‎Ernestine von Auer, Tochter des königlichen-bayerischen Leibarztes und Universitätsprofessors Heinrich Ritter von Breslau, war verheiratet mit dem Gutsbesitzer und Abgeordneten des bayerischen Landtags für den Wahlkreis Wasserburg/Oberbayern Maximilian von Auer (1821-1881). Sie lebte mit ihrem Mann auf Schloß Aufhausen. Befreundet war sie mit der Familie von Walter Freiherr von Grainger, die in der Nähe auf Schloß Heiligblut in Erding lebte und das Treffpunkt des bayerischen und europäischen (Hoch-)Adels war. Überliefert sind von ihr Tagebücher von 1860-1873, die über ihre gesellschaftlichen Kontakte Auskunft geben. Nach dem Tod ihres Mannes, aus der Ehe gingen zwei Kinder hervor, verkaufte sie 1883 das Schloß an Robert von Froelich.‎

November 354 in Tagaste, auch: Thagaste, in Numidien, heute Souk Ahras in Algerien; ? 28. August 430 in Hippo Regius in Numidien, heute Annaba in Algerien) war ein numidischer Kirchenlehrer. Er war neben Hieronymus, Ambrosius von Mailand und Papst Gregor dem Großen einer der vier lateinischen Kirchenväter der Spätantike und ein wichtiger Philosoph an der Schwelle zwischen Antike und Frühmittelalter. Augustinus war zunächst Rhetor in Thagaste, Karthago, Rom und Mailand. Nachdem er jahrelang Manichäer gewesen war, ließ er sich unter dem Einfluss der Predigten des Bischofs Ambrosius von Mailand im Jahr 387 christlich taufen; von 395 bis zu seinem Tod 430 war er Bischof von Hippo Regius. Sein Gedenktag in der Liturgie ist der 28. August. Augustinus hat zahlreiche theologische Schriften verfasst, die zu einem großen Teil erhalten sind. Diese Schriften, wiewohl nicht frei von Widersprüchen, bilden für Augustinus eine Einheit; der christliche Glaube ist ihm Grundlage der Erkenntnis (crede, ut intelligas: ?glaube, damit du erkennst?). Das Werk Bekenntnisse (Confessiones) gehört zu den einflussreichsten autobiographischen Texten der Weltliteratur. Augustinus? Philosophie enthält von Platon stammende, jedoch im christlichen Sinn modifizierte Elemente. Hierzu gehören insbesondere die Dreiteilung der Wirklichkeit in die Welt des höchsten Seins, die nur dem Geist zugänglich ist, die Geist-Seele des Menschen und die niedere Welt des Werdens, die den Sinnen zugänglich ist. Die erste Biografie des Augustinus stammt von Possidius von Calama, der ihn als Schüler noch gut gekannt hat. Als einer der einflussreichsten Theologen und Philosophen der christlichen Spätantike bzw. der Patristik hat er das Denken des Abendlandes wesentlich geprägt. In der orthodoxen Kirche dagegen blieb er praktisch unbekannt; als seine Lehre im 14. Jahrhundert durch griechische Übersetzungen auch in Konstantinopel bekannt wurde, stieß sie auf Ablehnung, soweit sie nicht ohnehin dem Konsens anderer Kirchenväter entsprach. Seine Theologie beeinflusste die Lehre fast aller westlichen Kirchen, ob katholisch oder evangelisch. Chapman's masterly edition of the novels was first published in a limited edition of five volumes in 1923. It was the first based on carefully collated texts and the first to feature illustrations from contemporary sources. Demand far outstripped the limited audience and a 'second edition' (in reality a second printing on cheaper stock) was issued in 1926. A 'third edition' (as here) was published in 1933, but since it is produced from the original plates it is still technically a third printing. This third edition, several times re-issued, preserves the three-volume structure of the first edition of 1816, adding frontispieces to each volume together with the other plates and facsimiles, and Chapman's extensive notes and explanatory articles.
