An interesting letter on agricultural wages with perceptive observations on the often significantly differing rates in distant parts of the country. It was essential claims this Devon magistrate to appreciate local circumstances and he provides here a brief but clearly well-observed portrait of the rural labour market in Devon wages other benefits and conditions of employment. Salter. 1831. 12mo. 24pp. old 19th century library stamp on blank margin of title with ink inscription in upper margin the inscription itself cropped preserved in modern wrappers with printed label on upper cover. A good copy. Only edition. An interesting perspective on wages with particular reference to local circumstances. 'No man whose life is spent in his own library can say what is a fair price for labour in different parts of the country because it must vary if brought to a matter of calculation with the varying price of every article which the labourer has to purchase and with the value of the work which he is to effect for his employer. This is proved by the mischief which arises from Combinations or Clubs in certain trades where all men employed in similar departments will be paid alike although their individual earnings may vary 30 or 40 per cent. L.A.S., Bordeaux, 22 mars 1814, 2pœ in-folio. Intéressante lettre de cet ancien fonctionnaire demandant une rente au duc d'Angoulême. Il a tout perdu, notamment sa rente provenant d'un prêt de 12000 francs au roi Louis XVI lors de l'édit de 1787 portant création de 6 millions de rentes viagères. Il loge près de Sainte-Eulalie à Bordeaux. La lettre est contresignée par Dinety, curé de Sainte Eulalie et Sanzay, l'archevêque de Bordeaux. Note en tête de la première page : « renvoié à son excell. Mgr le ministre des finances par ordre de S.A.R » signé par le comte de Marcellus, membre du conseil du duc d'Angoulême depuis la visite de ce dernier à Bordeaux en 1814, par Raymond de Sèze, H Vignon ( ?) et à nouveau par le comte de Marcellus. Une note indique ensuite que la demande est prématurée. Signautre de M. Viallon ( ?). Beau document, belle réunion de signatures. [132bis]
