La guerra (1936-1937)
br. È difficile capire per quale strana ragione la raccolta "La guerra", pur essendo stata pubblicata dallo stesso Antonio Machado, non sia poi stata inclusa nella sua integralità all'interno delle diverse edizioni della sua opera completa. Se la prima ragione di questa singolarità poteva risiedere nella lunga epoca franchista - dal momento che Machado, contrariamente al fratello Manuel, aveva aderito alla causa repubblicana e sarebbe poi morto proprio in seguito all'allontanamento da Barcellona e al faticoso viaggio verso la Francia -, resta invece più difficile darsi una spiegazione per le edizioni più recenti. Si tratta di un libro composito, dove, oltre alle poesie, tra le quali una famosa e splendida dedicata alla morte di Garcia Lorca (Il delitto fu a Granada), compaiono una serie di prose di diverso genere ma tutte legate al tragico periodo in cui sono state concepite, quello della guerra civile; un libro dunque molto particolare, ma non meno fondamentale per comprendere in tutta la sua complessità la figura di uno dei più grandi poeti del secolo scorso. Accompagna la nostra edizione un saggio di Jaume Pont - lo studioso catalano a cui va il merito di avere riportato l'attenzione su quest'opera - che inquadra perfettamente "La guerra" all'interno della sua cornice letteraria e storica.

Carmen Maria Machado mescola horror, fantascienza, realismo magico, erotismo e commedia; il risultato sono otto racconti stranianti e imprevedibili, in cui il corpo della donna e la sua carnalità diventano l'inquietante motore della creazione letteraria.

Don Casmurro
br. "Don Casmurro" di Machado de Assis apparve per la prima volta a Rio de Janeiro nel 1899. All'epoca lo scrittore era al termine della vita e aveva sia scritto opere importanti, come le "Memorie dell'aldilà" o il "Quincas Borba", ma con questo romanzo trovò qualcosa che ancora non era stato compiuto: quel punto di equilibrio vorticoso fra racconto e riflessione: il sentimento di una letteratura pensata come potente sguardo sul dolore. Con uno stile confidenziale, venato d'ironia e di una sottile malinconia, il protagonista, Bento Santiago, racconta al lettore la propria avventura umana segnata, sin dall'adolescenza, dall'amore per Capitu e dalla gelosia, il presunto tradimento di lei con il suo miglior amico, il progressivo rinchiudersi in un'esistenza cupa e isolata dal mondo, popolata di ricordi e di fantasmi. Una vicenda drammatica che però non si abbandona mai del tutto al pessimismo: con un tono arguto e un linguaggio permeato di aforismi il lettore segue le elucubrazioni di Bentinho, un flusso di pensieri che riflette la voce unica del suo autore, la cui prospettiva scettica e disincantata è nutrita da un umorismo cinico e quasi anglosasone che prevale sullo sguardo sconfitto di Bento. Grazie alla sua scrittura innovativa, "Don Casmurro" rimane ancora oggi un testo modernissimo e fondante della produzione letteraria brasiliana.

Da giovane studente diventerà un importante psichiatra proprio grazie all'attenta osservazione delle mani delle persone che gli stanno intorno e che plasmano la sua esistenza: la zia Letizia, geniale ma dal passato burrascoso; l'amica Nicoletta, in cerca di verità; il Professore Corrao, vittima di gravi turbamenti. In una Palermo in cui i bambini giocano ancora per strada e raccolgono legna per l'annuale "Vampa di San Giuseppe", una narrazione delicata che ci porta indietro nel tempo per capire quali siano i segni - interiori ed esteriori - di una vita che cambia. br. Come si fa a sopravvivere quando la tua giovane moglie ti è morta accanto, una notte, andandosene in un istante e lasciandoti solo con un figlio di nemmeno sei anni? Riccardo non lo sa come si fa, ma in qualche modo ci sta riuscendo. Sono passati otto mesi da quando Lisa non c'è più e padre e figlio si sono trasferiti per l'estate in una casa al mare, acquistata poco tempo prima della scomparsa di Lisa. Nicola è un bambino sveglio e sensibile, e ha una grande passione per lo yeti: è il suo argomento di discussione preferito, ne è affascinato e un po' lo teme. Riccardo è tormentato da un sogno ricorrente, le sue notti sono agitate e gettano ombre sulla quiete del comprensorio in cui abitano. In reviewing a book the hero of which laid so much stress upon education through the eye of sense we turn first as in duty bound to its outward appearance; and even before we open it we are struck with its binding in a beautiful subdued colour and with the artistic design on the back of the cover which is one of Morris's own borders. Then when it is opened we are struck with the clear bold mediaeval type which is worthy of Morris's own press at Kelmscott; and then with the exquisite illustrations from the drawings of Mr. E. H. New.
