"This book approaches the Ottoman period of Robert College, founded by American missionaries in Constantinople in 1863, by focusing on hitherto insufficiently explored aspects of its sesquicentennial history, related to its nature and educational ideals, as well as to its student body. Being based on the college's archives, dispersed in Turkey and the United States, the government archives of Ottoman and early republican period, as well as other vernacular archives, the book delineates the specific place and role of the college in the field of Ottoman education by promoting Protestant ideals through liberal education. The so-called "secular Protestantism" affected the whole concept of education practiced at the college and it affected more or less the students' mindset. The college put emphasis on the formation of strong characters in its students so as to make them able to take responsibility for their own life and development. It was achieved, not only nor even mainly through the course of studies in a wide variety of fields, but also through the all-round atmosphere in the college and especially the personal relationship between the students and their instructors. On the basis of statistics drawn from various relevant sources, the book traces out the dynamics in student enrollment and outlines those periods in the college's history in which certain nationalities were prevalent, not only in terms of physical presence but also in terms of influence in the student body. The book provides also prosopographical research of the Bulgarian and Turkish students, based on data collected from the catalogues of students, preserved in the college's archives. Orlin Sabev (Orhan Salih by birth), born in Shumen (Bulgaria) in 1970, is Associate Professor at the Institute of Balkan Studies with Centre for Thracology of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (Sofia). He obtained a Ph. D. in history at the same institute in 2000. He has published three books, two of them in Bulgarian, dealing with history of Ottoman education in the Bulgarian lands between fifteenth and eighteenth century (2001) and with the introduction of the first Ottoman Turkish printing press in Constantinople (2004). The latter came out also in Turkish translation in 2006 under the title 'Ibrahim Müteferrika ya da ilk Osmanli Matbaa Serüveni (1726-1746). Yeniden Degerlendirme'. He has more than hundred articles dealing with various topics in the field of education, book history, print culture, and sexuality in Ottoman society.".

Höcker was a German author of historical novels for children and a stage actor. Oskar Höcker was born in a suburb of Eilenburg, in the Prussian Province of Saxony, as was his brother, author Gustav Höcker. He was educated in Chemnitz. At the age of 19 he became an apprentice actor with F.W. Porth, a well-established actor for the royal court in Dresden, Kingdom of Saxony. He performed in Bremen, Rostock, Reichenberg, Stettin, Meiningen, and from 1866 to 1882 at the court in Karlsruhe. In 1883 his career shifted to Berlin, where he played on all the big stages and was a member of the Deutsches Theater. Oscar Blumenthal referred to him as one of the company's most players, and critic Otto Brahm praised his "discrete art," comparing him to Josef Kainz. He later joined the Lessing Theater. To support his ever-increasing family (he had ten children) he began a second career as writer of children's books, and after 1870 published regularly for the well-known publisher Arnold Hirt of Leipzig. Especially in the south of Germany his books (which came to be known as Höckerle) became very popular. In many of the books he authored he attempted to educate young readers in the history of the Christian church and the cultural history of Germany. His magnum opus is a series of five cycles of historical novels, totaling 20 volumes, on the development of the German bourgeoisie, Frederick II of Prussia and the history of Prussia, the Imperial German Navy, the history of Germany since the Reformation, and the history of Christianity. He died from a nervous condition at the height of his theatrical and publishing career, in Berlin. His son, Paul Oskar Höcker, also became a writer. This book is the second book of Höcker. Ex-libris. First edition of this extremely rare first science fiction book discusses the biological probability of the possibility of life on planets in the Solar System, with semi-fictional texts, in the light of scientific knowledge at the time of publication. Osman Nuri Eralp was a Turkish veterinarian and microbiologist. Eralp was born in Istanbul in the Ottoman Empire. He completed his university education at "Mekteb-i Tibbiye-i Mülkiye" which was the medical school of Darülfünun [i.e. House of Multiple Sciences, name of Istanbul University in Ottoman era]. To continue studying for a post-graduate qualification, he attended Sorbonne and Pasteur Institute. After graduation, he worked as a veterinarian while continuing his research studies. After the declaration of the Constitutional Regime in 1908, he worked as a full-time academic at Istanbul University and Ankara University. He lectured on histology and embryology. Eralp contributed notably to the field of bacteriology via his research on microorganisms (tuberculosis, anthrax, cholera, syphilis, gonorrhea), and the field of virology by his research on rinderpest. He wrote the first science fiction book in Turkey titled "Baska dünyalarda canli mahlûkât var midir" [i.e. Are there alive creatures in other worlds?]. (Wikipedia). Includes documents from both Oswego State Normal School and later material from Oswego State Teachers College which the school was renamed in 1942 when it began to grant 4-year bachelor's degrees. 15 x 11 inches. Original paper wraps. 76 pages. Large color image of fall foliage on front cover. Originally belonged to Marjorie O. Walker of Woodridge NY. Many official documents from the school including the 1940 admission letter to the school which also mentions the demand for this type of education: "Since we have a waiting list of applicants for admission we must have the enclosed blank properly filled out within ten days." The final pages of the album are filled with clippings and notices regarding a catastrophic fire which caused an estimated $100000 in damages in January 1941. From a special issue of the school paper: "Carrying coupling and manning hoses students of the Oswego Normal school worked shoulder to shoulder with firemen to supply t he lifeline of water which finally checked the rapidly spreading flames that at firs appeared beyond control." Despite the destroyed portion of campus there are numerous documents regarding "Business As Usual" around campus and an updated exam schedule to accommodate classes which met in the destroyed building. The State University of New York at Oswego was founded in 1861 as the Oswego Primary Teachers' Training School; this institution embraced and popularized some of the most innovative teaching methods of the day. The school led the Oswego Movement of educational reform in the United States which sought to emphasize that every aspect of the child's life contributed to the formation of their personality character and capacity to reason. These educational methods were child-centered and based on individual differences sense perception and the student's self-activity. In 1942 the New York state legislation elevated Oswego from a Normal School to the 4-year bachelor's degree-granting Oswego State Teachers College. A printed vertical line of the document divides into two parts of the document is for early bilingual ones of especially the Imperial periods of Turks. The document includes the earliest printed form of moon and star. Split on middle, restored. A very good paper. Rare.

San Francisco CA: Overland Monthly Magazine. Very Good. 1930. Magazine. This is an oversized magazine. The magazine is in Very Good condition and was issued without a dust jacket. There is an inked previous owner's notation on the front cover of the magazine. There is some light rubbing and wear to the spine ends corners and edges of the covers along with some beginning tearing to the bottom spine ends of the magazine cover. The front cover of the magazion has a vertical crease the entire length of the magazine. The text pages are clean and bright. Included is a small poem by Clark Ashton Smith. "Clark Ashton Smith January 13 1893 August 14 1961 was an American writer and artist. He achieved early local recognition largely through the enthusiasm of George Sterling for traditional verse in the vein of Swinburne. As a poet Smith is grouped with the West Coast Romantics alongside Joaquin Miller Sterling and Nora May French and remembered as "The Last of the Great Romantics" and "The Bard of Auburn". Smith's work was praised by his contemporaries. H. P. Lovecraft stated that "in sheer daemonic strangeness and fertility of conception Clark Ashton Smith is perhaps unexcelled" and Ray Bradbury said that Smith "filled my mind with incredible worlds impossibly beautiful cities and still more fantastic creatures".
