‎Ohne Ort [Büdingen?], Brüder-Gemeinen ohne Jahr [1747]. Titel, (14), 454, (2) Seiten. 8° (17,5 x 10,5 cm). Gesprenkelter brauner Lederband der Zeit mit dekorativer, kassettenförmiger Rokoko-Vergoldung und zwei farbigen, goldgeprägten Titelschildern auf dem Rücken, Stehkantenvergoldung, Vorsätzen aus Kamm-Marmorpapier und blau gefärbtem Schnitt.‎

‎Erste, noch nicht entschärfte Ausgabe der wichtigen Zeister Reden Zinzendorfs in einem schönen zeitgenössischen Einband, sehr selten. - Zum Besuch des Grafen in Holland vgl. Spangenberg, Leben Zinzendorfs 1642f. - Die Reden vor den niederländischen Erweckten sind u.a. deswegen von Bedeutung, weil Zinzendorf in ihnen mehrfach ureigenste Herrnhuter-Themen wie Sekten, Separatismus, Absonderung von der Landeskirche, Blut- und Wundenkultus, Ehefragen etc. behandelt. Es gibt nur wenige Sammlungen von Reden und Predigten, in denen Zinzendorf sich derart explizit erklärt; die Deutlichkeit der Darlegungen ist dem besonderen Kontext (Stärkung der rechten Gläubigkeit und des brüderlichen Zusammenhalts in der Diaspora) und der ohnehin bildreich-drastischen Sprache der 'Sichtungszeit' geschuldet. - "Mit dem niederländischen Oranierhof kann Z. 1736 die Gründung von Heerendyk ('s Heerendijk, Baronie Ysselstein [Ijsselstein]) aushandeln, die zugleich Ausgangspunkt für die Seemission werden wird, doch sieht sich die Kolonie ab 1738 Anfeindungen der Reformierten (Hervormde Kerk) ausgesetzt, die den Herrnhutern ihre Kirchenräume und -einrichtungen verschließen; erst 1745 faßt die von den Mennoniten unterstützte Brüdergemeine in Zeist (Gemeindegründung 1746) richtig Fuß" (BBKL). - Aus der ersten Rede ('Von dem Trost der Kinder GOttes, die um des Heilands und seiner sache willen, von ihrer väterlichen religion verlassen werden'): "Es kostet dem menschen etwas, seine geistlichen und leiblichen väter zu verleugnen, und zwischen ihnen heraus zu brechen, ums Heilands und seiner sache willen [...] Die anhänglichkeit oder furcht vor seinen eltern und vorfahren, von denen man entweder geboren und erzogen worden, oder die einem die principia der religion beygebracht haben, ... die gehet so weit, daß sie die idéen von sich selbst, noch übersteiget: so, daß es einem menschen eine grosse überwindung kostet, sich in ansehung des Heilandes, von seinen leiblichen eltern und vorfahren ... selbst im nothfall, loß zu machen [...] An statt eurer vorfahren, eures geschlechts, anstatt eurer vorgesetzten, lehrer und führer, anstatt der religion, darinnen ihr erzogen und geboren seyd, die euch aber nun nicht haben mag, sondern euch ausstößt ... wird der Heiland euch selber saamen und nachkommen geben, die werden wieder oeconomien anfangen, familien, vaterschaften...". - Die zweite Ausgabe von 1759 wurde von Zinzendorf um diese und andere Predigten gekürzt und deutlich entschärft; von der Sammlung selbst hat er sich aber nie distanziert: "Indem ich die zum Zeyster-Synodo A. 1746. gehörige Discurse wieder durchlese, so finde ich sie, in der that, unter allen meinen Schriften apart ausgezeichnet" (Nota zur zweiten Auflage). - Gering berieben, Rücken mit oberflächlichen kleinen Längsrissen im Bezug. Vergoldung etwas abgerieben. - Besitzeinträge auf dem Vorsatz, hinterer fliegender Vorsatz mit einer Liste von Bibelstellen eng von alter Hand beschrieben. - Einige saubere, ältere Unterstreichungen in blasser roter und schwarzer Tinte. - Einige Tintenflecke, ungefähr 15 Blätter mit bräunendem Wasserrand an der vorderen Blattecke unten. - Gering gebräunt. - Gutes und insgesamt sauberes Exemplar. - Meyer, Bibliogr. ‎Gutes Exemplar der sog. Berthelsdorfer Reden des Gründers der Herrnhuter Brüder-Unität in der ersten Ausgabe. - "Bedeutsames Zeugniß aus den letzten Lebensjahren des Grafen" (Erich Beyreuther). - Bei vorliegendem Exemplar die 'Huldigungs-Rede, gehalten an die sämtliche zur Huldigung versamlete Unterthanen, am 31. Jul. 1756' nachgebunden statt - wie bei den meisten Exemplaren - zwischen Vorrede und Haupttext geheftet. - "Vom Anfange dieses Jahrs [1738] bis zu Ende August wohnte der Graf in Bertholdsdorf, und war sehr dankbar gegen den Heiland für die Gnadenarbeit, welche sich vor dreißig Jahren daselbst mit den Brüdern angefangen [...] Er machte allen Einwohnern des Orts Gelegenheit, Sonntags in seinem Hause ihn zu hören; und hielt ihnen sehr herzliche und gesegnete Reden. Diese Versammlungen wurden so heftig besucht, daß der Saal die Zuhörer nicht fassen konnte; und sie kamen nicht aus Neubegierde, sondern mit einem nach dem Evangelio hungrigen Herzen [...] Er bediente sich übrigens darinn solcher Worte und Ausdrükke, die seinen Zuhörern recht verständlich und faßlich waren" (Spangenberg, Leben Zinzendorfs 2043f.). - Besonders interessant die nachgebundene Dankrede an seine weltliche Untertanen anläßlich der Beerdigungs-Feierlichkeiten für seine am 19.07.1756 verstorbene Frau Erdmuthe Dorothea, die Zinzendorfs Gut Berthelsdorf verwaltet hatte. Die Rede zeigt Zinzendorf in seiner aristokratisch-weltlichen Rolle, nicht frei von paternalistischem Selbstbewußtsein, und enthält deutliche Worte: "Da mir vor fünf und dreißig Jahre gehuldiget wurde, so ist meine absicht nicht gleich auf führung des Regiments gegangen. Meine selige Groß-frau-mutter, die eure Herrschaft gewesen war, lebte noch, und ich konte mich darauf verlassen, solang sie in der welt war, des regiments überhoben zu seyn [...] Das Regiment über solche leibeigene unterthanen, die, wenn man sie auch los geben wolte, vielleicht nicht los möchten, ist eine schwere, verwikkelte und unangenehme sache, und von der art, daß man weder gutes, noch gut gemeintes thun kan, wie man will. Ich kan sagen, daß die bemühungen, die ich mir die ersten jahre gegeben habe, euch allenfalls nur im leiblichen glücklich zu machen, nicht die rechten gewesen sind. Man lernt eben immer, und ich glaube, daß ihr euch itzo besser befindet, da es nicht mehr so gar freygebig zugeht". - Zinzendorf stellt den Untertanen die Tochter Benigna Justine, verheiratet mit seinem engen Vertrauten Johannes von Watteville, als Nachfolgerin an die Spitze. Watteville besitze "neben seiner andern wissenschaft, auch eine erkenntnis von allen grossen und kleinen umständen eines Bauren, Gärtners und Häuslers" und werde, "wenn ihr ihm etwas vortraget, und von ihm verlanget, euch gleich mit aufrichtigkeit und herzlichkeit sagen können, ob euch selber damit gedient ist, oder nicht [...] Ob er nicht mit unter, auch eure seelen meinen, und deren bestes suchen wird, das will ich nicht in abrede seyn; aber ins leibliche wird er das nicht mengen, und eure seelen mit wohlthaten nicht erkauffen denken. Daraus entstehen unordnungen, die wir kennen". - Das Buch sollte "auch der Außenwelt den schönen Zusammenklang des evangelisch-lutherischen Kirchspiels Bertholdsdorf innerhalb der Sächsischen Landeskirche und der selbständigen, in enger Nachbarschaft mit ihr lebenden Gemeinde Herrnhut, die der Brüder-Unität angehörte, beweisen" (Erich Beyreuther). - Etwas berieben, oberes Kapital mit kleiner Fehlstelle. ‎Chicago: A Century of Progress 1933. Presumed First Edition First printing. Wraps. Fair. 194 pages. Illustrations a few in color. Format is approximately 5.75 inches by 9 25 inches. Folding map. Cover has some wear soiling tears and chips. Corners of some pages creased. A Century of Progress International Exposition was a World's Fair registered under the Bureau International des Expositions BIE which was held in Chicago as The Chicago World's Fair from 1933 to 1934 to celebrate the city's centennial. The theme of the fair was technological innovation. The fair's motto was "Science Finds Industry Applies Man Adapts". Its architectural symbol was the Sky Ride a transporter bridge perpendicular to the shore on which one could ride from one side of the fair to the other. One description of the fair noted that the world "then still mired in the malaise of the Great Depression could glimpse a happier not-too-distant future all driven by innovation in science and technology." Visitors saw the latest wonders in rail travel automobiles architecture and robots. The fair buildings were multi-colored to create a "Rainbow City" as opposed to the "White City" of the World's Columbian Exposition. The buildings generally followed Moderne architecture in contrast to the neoclassical themes used at the 1893 fair. One famous feature of the fair were the performances of fan dancer Sally Rand. Other popular exhibits were the various auto manufacturers the Midway filled with nightclubs such as the Old Morocco where future stars Judy Garland The Cook Family Singers and The Andrews Sisters performed and a recreation of important scenes from Chicago's history. One interesting and enduring exhibit was the 1933 Homes of Tomorrow Exhibition that demonstrated modern home convenience and creative practical new building materials and techniques with twelve model homes sponsored by several corporations affiliated with home decor and construction. Original paste paper boards covered in red and green block-printed patterned paper. In a modern red cloth folding box. Frontispiece engraving of the arms of bride and groom engraved allegorical vignettes on title page and at end woodcut head- and tailpieces and foliated initials all done with considerable charm. Spine and head edge just slightly faded a couple of very small snags in backstrip one page with mild thumbing but A SUPERB COPY EXCEPTIONALLY CLEAN FRESH AND BRIGHT both the text and original printed paper wrappers in an almost unbelievable state of preservation. This is a remarkably well-preserved Italian "wedding book" a souvenir produced for friends and guests of a noble bride and groom. It contains a collection of romantic poems by 28 different authors along with engravings of the newlyweds' arms. This kind of book was popular in Italy particularly in the north during the second half of the 18th and early part of the 19th centuries. Such occasional works were produced by printers in the major cities like Venice Vicenza Padua Trento and Milan for assorted noble patrons. Copies of these f�te books are to be found today in Italian and Swiss libraries but only two copies of any such volumes are held in North America one by the New York Public Library and one by the Getty. KVK locates four copies of our work one of them damaged in three Italian libraries. The groom here Count Lodovico Tiene or Thiene was a scion of one of Vicenza's most important families. His ancestor also named Lodovico built the Palazzo Thiene that was memorably remodelled by Vicenza's most famous son Andrea Palladio. Our volume was obviously a treasured keepsake that was carefully stored away from light and dust and it looks amazingly like it must have on the day of the happy nuptials. per Gio. ‎On 26 February 1622, in Paris, Rubens entered into a contractual agreement to execute two series of paintings, ?by his own hand?, intended to decorate the two parallel galleries of the Parisian palace ? the so-called Luxembourg Palace ? of Maria de? Medici, widow of Henri IV and mother of Louis XIII. Completed in 1625, the twenty-four monumental paintings of the western gallery exalting the life of the Queen Mother form a universally admired ensemble, on display at the Musee du Louvre for the last two centuries. However, the second part of this grand project, envisioned for the eastern gallery of the palace, was abandoned in 1630. The suspension and then premature termination of the project after the Queen Mother?s exile in July 1631 have deprived us of a work that would have been unique, both in its magnitude and in the artistic means Rubens deployed to glorify the royal couple. The Galerie Henri IV, planned as a commemoration of the king?s military victories and a celebration of his triumphs ?in the manner of the triumphs of the Romans? (as the contract has it), remains a puzzle whose missing pieces are more numerous than what is preserved. Still, some fifteen works ? preparatory oil-sketches on panel and large canvases, more or less completed ? have survived. It is above all through the study of these works that this volume aims to arrive at a better understanding of the context, the iconography, and the political significance of the Galerie Henri IV. Despite the frustration (for us, as for Rubens himself) of its abandonment, the unfinished project remains an extraordinary feat of Baroque encomium, and one of the artist?s greatest masterpieces.‎
