‎(CURRIER & IVES -- LINCOLN, Abraham)‎

‎Abraham Lincoln The Nations Martyr Assassinated April 14th 1865‎

‎New York: Currier & Ives n.y. 1865. Folio 11" X 13½". Good plus. Mild even age toning with occasional small foxing; roughly ¼" wide age toned strip mat burn running down full length of right margin about ½" from right edge but not affecting image area -- homely but not terribly defacing; bottom margin has clearly been trimmed coming up just beneath the "New York Published by Currier & Ives 152 Nassau St" line. Overall a clean fairly attractive example of this desireable Lincoln lithograph which is based on Anthony Berger's famed portrait taken in February 1864. unknown‎

‎(DOUGLAS, Stephen A)‎

‎Addresses on the Death of Hon. Stephen A. Douglas Delivered in the Senate and House of Representatives on Tuesday July 9 1861‎

‎Washington D.C.: Government Printing Office 1861. Paperback. Small 4to. Original tan printed wrappers. 92pp. Good plus. Almost but not quite rates a "Very good" -- just a mild bit of edgewear and couple of tiny chips at extremities. Many of Douglas' Illinois colleagues -- Isaac Arnold and Orville H. Browning among them -- contribute to this collection of eulogies. First edition -- a tight and handsome copy bearing a nice autograph addition: The top of the front wrapper bear a bold signature and inscription: "Clinton D. Sellew / from Thos. A. Doyle." Doyle 1827-86 was long-time mayor of Providence Rhode Island from 1852 off and on through his death. Sellew whose pencilled ownership signature appears on the title page was a local public official and later postmaster of Providence. This pamphlet is also found in a yellow wrapper but no priority has been established. SABIN 20696. Government Printing Office paperback‎

‎(Dunn, C P) (controller, State of California)‎

‎Autograph letter signed. 1885‎

‎1885. Trade Paperback. 4 page letter. J. P. Dunn was Controller State of California 1883-1891. Edward C. Marshall was the Attorney General of California from 1883-1887. Autograph letter signed 4-pages on Controller's Department State of California letterhead dated Nov. 19 1885 from 'Clark.' Letter is responding to a request from Dunn who is in San Francisco for a copy of 'the Kentucky tax decision.' The letter continues with praise for the success of Dunn's efforts 'to make the Monarchs of the Rail bend their necks to the just yoke of the State.Stay right at San Francisc until no stone is left unturned against any possible act being done to render this triumph futile.' Letter continues to praise Dunn and criticize 'Marshall' 'in which his own action and lack of action to save the interests of the State he is sworn to protect writes the word damnable in red letters over his official name' and continues 'the lousy coin that corrupted his official palm was a prize more valuable in price to him than pure life and spotless character.' And 'he now harvests in callous-heartedness the sheaves of disgrace the waving fields from which he might have reaped honor and renown'.'The Governor is enjoying the victory hugely.' Excellent content. About 525 words.<br> paperback‎

" the booklet is a very scarce and fascinating item of Californiana . . . a work of literary curiosity and a classic example of self-righteous invective and vituperation." ‎(GALENA, ILLINOIS -- LEDGER BOOK)‎

‎Business Ledger‎

‎N.p.: N.p. 1883. Hardcover. Narrow 4to 8" X 13". Calf spine and pebbled paper over boards. 180pp. Good plus. Quite edgeworn and rubbed with rounded outer corners but calf strong and nice; fairly tight and unrestored fully handleable. This typically cryptic ledger book hails from Ulysses S. Grant's adopted hometown of Galena in Jo Daviess County an important lead mining center at one time thought to become the great hub of Midwest commerce. Consisting of pages lined in blue and red the first 170 pages each bear a large "Trial Balance" and date penned boldly in brown ink -- the largest column beneath consisting of a row of names of individuals businesses and institutions and two columns of numbers to the right of this. All are immaculately penned in the same quite attractive and legible hand. Perusing these pages one finds many a notable citizen of the day -- S.O. Stillman John Nichols B.F. Felt others -- and an array of businesses -- to name a few one finds regular entries for Merchandise National Bank Reynolds & Chapman D. Wilkinson & Co. F.W. Strattman & Co. and other local business. The large and broad array of institutions includes S.S. Mission Fund School Fund Masonic Charity Fund Jo Daviess Chapter Agricultural Society Miners Lodge State Insurance Fund Citizens League and others. Pages 171 through 180 consist of boldly pencilled "Bills Receivable Trial Balance" sheets. Although no business name appears anywhere within this ledger book nor internal clues to identify the business the eclectic nature of the entries and the relatively large sums of money in the credit and debit columns suggests this ledger book originated from a banking institution. An intriguing item worth further research. N.p. hardcover‎

‎N.p.: N.p. n.y. Hardcover. Small 4to. Full green calf with gilt spine lettering. Pp. 681-696 rectos only. 12 steel engravings 1 map. Very good. Mildly edgeworn with spine and binding edges irregularlysunned to golden brown. Bibliographically cryptic but clearly relatively recent i.e. post-WW2 facsimile reprint of this 16-page extract from the May 1866 issue of "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" Vol. XXXII No. CXCII -- an article that follows up on U.S. Grant's postwar fame profiling the famed lead mining town in northwest Illinois that had become his home just prior to the Civil War. Front wrapper engraving depicts Galena's Main Street bulging with people assembled to hear the returning hero. A massive banner spans the street proclaiming "Hail to the Chief Who in Triumph Advances." Though an extract it is self-contained and sought after in its own right. This undated reprint circa 1970 is printed on an off-white stock artificially age toned to lend it a period feel. It's also slightly enlarged from the original. Scarce. N.p. hardcover‎

‎Lincoln's Gettysburg Address: The immortal words of Abraham Lincoln at the Gettysburg battlefield November 19 1863 on the occasion of the dedication of the National Military Cemetery.‎

‎N.p. Springfield: Illinois Commission 1964. Broadside. Folio 30" X 23". Fine. Superb broadside printing of the Gettysburg Address created specifically for the 1964-65 New York World's Fair. Below the large headline in deep blue this typographically interesting piece depicts the Illinois State Historical Society's holograph version of Lincoln's masterpiece at center at actual size in deep purple. To the left of this facsimile the same text appears in four languages each printed in a different color: Hebrew deep purple Japanese blue Greek green and French red. To the right of the facsimile the text appears in another four languages again with each printed in a different color: German blue Spanish green Russian deep purple and Latin red. Ralph G. Newman founder of Chicago's noted Abraham Lincoln Book Shop was a member of the Illinois Civil War Centennial Commission and was no doubt instrumental in having this piece created. Interest in all things Lincoln and Civil War was high at this centennial time and the New York World's Fair held a special Illinois Day as well. Walt Disney's famed Abraham Lincoln talking robot was debuted at this same World's Fair. The broadside was designed by Carl Regehr and printed by Gregg-Moore Lithographing Company. It is in exceptionally bright fresh condition. unknown‎

‎(NAUVOO, Illinois -- MORMONS)‎

‎Nauvoo from the Mississippi Looking Down the River‎

‎Hand-colored steel-engraved newspaper print ca. 10" X 8" image size 9" X 7" n.p. n.y. 1853 or 1854. Near fine. A clean and attractive example of this charming scene of the tiny west central Illinois city associated with Joseph Smith and the Mormons before their westward flight. No artist's or engravers name appears in the margins. This image first appeared in the July 8 1853 issue of the "New-York Illustrated News" then on July 22 1854 the identical image was published in "Gleason's Pictorial Drawing-Room Companion" in Boston. This particular example has been simply and tastefully hand colored and is framed under a single cream matte in a modern 3/4" wood frame all archival and quite handsome -- overall dimensions 15" X 13". Removal from the framing would of course allow determination which printing this is based on the typeset text on verso but the engraving plate is identical in either case. A beautiful example of this memorable early image of the famed Mormon site elegantly presented. unknown‎
