The alphabet reform which came into effect in Turkey on November 1st, 1928, made reading and writing in Turkish easier compared to the system based on the Arabic script, and it also constituted the new face of Early Republic modernization, which defined its political rhetoric through a break from its Ottoman past. The National Schools (Millet Mektepleri) played a vital role in the campaign for teaching reading and writing with the new alphabet, while the press regime structured in 1934 under the direction of the General Directorate of the Press (Matbuat Umum Müdürlügü) played a key role in the formation of a culture of national press in the country. Just like its counterparts pursued in the 1930s in Europe, in the United States, and in the Soviet Union, the press regime that was in effect in Turkey during the Early Republic period was an efficient cultural management policy, because it utilized centralized policies to shape official and private publishing that was under the control of political powers and because it got masses to adopt the ideology of modernization through publishing that reached rural areas. In the 1930s, the common goal of the press regimes of socialist, fascist, or liberal government systems, which played an active role in mass communication and education policies was the transformation of the official ideology of modernization into social culture.

Inizia così l'educazione del contadino, da parte del cattolico, che riteneva indispensabile svelare al contadino la falsa propaganda del curato, spiegandogli che il papa è il successore di s.Pietro e non deve immischiarsi nella politica.

Prima e dopo la conquista del potere, durante la guerra, e pure nelle sue tragiche battute finali. Nella Berlino in fiamme dell'aprile 1945, assediata dalle truppe dell'Armata Rossa, con il Terzo Reich ridotto a un nodo di strade, la macchina propagandistica di Joseph Goebbels, seppellito nel bunker sotto la Nuova Cancelleria, insiste con il suo canto di veleno. Lo fa attraverso l'ultimo giornale del regime, il «Panzerbär» («l'orso corazzato»), distribuito a mano e gratuitamente, quando ormai tutto è perduto e solo la paranoia di Hitler intravede un futuro diverso. Pubblicato dal 22 al 29 aprile 1945 nella voragine creata dalle granate e in mezzo al frastuono dei carri armati sovietici, racconta una realtà della guerra completamente falsificata, incitando i berlinesi a un'estrema e impossibile resistenza e condannandoli a un infimo e scontato sacrificio. Mari ricostruisce e indaga l'intera vicenda di questo foglio propagandistico per valutarne il significato, il linguaggio, le caratteristiche meramente giornalistiche e il suo impatto sull'opinione pubblica, mettendo sistematicamente a confronto realtà e narrazione. Nel volume sono anche riprodotti per la prima volta tutti gli otto numeri del giornale - compreso il primo, quasi introvabile - e sono pubblicate le traduzioni dei principali articoli.
