The names alone in this novel give some idea of its prissy eccentric character: Duane Bledsoe Dr. Cressy Duke La Roche Estelle Dumont. Duane is a teenager whose two older brothers Justin and Douglas are killed in battle during World War II. An ice-skater but very short for his age Duane has had his Olympic hopes dashed by his starchy uptight lawyer father Eugene with whom he unhappily lives mother Aileen having been denied custody at divorce. And Duane is tutored privately at home by Duke La Roche a local college teacher. But worst of all Duane is regularly paid ghostly visits by dead brother Justin. Dead Justin in fact seems to be pulling all the strings from above ultimately enmeshing Duane in the spider-lady clutches of the aforementioned Estelle Dumont a rich widow who was once in love with Justin. And when Duane now gets her pregnant she marries Duke. . . but relinquishes the child to Duane and his father. True this plot is the stuff of afternoon TV. Likewise the dialogue: ""Duke turned back. His anger gave way now to his need and he implored 'Since you don't want her as badly as I or perhaps as Justin can't you go to her and tell her of my desperation'"" But Purdy's faithful return to the thematic touchstone-figures of his fiction--the female ""collector"" of men; a lost brother; physical shortness--adds serious weight; and until about halfway through it's even possible to take enjoyment from the wheezy oddness of it all. Half divertissement haft balderdash then--another curious book by an always-curious writer. A union co-worker suggested that he take up painting as a way to exercise his fingers and ease the pain. In 1945 Fasanella persuaded the UE to organize painting classes for its members at a local college. He was one of the first members to sign up for classes. Fasanella became consumed by art and left labor union organizing to paint full-time. To pay the bills he bought a service station and worked there. Fasanella's painting focused on city life men and women at work union meetings strikes sit-ins and baseball games. He quickly developed a style which spoke to workers and the poor through the use of familiar details. Fasanella improvised a quasi-surrealist style depicting interiors and exteriors or past and future simultaneously. He painted canvases as big as 10 feet across because he envisioned his paintings hanging in large union meeting halls. 'I always felt embarrassed by the whole thing' he said 'but I had to do it.' Fasanella's art was highly improvisational. He never planned out works and rarely revised them. He said of his 1948 painting May Day it 'just came out of my belly. I never planned it. " On the facing page Boito has dedicated the aria to "la gentile Signorina Elena Barbaroux" and has initialled and dated "Milano 31. Marzo. 87." Usual folds mounting traces to verso else fine. <br><br><br />Autograph manuscript of the aria text "Conchiglia rosea del patrio lido" from the celebrated librettist's "Ero e Leandro." Boito who composed only one finished opera Mefistofele himself completed but later destroyed his "Ero e Leandro." The work was instead set to music by Giovanni Bottesini Turin 1880 and later by Luigi Mancinelli Madrid 1897. Boito is remembered chiefly for his libretti for Ponchielli La Gioconda and Verdi Otello and Falstaff and for his own Mefistofele. unknown

Inscribed across the lower half of the photograph and signed "to Edward ------ / Sincerely / Sagi-Vela / 1939". The signature is in a dark area of the photo but is still quite legible. There is creasing to the top right corner of the photo with a very light crease to its bottom edge. Very good. <p>Sagi-Vela is photographed at half length in a jaunty pose wearing white tie with a white flower in his buttonhole. 1939. unknown
