London 1923. unbound. Both letters are signed "W. Rothenstein" written in London to Mrs. Sylvia Ollivant and measure 7 x 4.25 inches. In the first dated March 14 1923 1 page Rothenstein recommends one of his brightest students to undertake the task of illustrating her book. In the second March 17 1923 3 pages the artist apologizes when he finds out that the student never completed the assignment: ".If I say that you are not more disappointed than I am it is clearly an exaggeration. It was with keen disappointment and dismay that I discovered no drawings had been made." The first letter has a small hole in the logo in the upper left corner along with a diagonal crease and slight discoloration at the edges; very good- condition. The second letter is in near fine condition. British artist and engraver best known for his creative output during both World Wars. unknown

Il podere mostra tutti i segni della guerra. Lo stemma giace a terra in giardino, le travi della torre dell'orologio si ergono carbonizzate nel cielo, il portico è storto e danneggiato dopo un attacco dei caccia. "Il soldato Ivan è già sull'Oder", sussurrano le donne e sperano che quell'ultimo sussulto di guerra non si porti via, dopo gli uomini, anche i ragazzini del podere, come Walter e Fiete, mungitori dalla faccia pulita. Walter pensa che non lo spediranno mai al fronte. Sparava storto già nella Gioventù Hitleriana, ha gli occhi che non vanno, munge mucche, fa un lavoro che qualcuno deve pur fare. Inoltre, deve ancora finire di brigare con Elizabeth, la ragazza che fuma come una ciminiera e, con le sue sopracciglia, i riccioli neri e una sfrontatezza senza pari, sembra una zingara. Fiete, il suo amico più caro, ha il volto scarno, la carnagione imberbe, le ciglia lunghe e ricce e, se chiude gli occhi pesti, pare una ragazza. Quando beve, anziché dire "Heil Hitler", dice "Drei Liter". Ha già la fidanzata: Ortrud, dalle labbra rosse come nessuna. Insomma, è tutto fuorché un soldatino di piombo pronto a difendere l'onore della grande Germania. La Romania di Ceausescu tra farsa e tragedia. Il sentimento tragico della storia
br. La tragedia rappresenta uno dei più vasti ambiti di interesse e di indagine dal punto di vista letterario, teatrale e filosofico. Questo volume ricerca, nello specifico, un possibile "sentimento tragico della Storia", ispirandosi a Miguel de Unamuno. Si guarda a Karl Marx, quindi alla Storia come "tragedia" nell'interpretazione di Arnold Toynbee e di Oswald Spengler, alla dialettica tra tragedia e Storia di Lucien Goldmann - e György Lukács -, sino alla "tragedia del popolo" di Orlando Figes. Attraverso la definizione della Storia come tragedia e farsa, si procede a una doppia lettura di un contesto storico delimitato, quello della Romania di Nicolae ed Elena Ceausescu, identificando gli atti attraverso cui la tragedia della Storia si struttura, per poi ripresentarsi sotto forma di farsa. In particolare, si considerano la forma della farsa e il teatro delle minoranze magiare in Romania, capaci di rileggere la tragedia della Storia attraverso testi con elementi religiosi o di puro Assurdo, sino al ripresentarsi della Storia e dell'ideologia nella farsa di autori romeni come Stanescu, che fanno propri alcuni elementi della "revenge parody" a fine quasi catartico, nel reenactment dello svizzero Milo Rau, nei documentari di Andrei Ujica, o nei lavori di Matei Visniec e Norman Manea.
