Portland OR: Hotel Hoyt RARE Worldcat locates 2 copies advertising brochure for the legendary Portland Hotel Hoyt. No Date circa 191. Near Fine small 1/4" tears at folds. 1 folded sheet. 6 pages : color illustrations with color drawing of the hotel color photos of two of the rooms and the lobby rates and 4 paragraphs of description. The hotel featured 200 rooms and 100 private baths. Built in 1912 the Hoyt closed in 1972 and was demolished in 1977. Advertising Trade Card Aloha - Clifton's "Pacific Seas" 618 Olive St. Los Angeles
Los Angeles: Clifton's Pacific Seas Cafeteria 1939. No date circa 1940. Clifton's Cafeteria opened in the early 1930's during the height of the Great Depression and instituted a "Pay As You Wish" policy seen in fine print on the card never turning away a customer and giving away many free meals. In 1939 it underwent a complete renovation and was transformed into a 3-story restaurant with South Pacific "Tiki" theme called Clifton's Pacific Seas. After Jack Kerouac ate there he made mention of it in "On the Road". The restaurant closed and was demolished in 1960. The card is Very Good small corner creases. Verso of card is blank. . Sibley not included in the first edition of the same year; 8vo 32pp. original yellow printed wrappers; wrappers curled and soiled some chipping and edge creases; a good copy of an early piece of Minnesota printing done by Minnesota's first printer and in only the second year of printing in the newly organized territory. Includes the original Act to Incorporate Constitution By-Laws list of members and the text of an address by Minnesota's first historian the Rev. Edward D.Neil concluding with the words "As the second edition of the Annals is going through the press the news is received that a party of Dakotas from Kaposia and Red Wing villages have made an attack on some unsuspecting Ojibwas and taken a boy as a captive and fourteen scalps. Upon their return they danced the scalp-dance in the streets of Stillwater. The captive being placed in the center of the ring formed by the dancers the reeking scalps of his relatives were occasionally shaken in his face." This copy with the scrawled signature of Prof. W.M.
