Nouvelle traduction, donnée par Félix Mornand, de cet ouvrage publié en anglais à Boston en 1836 sous le titre 'The slave; or, Memoirs of Archy Moore'. Historien, journaliste et économiste, très critique vis-à-vis de la société américaine de son temps, l'auteur milita très tôt et tout au long de sa vie pour l'abolition. Composé après un séjour forcé dans le sud des États-Unis, cette oeuvre est considérée comme le premier roman anti-esclavagiste américain et l'une des sources principales de 'La Case de l'oncle Tom'.
