Texas, Negro Legislators
Negro Legislators of Texas 1935 First Edition
1935. BREWER John Mason. Negro Legislators of Texas. Dallas: Mathis Publishing Co. 1935. 134 pages with five photographic plates. Original green cloth binding gilt titles on spine and front cover. Has an ownership inscription of a "W.H. Burnett Terrell Texas" on front pastedown. J. Mason Brewer’s Negro Legislators of Texas and Their Descendants is a foundational work in Texas African American history documenting the lives and contributions of Black legislators during Reconstruction and their descendants. Brewer a trailblazing historian and folklorist was the first African American member of the Texas Folklore Society and an influential figure in chronicling African American heritage. This volume presents biographical sketches of African American legislators detailing their participation in state government during a tumultuous period in Texas history. Brewer contextualizes the rise and fall of Black political power tracing the transition from Reconstruction to the widespread disenfranchisement of African Americans. The photographic plates provide rare visual documentation including portraits of legislators their families and significant community figures. One plate also has a state map with counties represented by Negro legislators. A hallmark of Black political history for the region Brewer’s work preserves the stories of those Black men who represented their communities and exercised political power during a period of widespread discrimination. Spine ends bumped some fading and rubbing to gilt. Some scuffing and discoloration to boards. Text block firm with minor toning. Very good condition. unknown
