Lord WellingtonMay 1813.<br /> In 1812 two mighty armies manoeuvered across the Spanish plains. They were finely balancedunder skilful leaders. Each struggled to gain an advantage.Wellington knew that if he defeated the Frenchhe could turn the tide of the war.Good intelligence was paramountbut the French were using a code of unrivalled complexity - the 'Great Paris Cipher'.It was a daunting challengeand Wellington looked to one man to break the code: Major George Scovell.<br /> In this compelling account of the officer who waged the intelligence battle against Napoleon's armyMark Urban shows Scovell to be a forerunner to the great code-breakers of the 20thC.Using a network of Spanish guerillasScovell amassed a stack of coded French messagesand set to work decrypting them. But as a man of low birthScovell - even with his genius for languagesand bravery on a dozen battlefields - struggled for advancement amongst Wellington's inner circle of richerbetter connected officers.Mark Urban draws on a wealth of original sources including many ciphers and code-tablesto restore Scovell to his rightful place in history.<br />Since April 2013 and again in March 2015and in this year toothe UK Post Office has altered it's Pricing in Proportion templatealtering it's pricesweight allowancesdimensions and lowered it's qualifying compensation rates too!<br />Soplease contact rpaxtonden@blueyonder.co.ukbecause of the weight/value of this item for correctinsured shipping/Pp quotes - particularly ALL overseas buyers - BEFORE ordering through the order page!</p> LONDON.FABER & FABER LIMITED,2001. hardcover

Sir Richard Grenville was one of the most interesting military figures of his age.Hero of the siege of Plymouth and of the battle of Lostwithielthe last great Royalist victoryhe had deserted Parliament to become one of the most foremost Royalist leaders in the West. He came from a noted West Country family and was the grandson of the national heroSir Richard Grenville of 'The Revenge'.In ruthless determination and fighting spirit it was he whom Richard resembled most closely. As a professional soldier he served in GermanySpainFranceScotland and Ireland. The study of his career throws light on many aspects of both military and political history and following the victory at Lostwithiel offers fresh insight into the reasons for the decline of the Royalist cause. After the Civil War he spent many years in exile intriguing for the recovery of his fortunes and the restoration of Charles II. Grenville's life was profoundly influenced by marriage to a strong-willed woman who brought imprisonment and financial ruin upon him.His bitterness over this experience helps to explain the vindictiveness which he displayed during the Civil War.Yet he possessed qualities that aroused admiration and loyalty from many people and throughout life he remained a controversial personality who provoked sharply conflicting opinions from his contemporaries.Based on a wide range of sourcesthis first detailed biography of Grenville provides a penetrating study of his complex character. The book will be welcomed by students of the Civil War everywhere and especially by those in the Westwhere the memory of his exploits is still fresh. It is also a valuable contribution to 17thC history andas a well-researched and well-written account of a strong character in the heroic mouldit is a biography that will appeal to many general readers with no special interest in that century or its great conflict.
