Edition originale française du récit paru en 1816 en Angleterre. Huit lettres, les cinq premières écrites à bord du Northumberland, les trois dernières à Sainte-Hélène. Le médecin partage visiblement le point de vue anglais le plus hostile à l'Empereur déchu. Bien que les rapports entre Warden et Napoléon soient courtois, la réserve non exempte de méfiance semble de mise entre eux. L'essentiel des conversations rapportées porte sur la situation en France et le sort réservé à Napoléon par les Anglais. Une controverse ne cesse d'opposer les deux hommes sur les méthodes médicales employées en Angleterre et en France.

First American Edition, 12mo, half-title, engraved frontispiece, folding plate, some foxing of the text in places, ix, [2], 12-244 pp., original printed boards, uncut, hinges partly cracked, pieces of the backstrip missing at head and tail, a good copy. Warden (1777-1849) was the surgeon on board the Northumberland, and this volume of Saint Helena reminiscences describes his time on Saint Helena and his frequent visits to Longwood House, Napoleon's exile home. Disapproved of by both the pro- and anti-Napoleonic camps, the work was savaged notably in the anti-Napoleonic "Querterly Review". Amongst the French contingent on Saint Helena, there was much discussion in the spring of 1817, regarding Warden's work, as to and how to reply. A reply was made in the end, first in English and later in French, in the form of the book published anonymously under the title, "Letters from the Cape of Good Hope, in reply to Mr. Warden;......", London, 1817. As to the identity of the anonymous author, many suspected it to be Napoleon, but the letters appear to have been written by Las Cases, (who was at the Cape after being banished from Saint Helena in December 1816), and sent to Lady Clavering ('Lady C.' in the book).

August 1815 begab sich Napoleon mit seinem Gefolge an Bord der Northumberland, die am 18. Oktober des Jahres ihr Bestimmungsziel erreichte. Auf St. Helena wurde Bonaparte und seinen wenigen Begleitern der Wohnsitz des Gouverneurs (Longwood House) zugewiesen, wo der ehemalige Kaiser die Illusion eines Hofstaates aufrechzuerhalten versuchte. Napoleon arbeitete in den Folgejahren an seinen Memoiren; zunehmend durch Krankheit geschwächt, starb er am 5. Mai 1821. Die hier vorliegenden Aufzeichnungen des Napoleon begleitenden Arztes William Warden gewähren einen intimen Einblick in die Lebensverhältnisse Napoleons in diesen letzten Jahren.

Tod-Mercer and dated 1896. 8vo in a beautiful Zaehnsdorf signed binding dated 1896 thus no doubt custom made for the presentation to George E. Mercer. The binding is of full crushed scarlet morocco richly adorned in fine late-Victorian style. The boards feature a wide frame of gilt vines flowers and thistles which is further ruled in gilt then further surrounded by minutely detailed gilt rolling the upper boards also lettered “Mercer’s Waterloo†in fine gilt stamping the smooth rounded spines with gilt lettering with a gilt oval surrounded by more gilt vines and flowers which then grow both up and below to fully frame the spine panel board edges gilt ruled wide turn-ins gilt tooled in the same motif as the covers silk endpapers with powder blue moire pattern and further gilt tooling complete this beautiful presentation a.e.g. xii 369; viii 347 pp. An extraordinary set the condition remains outstanding. The text-block is essentially pristine the fine bindings show only the most minimal evidence of age. Truly and outstanding and unique copy. Mercer's ‘Journal’ is an important source for historians of the Waterloo campaign as well as a detailed description of the landscape and people of Belgium and France in the early 19th century. It is one of the few accounts of the period written by an artillery officer. Mercer’s journals were kept throughout the campaign of 1815 but were not published until 1870 after his death. The work was compiled and written in its finished form some 30 years earlier from the original notes Mercer wrote contemporaneously with additions and verifications from correspondence and other sources. It covers the period from April 1815 to January 1816. Although he eventually rose to the rank of general his fame is as commander of the British G Troop Royal Horse Artillery in the thick of the fighting at the Battle of Waterloo. It is also notable for its lengthy descriptions of the countryside and its people.<br> In spite of his position with the British Army the work is usually found in 20th Century editions in French.
