When held to light beneath the author's signature another is visible on the lower paper which appears to be Robert Robinson. William Cullen Bryant 1794-1878 American poet and journalist. ".An attentive listener inquisitive well informed shrewd in professional mattersdid not conform to any of the stereotypes of the "poet" of his day.In 1843 Bryant purchased property on Long Island New York at Roslyn where he was not only free to write but also able to pursue his botanical interests planting and nurturing specimens of trees and shrubs from around the world. The house and grounds of Roslyn have been preserved." Albert F. McLean in the ANB Paper is approx. 1 3/4" x 4 1/2" size written finely in black ink. with An engraved portrait of William Cullen Bryant by W. The Brownstorner website has an interesting history of the hotel part of which notes that ".The first Clarendon Hotel stood on the corner of Johnson and Washington Streets across from the Central Post Office building. It was damaged in the horrific fire that burned down the Brooklyn Theater next door to the hotel. That fire in 1876 killed over 300 people and was the worst disaster in Brooklyn history."
