[Boston Fire Fighting]
Signed Manuscript Letter Regarding a Plan for Fighting Fire in Boston.

Letter sheets 8" x 12" 3 pages plus integral address leaf. Extensive tape repairs to folds mostly archival tape but some regular tape too which has caused a little browning in areas long tear obscures writers signature but partially visible creased normal aging and browning remnant of wax seal; otherwise good or better. The letter is to Boston Mayor Josiah Quincy 1772-1864 a future head of Harvard and served eight years in Congress. It appears after becoming Boston's mayor he sent delegates to New York and Philadelphia to study fire fighting techniques in those cities. The author of this letter read about this mission and sent Mayor Quincy a lengthy letter on the subject. The probable author is Solon Robinson 1803-1880 although his signature is partially obscured by a tear. However on the back page a smudged docketed note identifies him as Solon Robertson or Robinson. Robinson was a writer and would become a well known Indiana pioneer. In any case the author would suggest a far more modern system for fighting fires than the existing practice of engines carrying water to fires which would become useless when the water ran out. he proposed putting lead aqueduct pipes "laid deep underground and leading to every part of the city." While her does not use the term fire hydrants the water would be accessed from locked iron covers that would serve that function. ABN.

[CHURCH AND STATE BY THE OWNER OF THE GREAT MAP OF CHINA] SELDEN, JOHN
The Historie of Tithes. That is the practice of payment of them. The positive laws made for them. The opinions touching the right of them. A review of it is also annext which both confirmes it and directs in the use of it.
London.: No pubisher. 1618. 6 xxii 12 491 5 pages title page printed in red and black dedication preface contents references errata 18.4 x 14.8 cms endpapers renewed with the original front endpapers laid down aged-toned and chipped title-page toned and a little faded upper corner chipped with the inked owners' inscription of Thos. Bryan Richards 1798 and Wm. Cooke early inked marginalia and underlining; contemporary hollow-backed vellum manuscript author and title on the spine tidemark to the lower corner of the text leaves affecting the margin only a good sound copy. First edition of an antiquarian classic by John Selden 1584-1654 eminent jurist polymath prolific scholar and in recent times celebrated for his ownership of the earliest surviving Chinese merchant map of East Asia re-discovered with justifiable fanfare as a treasure of the Bodleian Library by Robert Batchelor in 2008.

At the time of its release Selden's "The History of Tithes": "gave great offense to the clergy and was vigorously refuted in a number of volumes to which Selden was forbidden the right to print replies" Pforzheimer. It has been noted that the absence of the printer's name and the place of publication showed that Selden anticipated an unfavourable reaction to his denial of divine right of tithes. He was not disappointed. The work was suppressed and Selden was forced to apologize for having given offense-- and the book was withdrawn from circulation. His work was much studied: this copy with early marginalia: "by this Historie the Right of tithing belong not to ye profession of ye Canonist Civilian or Divine but with Lawyers." the last three words hastily crossed out.

Early owners include London Antiquary Thomas Bryan Richards whose extensive Library was sold by King & Lochée in 1812. . [Connecticut State Society of Children of the American Revolution] Virginia L Stowell
Three Original Pieces of Art for the Unpublished Work "Civilians at War
Waterbury Connecticut 1943. Very Good. Waterbury CT 1943. Three original drawings 45x30.5cm using pencil and red blue and black ink on stiff paper stock; all signed and dated by Virginia L. Stowell 1943. Stock a bit unevenly toned and lightly soiled small loss to bottom left-hand corner of two images not approaching text or image; overall Very Good.

Three original illustrations including what appears to have been the proposed pictorial title page of an unpublished pamphlet titled "Civilians at War" a guide to the ongoing warfare and production now that the United States had entered World War II. Apart from the title page the illustrations depict examples of demolition and general purpose bombs by size from 100 to 4000 pounds accompanied by a nattily-clad gent for size. A dissected view of the 300 lb. general bomb is also provided. The third illustration shows the twelve Civilian Defense Emblems from auxiliary police and firemen to rescue and decontamination squads.

The work almost certainly composed by fifteen-year-old Virginia Lee Stowell 1928-1994 of Waterbury Connecticut a major metal manufacturing hub during the War its Scoville Manufacturing Co. employing as many as 10000 workers at peak production. At the age of seventeen Stowell joined the Cadet Nursing Corps in March 1945 though by the time she received her certificate of membership on September 4th the war had been over for two days. Whether Stowell would have made a better nurse than draughtswoman is questionable though it is entirely possible that her impressively inked bombs were traced. unknown

[Empire State Building]
Shreve Lamb & Harmon Plans for the Empire State Building's Information Desk Basement and Foundation.

Architectural diagram plans for the construction of the Empire State Building. 8 items all pencil on paper or tracing vellum various sizes ranging from 8x13 inches to 36x48 inches. Included are 5 plot plans showing the building's outline and the surrounding streets and properties 5 section plans of existing vaults and the machine room 2 sub-basement plans and the details of the pit for the refrigeration unit. Condition varies but is generally very good; most of the plans have minor folds or tears in the margins. The freight elevator plan has some tape repairs on the reverse but is not obtrusive. A plan showing a map of 34th and 33rd Streets has the most damage with tears in the margin some pieces missing and some significant wrinkling; probably the least important plan in this collection. Eight of the plans will be shipped rolled. The 102 story landmark Empire State Building was completed in 1931 on the former site of the original Waldof-Astoria Hotel. The cost of construction was about $41 million estimates suggest that today's cost would be close to $600 million and was completed in less than a year and a half. The building was designed by William Lamb of Shreve Lamb and Harmon whose plans are included in this collection. Considered as the "Eight Wonder of the World" when it opened the building has had its share of notoriety both good and bad. Suicides a shooting on the observation deck and even a plane crashing into it in 1945 have been part of the dark side of the building's history. However this iconic art deco building is as popular as ever and probably one of the busiest tourist attractions in New York City. One of the most significant parts of this architectural collection is the plan for the rather famous information desk. Other parts include plans for the sub-basement the machine room pit for the freight elevators and refrigeration unit and several plans illustrating the building's outline on the surrounding streets. A unique collection of New York City history. History1900s about website.

[Franzen, Carl, ed]
Minnesota products. The magazine with the thin flappy record. Issue 4
Minneapolis: Minnesota Products 1976. Floppy vinyl record enclosed in 9½" x 9½" printed envelope; the envelope printed with an illustrated cover and track list; a few short tears and some toning on the sleeve the contents not inspected as the envelope remains sealed as issued though some peeking reveals what appears to be a relief printed card sleeve and vinyl on the inside. From an article in Insider Magazine's July 1976 issue: "Minnesota Products is an idea that has been developing for a couple of years in the mind of Carl Franzen who makes money in advertising and spends it part of it anyway on music. Carl got together with George Hansen owner of the Symposium and Flashlight record labels and Bob Zeller whose name you may recall in connection with the album 'Heavy Gunz' a Midwest underground classic of a few years back to work out the feasibility of the project." The magazine was envisioned as a non-profit project and highlighted artists mostly musicians "who haven't chosen a strong commercial route. Listeners can look forward to hearing jazz original compositions and traditional forms like blue-grass folk and blues." All acts were local to Minnesota. Given the date of the announcement and the projected release schedule Issue 4 was likely released in late 1976 or early 1977. The artists featured include Howard Mohr the John O'Brien Ensemble Steve Tibbetts Albatross Quartet Ann Reed and Judy Foster. The Insider article announces this project as "The world's first magazine on record" and we are at least not aware of any earlier projects. And outside of a Chinese database entry for this exact issue and a couple of mentions of the magazine in musical retrospectives the series is entirely obscure. OCLC records 3 copies of issue three 1 of issue 2 and separately what may be a full run of issues 1-4 at the Minnesota Historical Society. Minnesota Products unknown
