1945. 1945. Very good. - A 10-3/4 inch by 6-1/2 inch wide print in black on cream-colored paper depicting the Madonna standing in the bombed-out ruins of a church holding the baby Jesus in the folds of her robe. "Peace on Earth is printed above the image and "Christmas Greetings from Paul Rabut" below it. At the foot of the sheet the artist has added in ink: "And May 1946 Be a Truly Happy New Year for All! Paul Rabut". The top edge of the print is slightly darkened from offsetting & soiled and there are tiny remnants of paper & 2 glue stains to the verso where the drawing was apparently once mounted to a card. Very good.
American artist and illustrator Paul Rabut studied at the College of the City of New York the Art School of the National Academy of Design the Grand Central Art School and the Art Students League. He was widely exhibited and won awards for both editorial and advertising illustrations. Characteristically he researched the subject matter of his assignments so thoroughly that he became an authority on United States history logging Northwest Indian culture and artifacts and other primitive art--Oceanic pre-Colombian and especially African wood carvings and masks. He was a consultant for collectors and galleries on the subject of primitive art and had one of the finest private collections in the country.
(1945).
London: 5 October 1904. 1904. Very good. - Letter penned in black ink and filling one and a half sides of a cream-colored approximately 8 inch high by 5 inch wide sheet of College of Arms letterhead with the address printed in raised lettering in black at the top. Signed "A. S. Scott-Gatty / Garter". There are remnants of paper & light glue staining to the top edge of the verso where the letter was once tipped onto an album page. Very good.
Scott-Gatty writes thanking his correspondent for an invitation and apologizing for being unable to accompany his wife owing to the pressure of work in his new office. "Alas! in my newly acquired elevation I find myself more tied by the leg to my work than I was formerly and having only just returned from my holiday I find a ----- of work to be got through."

Sir Alfred Scott Scott-Gatty 1847-1918 began his heraldic career with his appointment to the office of York Herald of Arms in Ordinary. He held two other posts in the early 1900s and in 1904 he was appointed Garter Principal King of Arms holding that office until his death in 1918. In 1911 he was knighted for his services when he was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order KCVO an honor personally bestowed by the King. Scott-Gatty was also a composer. Although an amateur his work was popular and highly regarded in his time. Among his compositions were hundreds of songs two operettas and three musical plays for children with words written by his sister the noted children's author Mrs. Ewing.
London: 5 October, 1904.
