12TH CENTURY ENGLISH MANUSCRIPT LEAF ON VELLUM.
folio manuscript leaf on vellum from: GREGORY I Saint 'The Great' Pope c540-604. Homiliae In Evangelia.

Pope Gregory has been eulogized as "one of the most notable figures in Ecclesiastical History. He has exercised in many respects a momentous influence on the doctrine the organization and the discipline of the Catholic Church. To him we must look for an explanation of the religious situation of the Middle Ages: indeed if no account were taken of his work the evolution of the form of mediaeval Christianity would be almost inexplicable. And further in so far as the modern Catholic system is a legitimate development of mediaeval Catholicism of this too Gregory may not unreasonably be termed the Father. Almost all the leading principles of the later Catholicism are found at any rate in germ in Gregory the Great." Dudden Gregory the Great I p. v His Homilies on the Gospels were a series of instructions made to the faithful on the chief texts of the Gospels read in church throughout the liturgical year. These forty sermons first preached in 591-92 at the beginning of his papacy were extremely popular and were among the most widely read and highly venerated texts of the Middle Ages. Some 400 medieval manuscripts of the homilies survive and they were frequently printed beginning in 1473. Because Gregory illustrated dogma with numerous examples drawn from life the text contains significant anecdotes regarding Gregory himself and contemporary events at a trying time when Rome and Italy were subjected to flooding pestilence Lombard invasions and the death of Pope Pelagius II. The present leaf contains the end of Homily 12 and the beginning of Homily 13 which opens midway on the verso.
[cEngland: c1160].

15th/16th Century Antiphonary
Mudejar Illuminated Manuscript on Parchment Iberian Plainchant Book for the Common Time
15th/16th Century. Folio580 x 430mm. Contemporary full leather on wooden boards with metal hardware and metal knobs in each corner of both boards. Original spine with the inner headcaps intact. Handwritten and illuminated antiphonary on parchment containing 159 folios--each measuring 530 x 390mm-- numbered I through CLIX with musical scores square black notations on red score with clefs. Some hand-sewn restorations on the parchment appear on 43 folios and may either be original additions or later repairs. It would appear that these folios have been widely used from the 15th century up until quite recently as attested to by the side notes. Three folios 1 59 and 138 have been illustrated with frontispieces each having an illuminated capital letter and floral frames on the margins. Folio 1 shows Saint Dominic on the top holding a church or convent and leaves and swirls designed on the margins. Saint Dominic appears later on the top right margin of folio 59 as does the Portuguese cross of Christ and blossoms of the pomegranate tree and cork oak which are symbols of wisdom and resilience. A wonderful and unique plainsong book. A fantastic antiphonary which has its origins in the Iberian Peninsula-- possibly Portugal or the Southern part of Spain-- from a Dominican Abbey or Convent as implied by the iconography of the saint and the convent and the patronymic of the devotion in the antiphons. The plainsong book is divided into three parts: an Introduction; Worship or Mass of the Festivity of Saint Dominic; Office or Mass for the Dead. The plainsong book is complete with no index folio and ending with a complete antiphon that does not take up the entire parchment. There are 30 lines per page which leaves more space for the illuminated capitals-- similar books have 40 lines per page and less detailed illuminations as a result. The apocryphal marginal notations are in a cursive calligraphy presumably from the 16th century and on in Spanish and in the latter portion of the book Portuguese. Due to the size of the book and the materials used this is a remarkably heavy item-- please inquire for further information and a detailed description. hardcover

16TH CENTURY MEDICINE CAPIVACCIO Girolamo 1523 1589
Medicina practica sive Methodus cognoscendorum & curandorum omnium corporis humani affectuum
Venice: apud haeredes Melchioris Sessae 1598. First Venice Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Folio 310 x 210mm. 2175pp. 1 301pp. 2 12pp. 175pp. 1. Contemporary dark brown goatskin title and preliminaries lacking and supplied in early manuscript with illustrated printers device some browning and staining least severe after page 9. 17th-century inscriptions on rear endpaper for Index Capitum a medical students description of the various parts. Pictorial wood-engraved ex-libris by Leo Wyatt for Lord Norwich on front endpaper.

First Venice Edition of Capivaccios philosophical practica in Galenic teachings a pillar for medical students of the Renaissance. First edition printed in Frankfurt in 1594 under the title Practica Medicina. Capivaccios lectures were posthumously edited by Johann Hartmann Beyer. This is the first Venice edition of these lectures on the healing sciences by one of the leading Italian medical practitioners of his time is edited by Giovanni Bernardo Sessa. Capivaccio died at Padua in 1589 where he had taught at the university for 27 years. He was a specialist in venereal diseases for which he had developed certain successful cures guarding his secrets jealously from colleagues. Capivaccio applied a philosophical approach to his practica so much so that it is doubtful if it was ever much used as a vade mecum. By writing at such great lengths it is clear Capivaccio wished to educate students rather than give them a handbook. Apart from the wish to restore Galenic teachings and to educate students one motive for Capivaccios practica may have been to bolster the claims of university doctors over the central providers of medical expertise in the Renaissance namely priests wise-women magicians herbalists and travelling empirics. This work important to the reform of the practice of medicine and to the wider concept of dogmatism or rationalism in medicine the Renaissance physician could use Capivaccios work to locate the causes of diseases as well as its signs.
