L'onda provocata da queste rivelazioni sconvolge il movimento comunista internazionale e provoca non poche crisi di coscienza. La destalinizzazione suscita speranze e rivolte nel blocco dei paesi dell'Est, represse nel sangue a Danzica e nell'Ungheria di Nagy. Mentre il Pci s'interroga sulla natura di quei regimi, anche il campo occidentale rafforza il suo stato parallelo e occulto e costituisce una rete clandestina anticomunista ispirata dalla Cia e dalla Nato. Nasce Gladio. Il Pci è stretto tra due fuochi e richiama al lavoro Antonio Sanna, per anni esponente del riservato Ufficio Quadri del partito. Sanna viene incaricato di scoprire cosa sia questa Gladio e se è vero che in Sardegna, a Capo Marrargiu, sia attivo un campo di addestramento segreto. Nel romanzo s'intrecciano le crisi di coscienza e riecheggiano i laceranti dibattiti dell'epoca. In una fitta serie di colpi di scena emerge il lato oscuro della Repubblica e le sue manovre illegali, l'azione dei servizi segreti americano e sovietico. Aggressioni, scoperte clamorose, fughe rocambolesche oltre cortina, e lo scontro della guerra fredda in Italia e in Sardegna. Ma il grande ingranaggio scricchiola. E Sanna alla fine sceglierà con sofferenza di stare da una parte della barricata.

Nato sordo negli anni Sessanta in una cittadina della provincia francese, Julien Laporte viene educato secondo i precetti del metodo "oralista": lunghe sedute di logopedia, complicati apparecchi acustici, e soprattutto nessun contatto con la lingua dei segni. A diciotto anni fugge di casa e in un bar di Parigi, tra attivisti sordi e militanti gay, scopre l'esistenza della lingua dei segni. Questa è la storia della sua liberazione: da un padre che si ostina a volerlo "guarire", da una madre ammutolita dai sensi di colpa e da tutta una famiglia devastata - non dalla sordità ma dai più banali malintesi, appunto, tra genitori e figli, per l'incapacità dei primi ad amare i figli così come sono. Nella vicenda di Julien la sordità non è solo l'elemento deflagratore di meccanismi solitamente invisibili nel romanzo famigliare, ma è anche il pretesto per raccontare una grande e sconosciuta storia: quella dei sordi e della loro liberazione attraverso la lingua dei segni. Pochi sanno che questo magnifico e inventivo linguaggio, elaborato in pieno Illuminismo, è stato di fatto bandito in Europa per più di un secolo, dopo il Congresso di Milano del 1880. Padre a sua volta di una ragazza sorda, Leclair rivela anche l'impasse in cui è finito: sono i suoi stessi personaggi a tirarlo in ballo, ora per accusarlo, ora per assolverlo. A metà strada tra autofiction, inchiesta e romanzo, Malintesi è dunque anche il racconto della difficoltà di scrivere, di essere genitore, di sopravvivere a quei pericolosi e pericolanti castelli di carte che sono tutte le famiglie.

Tutto il contrario di quanto Jan Palach ha voluto comunicare con il suo gesto, con il suo appello alla lotta per una vita degna di uomini liberi, credendo fino in fondo nel destino naturalmente libero degli uomini e nel loro diritto naturale alla libertà, diventando per questo un monito permanente e terribile soprattutto per quei popoli non liberi che subiscono tutte le angherie e gli abusi di potere senza fiatare.

Lee's earlier photographic work is included in a permanent collection at the Victoria & Albert Museum. Born in 1945 to parents who were both MI5 operatives Lee's life has followed anything but a conventional route. Dyslexia and an independent spirit saw Lee at the age of just seventeen emigrate to Australia where his passion for photography was kindled. Rescued from fighting in the Vietnam war by his parents' intervention Lee returned to the UK and began to establish a portfolio photographing bands. As his reputation grew Lee became in demand as a fashion photographer for magazines during the late sixties and seventies.
