In conjunction with his two studies of The Tarahumar of Mexico and The Tepehuan of Chihuahua this volume adds to the record from northern Mexico aboriginal and contemporary Indian groups. Archival materials indicate that at Contact of Pima Bajo extended in a continuous band from the middle portion of the Rio Sonora to the middle reaches of the Rio Yaqui and eastward into the Sierra Madre Occidental. The present-day Pima Bajo are geographically divided into two groups and in this work Pennington focuses on the culturally more advanced western Pima since few studies have been done on this segment of the Pima population. He extensively analyzes archival materials pertaining to the Pima Bajo of the historical period and discusses the contact between Spaniard Indian and Mestizo. Military and ecclesiastical records document this contact over the last 300 years. Pennington also makes reference to materials found in a previously unpublished Pima Bajo vocabulary that was probably composed during the seventeenth century.

Condition:

Page ends soiled previous owner's name on front end paper of volume one. x 451 pages with photographs tables appendices and index. Royal octavo 9 1/4" x 6 1/4" bound in original publisher's blue-green cloth with silver lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition. Fieldwork Among the Maya is a personal chronicle of the Harvard Chiapas Project written by the man who initiated it in 197 and guided it through thirty-five years of intensive ongoing research. Beginning with his childhood in New Mexico and insights into how and why he became an anthropologist Vogt moves on to describe the major features of the Chiapas Project which was a long-range ethnographic program to describe systematically for the first time and to analyze the Tzotzil-Maya cultures of the remote highlands of Chiapas. The goal was to understand how these contemporary Mayas are related to the prehistoric Classic Maya and how their cultures are changing as they confront the modern world. Maintaining a delicate balance between the technical and the personal Vogt comments on changes in anthropological styles and methods describes in vivid terms often humorous sometimes poignant the day-to-day lives of the researchers and their informants and depicts clearly the joys the rewards and the hazards encountered in the field by social anthropologists. Condition: A fine copy in like jacket. University of New Mexico Press hardcover

11 Royal Arcade Melbourne.: Caire. No date. circa1875. Albumen print laid down onto card with gold lined borders. Captioned in gold ink: Fine Art Photograph. N.J. Caire/11 Royal Arcade/Melbourne/Instantaneous Views of Melbourne. Three very tiny chips at edges lightly creased in a few places. These creases are more apparent in the image of the photograph than to the naked eye. Photograph measures 15 x 20cm. A very interesting view of Swanston Street. The Princes Bridge Hotel which soon after this photo was taken changed its name to Young & Jackson after Henry Young and Thomas Jackson took over the licence in 1875 can be seen in far left of the image Melbourne Town Hall is to the right while the eye is drawn down Swanston Street by the horses carts and a few pedestrians that take up the central section of the photograph.

N.J. Caire described by Jack Cato in "The Story of the Camera in Australia" as "an aristocrat of the camera" was from his youth affected with "the madness of photography". His established his first studio in Adelaide in 1860 moving to the then gold field town of Clunes in 1870 before opening a studio in Melbourne in 1876. Given that this photograph still shows the sign of the Princes Bridge Hotel on what became Young & Jackson it seems likely this photograph predates the opening of his studio in Melbourne. .
