Good. - sc - A 5-1/2 inch high by 3-7/8 inch wide sienna toned photograph by Sarony mounted on 6-1/2 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide brick red board with the photographer's name and address printed at the bottom of the mount. The image portrays Robert Drouet seated attired in a three-piece suit with necktie over the stiff upright collar of a white shirt. The actor holds a cane and gloves in one hand a hat in the other. Signed and dated "Robert Drouet / 1900" in black ink at top right of the photograph. There is some rubbing affecting the edge of the actor's head and shoulder and a few scratches to the edges of the photograph. Good. <p>Born in Clinton Iowa the American actor and playwright Robert Drouet 1870-1914 first joined a theatrical company at 16 and later managed his own Shakespearean repertoire company. He played leading parts with Robert Downing and went on the play the part of General Delarouche in "Paul Kaubar" Citizen Pierre in the play of that name Colonel Jack Brereton in "Janice Meredith" based on Paul Leicester Ford's novel and John Austin in "The Girl With the Green Eyes" among other roles. One of the most celebrated playwrights of his day he authored "Doris" "The White Czar" "Montana" "Tomorrow" "An Idyll of Virginia" "Fra Diano" and "Captain Bob". New York: Sarony, 1900. unknown

Description:<br />Three of the thirteen original hand written score sheets in Aleksandrov's hand in Russian chess-notation. Octavo 8 1/4" x 6" Signed by him and his three opponents Tenis Melngailis Reinholds Balinsh and Igor Zhadanov.Fricis Aspenieks 1894-1941 was Latvia's chess champion in 1926 and 1934 and one of the strongest players in Latvia before WWII. He died from tuberculosis in 1941.>br><br />The Memorial Tournament was held in Riga from December 10 through the 26th. Aleksandrov won with a score of 11 of 13 distantly followed by V Mezhgailis with 8 1/2; Tied for third through fifth was M Beilin G Bezruchko and T Melngailis with a score of 7 points. J Kruzkop was clear sixth with 6 1/2. R Balinish was a half point behind and took seventh. Tied for eighth and ninth were M Zvirbulis and I Zhdanov with 5 each. Z Solmainis took tenth with 4 1/2. Eleventh and twelfth were I Blek and M Robs with 4. A Paklas with a score of 2 1/2 was last. A Bushkov withdrew and his score was not counted even though he and lost one won one and equal two before withdrawing. Aleksandrov won both of these games with Melngails a French Defense playing white; and with Zhdanov the Spanish playing black. Founded in 1846 by Ludwig Bledow under the title Schachzeitung der Berliner Schachgesellschaft it took the name Deutsche Schachzeitung in 1872. Another magazine used the title Deutsche Schachzeitung from 1846 to 1848. When it ceased publication in December 1988 it was the oldest existing magazine in the world having been published regularly since its founding in 1846 except for a five-year break 1945–1949 during World War II. Since January 1989 the Deutsche Schachzeitung was merged in the Deutsche-Schachblätter - Schach-Report which was edited in Hollfeld. The resulting magazine appeared with the names of both former magazines on its cover till December 1996. Since January 1997 this magazine again was merged in the Berlin magazine Schach. The resulting magazine kept the names Schach and Schach-Report on its cover for one year but the name Deutsche Schachzeitung had disappeared from the cover. Since 1998 the magazine appears under the simple Schach. However the table of contents is still headed by the names Deutsche Schachzeitung Deutsche Schachblätter and Schach-Report. Inscribed by the author to George M Foster. First edition.<br /><br />This work is the first comprehensive investigation of Philippine ritual kinship. It is based on extensive field research in the central Philippines Bisayas as utilizes al available published and manuscript sources. Hart begins with a brief history of the develompment of compadrinazgo and its rapid diffusion throughout Latin America and the Philippines. In describing the nature and scope of ritual kinship relationships he organizes a vast body of material on the rites of compadrinazgo the qualifications that must be met by ritual kinsmen and the concomitant responsibilities and privileges. Giving full play to the broad social dimensions of compadrinazgo Hart relates biological kinship class structure and social control. The author utilizes a comparative approach throughout his work but the last two chapters are especially rich in comparative material. The Spaniards brought the god parenthood complex to both Latin America and the Philippines whereupon it was modified by the indigenous cultures of Asia and the New World. Numerous differences exist between Latin American and Filipino compadrinazgo although they have more in common with each other than either does with the Spanish system from which they derive. In his presentation of descriptive data from Hispanic America and Europe Hart challenges some of the overly facile generalizations that have characterized the study of compadrinazgo for quite some time.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Inscribed on title light rubbing to extremities. Jacob August Riis was a Danish-American social reformer "muckraking" journalist and social documentary photographer. He is known for using his photographic and journalistic talents to help the impoverished in New York City; those impoverished New Yorkers were the subject of most of his prolific writings and photography. He endorsed the implementation of "model tenements" in New York with the help of humanitarian Lawrence Veiller. Additionally as one of the most famous proponents of the newly practicable casual photography he is considered one of the fathers of photography due to his very early adoption of flash in photography. While living in New York Riis experienced poverty and became a police reporter writing about the quality of life in the slums. He attempted to alleviate the bad living conditions of poor people by exposing their living conditions to the middle and upper classes. Boulez has written out one measure and the title of the movement "'Le vierge le vivace et le bel aujourd'hui' Mallarmé" signed and dated Salzburg August 20 1992. On the verso a further autograph and inscription from the French baritone Gérard Souzay dated Salzburg August 1992.<br style="">"The extent of Boulez's new freedom is perhaps most amply demonstrated in Pli selon pli a work for soprano and large orchestra in five movements sub-titled 'portrait de Mallarmé'. Extended passages in which the registers of notes remain fixed make for a new simplicity of style particularly in the vocal writing of the three Improvisations which form the work's central core. The frequently ornate vocal style of the work does not preclude a somewhat expressionistic treatment of Mallarmé's text but Boulez's real homage to the poet lies deeper in the formal correspondences between his music and Mallarmé's poetic syntax." On a postcard showing a river scene in Argentina Dupont has penned three measures from the prelude to his opera La Cabréra which won him the Sonzogno Prize in Italy in 1905. He has signed boldly across the image and dated Vésinet August 1905. On the verso the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Patricia Otaño with original French stamp and postmark. A fascinating collection of 14 autograph letters and cards and 2 telegrams addressed to the important French composer dated between 1903 and 1917 from musicians and other artistic figures of the era. The letters from correspondents including conductors critics dancers composers and visual artists mention the very positive reception of Debussy's works during the last years of his life including his 1903 nomination as a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur the Chicago premiere of his opera Pelléas et Melisande and Toscanini's 1911 performance of La Mer; other works discussed include his ballet Jeux the cantata L'enfant prodigue and his work for piano L'isle joyeuse. Letters range from 4 x 2.5 inches to 5.25 x 8.25 inches and are overall in very good to fine condition with some light toning and age wear. All letters in French.Contents:Three letters congratulate Debussy on his nomination to the Légion d'honneur in 1903: one autograph note on the visiting card of conductor Edouard Colonne Paris February 1903 1 p.; one ALS from the soprano Lucienne Bréval n.p. February 4 1903 4 pp. which also mentions her desire to sing one of Debussy's mélodies with orchestra; and one ALS from the architect Charles Plumet Paris n.d. 1 p.Two telegrams dated June 11 1910 send congratulations to Debussy on the successful performance of his Pelléas et Mélisande in Chicago from the conductor Cleofonte Campanini and the director general of the Chicago Grand Opera Company Andreas Dippel: "Four thousand people were impressed and touched. Our congratulations."Two letters send congratulations to Debussy on the performance of his La Mer under Toscanini in Turin in 1911. On a photograph postcard Turin September 30 1911 the composer Leone Sinigaglia writes that "It would have been a joy for you a lasting memory. Toscanini put his whole soul into it all his intelligence and all his will. His execution of your admirable masterpiece was prodigious. The public wary at the beginning as you may imagine! you know this well was won over -- at the end it was a great success which was repeated yesterday evening." The critic Giuseppe Depanis Turin October 12 1911 2 pp. writes that "not only was the second presentation Toscanini of La Mer received with the same good favor as the first but Vincent D'Indy also performed Nuages andFêtes in his concert on the 10th of the month with great success."An autograph letter from Nadejda Rimsky-Korsakov St Petersburg August 20 1911 1 p. with envelope thanks Debussy for his telegram and mentions in reference to the Ballets Russes' adaptation of her husband's famous work Scheherazade that "the appearance before the artistic Parisian public of my husband's works changed and transformed into ballet caused me great pain last summer and this time." An autograph letter from the caricaturist Beppe Fabiano Paris May 29 1912 2 pp. confesses to Debussy that "I have just exhibited your portrait at the Salon des Humanistes -- in a series of celebrated composers -- without asking your permission beforehand. Fearing I may have overstepped I would be delighted if you would forgive me."<br style="">A short autograph letter from the sculptor Denys Puech Paris June 4 1912 1 p. mentions L'après-midi d'un faune. A short autograph letter from the sculptor Albert Bartholomé Budapest May 25 1913 1 p. informs Debussy that his cantata L'enfant prodigue "was admirably executed by truly passionate performers. I was able to obtain the poster from the theater and will be pleased to send it to you." The Russian ballerina and soloist with the Ballets Russes Ludmilla Chollar writes to Debussy about her role in Jeux in which she starred with Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina London June 26 1913 2 pp. She thanks the composer for the "the most beautiful memories which I could bring from Paris: the very kind words with which you dedicated Jeux your photography and some measures of my role . If I take from the creation of Jeux one exquisite and ineffable memory it is to you that I owe it to your work and to the happy chance that I met you away from the mirage of celebrities an artist as great as you whose work is dear to me above all others."<br style="">An autograph letter from the composer Ildebrando Pizzetti Florence September 17 1913 1 p. with envelope asks Debussy to comment on his new composition: "You would do me a great honor Maître if you would send me a few words on the subject but of course with no obligation on your part to give me compliments if my musical work does not interest you!"An interesting wartime letter from the Italian conductor Bernardino Molinari Rome September 18 1915 4 pp. calls on Debussy's patriotic feelings to ask him to collaborate with his orchestra: "I still remember what you said to me yourself here in Rome about "L'isle joyeuse" when you gave me hope that you might make a transcription for orchestra. If you have the desire and the time I would be very flattered to have the score to perform it during the next concert season at the Augusteo. You understand that in this season we very much wish to form a program in which our allies in France figure prominently. In a political moment like this one where the souls of all the Allied nations are unified and united into one ideal all of us at the Academie ask you for your valid support in the coming season." He goes on to apologize that because of the war he will be unable to offer the same fee as the previous time and reports that performances of Debussy's works around Italy have been very successful: "This shows with evidence that your musical language speaks to great and small touching the heartstrings of all." An autograph letter from the composer and musicologist Jean D'Udine Paris April 27 1917 3 pp. invites Debussy to one of Udine's salons despite Debussy's known disdain for his school of dance: "I know you have no sympathy for rhythmic gymnastics which seem to you you have written 'a very disagreeable domestication of rhythm.' I believe that you are wrong and that they are rather an emancipation of rhythm when taught well. Without any hostility on your part towards the method which I teach with conviction I would like to ask you to honor with your presence one of the evenings which I am hosting at present. You would there see danced with extreme love and respect by one of my students a remarkable artist your beautiful dances for chromatic harp . I did not want to give these evenings April 28 and May 3 and 5 without informing you pour memoire and without letting you know that it is sometimes where one feels the least loved that one is actually the most seriously and profoundly loved."The violinist and composer Francesco Guarnieri writes N.p. In the late 1860's she began a career as an evangelist and then a missionary outside the US. Blessed with a magical voice Smith ultimately travelled the world preaching for the Presbyterian Church. "Pereira Pimenta de Castro .was a Portuguese army officer and politician. He was a career military officer reaching the position of General also graduated in Mathematics by the University of Coimbra. In 1908 he was nominated commander of the 3rd Military Region in Porto. After the proclamation of the Republic on October 5 1910 he was Minister of War for only two months in 1911. He had to resign due to the monarchist incursion of Henrique de Paiva Couceiro. An independent he was chosen by President Manuel de Arriaga to be the President of the Ministry Prime Minister of a government who would rule without the parliament where the Portuguese Republican Party led by Afonso Costa had the majority. His government with the support of the moderate Evolutionist Republican Party and the Republican Union and also conservative military factions was in office from 28 January to 14 May 1915. It was overthrown by the military movement of 14 May 1915 supported by the Republican Party which also caused the resignation of President Manuel de Arriaga" - wikipedia. Imp. W.G. Humboldt unknown

Full score. Undated. Oblong folio 10 x 14 inches 9pp. A total of 159 bars in length. Notated in black ink on 22 hand-ruled staves per page. Scored for 2 flutes 2 oboes 2 clarinets 2 bassoons 2 horns 2 cornets timbales triangle and string quartet. With fine full signature to first page of music. Minor corrections throughout. Some light wear and soiling. Overall though an attractive closely-written manuscript of a work not included in the New Grove works list. Possibly unpublished. Lecocq was a successful composer of operetta and gained international recognition with works such as La Fille de Madame Angot Girofle-Girofla and La Petite Mariee. La Fille de Madame Angot has remained a classic among operettas and demonstrates Lecocq's abundant flow of pleasing melodies his deft exploitation of rhythm for a lively theatrical effect impressive building up of extended numbers and typically French shaping of phrases. In this friendly letter the British actor mentions the theater and discusses his plans for the new year in full: "Dear Grant How very pleasant to hear from you. Thank you for your letter -- though I was sorry to read that you have not been busy in the theatre. I was thinking of you a week ago when I was browsing in the splendid Robert Frost you gave me. The Cocktail Party seems to be a fair success and I imagine I shall be hard at it until the early spring. After that I don't know what I shall do. Before too long I want to return to the crisp air of New York. All good wishes for Christmas. Yours sincerely Alec G." One horizontal fold but still in near fine condition. Float mounted in gray beside a 5.25 x 4-inch photo of Guinness gazing off to the side. Set in a decorative black frame with burgundy trim measuring 13.25 x 16.25 inches. Accompanied by the original handwritten envelope housed in a plastic sleeve neatly mounted to the back of the frame. unknown
