 to 1975 he served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations. Signed Printed Document 8" X 10" 7pp recto and verso; 4 leaves New York NY 1974 December 6. Near fine. Stapled at upper left as issued; two faint horizontal original folds. Standard mimeographed press release issued by the "United States Delegation to the General Assembly" titled "Statement by Ambassador John Scali. on Strengthening the Role of the United Nations." In a blank area at top center of the first page the ambassador boldly pens "with best wishes / from / John Scali" in black fineline. In this speech Scali deplores "the growing tendency of this Organization to adopt one-sided unrealistic resolutions that cannot be implemented" as well as "a new threat -- an arbitrary disregard of United Nations Rules even of its Charter." He goes on to cite numerous instances of both closing with: ".we must now renew our commitment to the central principles of tolerance and harmony upon which the United Nations charter was built. We must redouble our efforts to use this Organization as the world's ultimate instrument for compromise and negotiation. I pledge my nation to these efforts." Most unusual in this form. unknown

Giorgio Sommer 1834 1914
"N. 6068 LE TRE GRAZIE G. SOMMER NAPOLI Largo Vittoria Palazzo Sommer"
G. Sommer Napoli 1880. Fotografia all'Albumina montata su cartone. Dimensioni complessive: 17 x 11 cm. Operando dai rispettivi studi a Napoli e a Roma Sommer e Behles divennero i pi prolifici produttori di fotografie in Italia. G. Sommer Napoli unknown

Richard David Ellmann 1918 1987
Four Dubliners: Wilde Yeats Joyce and Beckett
122 pages with photographs facsimiles and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6" bound in original publisher's half beige cloth with gilt lettering to spine over green cloth in gilt lettering in original jacket. First edition. In four Library of Congress lectures also published as articles in New York Review of Books the eminent literary biographer who died in May finds interesting if not new things to say about four great Irish-born writers: Oscar Wilde influenced by Ruskin and Pater at Oxford wavering between Roman Catholicism and atheism between homo- and heterosexuality; W .B. Yeats after a "monkey-gland" operation writing several great poems toward the end of his life; James Joyce trying to start love affairs to provide background for the Nausicaa chapter in Ulysses; Samuel Beckett sumptuous in his use of language isolating nearly renouncing particulars and depriving his characters of money youth health and fortitude. Ellmann finds connections as well as differences among these writers. Because of what Beckett has written his Irish predecessors "take on a different look. Because of their work he may not seem quite so rootless as he first appears." Condition: Near fine in like jacket. George Braziller hardcover
