Kicking Bird's close relationship with white men made enemies among his own people. At the same time the ranks of such War Chiefs a Satanta & Lone Wolf swelled as Hostile Kiowas continued raiding settlements in Texas. Capt. Carter went out after Kicking Bird in Texas in 1871 when Satanta was captured after the Salt Creek Massacre. In 1872 Kicking Bird and some of his Sub-Chiefs stayed at Fort Sill. He was poisoned in 1874 by his own people on account of a suspicion that he was becoming too friendly with the whites. See Howes #C-197. Very Rare!
