L'Holbein di Lady Beldonald
br. L'anziana, anonima dama di compagnia di una Lady americana inserita nell'alta società londinese viene improvvisamente "scoperta" dagli artisti dei salotti à la page come incarnazione vivente di un quadro di Holbein. Per una stagione, come un effimero fenomeno di costume, la donna vive un inaspettato "successo di bellezza" proprio al tramonto della propria vita, scatenando peraltro invidie e gelosie, a partire dalla propria protettrice. Il piccolo, bizzarro caso aneddotico si fa dramma e muta infine in tragedia. Ma, come spesso accade in Henry James, la trama è solo un pretesto per una descrizione corrosiva, impietosa dell'ambiente della upper class a cavallo tra Ottocento e Novecento. Alla disgregazione di un ordine sociale e di una visione del mondo, che di lì a poco sfocerà nel primo conflitto mondiale, fa da specchio la scrittura jamesiana, tortuosa nel voler riprodurre la totale soggettività del punto di vista dei personaggi nel loro affrontare la "realtà".

"Ritratto di signora" può essere letto come il romanzo di un'iniziazione americana, o come il romanzo della realtà del denaro e del potere che ne deriva, ma resta soprattutto un paesaggio d'anime, tratteggiato da un maestro del realismo psicologico.

Louisa May Alcott - e anche in questo caso il racconto trae spunto dall'esperienza privata dell'autrice - narra di un'infermiera che, chiamata ad accudire un nemico moribondo, si avvicina al proprio aiutante di colore e alla sua tragica storia. Willa Cather ambienta il proprio scritto nella Parigi di inizio Novecento, nello studio di uno scultore americano che durante un soggiorno a casa aveva appreso la storia di un suo zio morto in guerra. E infine Charles W. Chesnutt invita a riflettere, attraverso la vicenda di un barbiere, sul fatto che a decenni di distanza dalla Guerra Civile la popolazione di colore non ha ancora finito di combattere la propria battaglia.
