Questo studio nasce da un'esperienza composita che può essere così schematizzata: colloqui con i pescatori di alcune località costiere del Cilento alla ricerca di canti popolari di tema marinaresco - ricerca sul campo condotta per dieci anni in trenta località del Cilento collinare incontrando centinaia di persone che hanno fornito un complesso di circa mille testi di canto popolare profano del tipo Ottava Siciliana confluiti in una raccolta inedita che comprende materiale sonoro e cartaceo. Un testo unico nel suo genere premiato dal CNR come miglior saggio sull'argomento. Si tratta di copie manoscritte autografe e di schede corredate dei dati anagrafici contenenti i testi provenienti dalla lenta dettatura di persone anziane. Inoltre sono stati consultati moltissimi testi di numerose biblioteche. Quelli non trovati sono stati ricercati in altre province meridionali. Nell'ulteriore fase di lavoro è stato compilato e pubblicato uno studio di analisi comparata tra i testi provenienti dalla citata raccolta inedita e quelli contenuti in svariate raccolte ottocentesche. Successivamente la comparazione si è estesa alle sillogi pubblicate nel Cilento in tempi recenti. Lo scopo fondamentale di questo studio è quello di confrontare le variazioni di tipo strutturale nell'intento di ricostruire le ottave che sembrano irregolari nell'andamento metrico oppure quelle contenenti versi o quartine che per contenuto e struttura sembrano provenire da altro componimento. Il libro propriamente detto è strutturato nel seguente modo: nelle pagine pari sono trascritte 401 ottave distribuite in 82 gruppi. Ciascun gruppo comprende da un minimo di due canti a un massimo di tredici; ogni canto è preceduto da un numero progressivo, dal nome dell'autore di ciascuna raccolta di provenienza, dall'abbreviazione della raccolta stessa e dall'indicazione della pagina in riferimento all'edizione esaminata. Nelle pagine dispari sono riportate 82 schede relative agli 82 gruppi di canti: ciascuna scheda è numerata in modo progressivo, riporta il numero del gruppo di riferimento, le caratteristiche del gruppo esaminato, l'eventuale suddivisione del gruppo in sottogruppi. Sono segnalati versi che ricorrono in canti di altro argomenti facenti parte di altri gruppi e sono evidenziate eventuali incongruenze che si palesano solo a seguito di una dettagliata analisi comparata. Maria Savi-Lopez (1846-1940), complessa figura di studiosa di folklore, sull’onda dell’interesse e della tensione ottocentesca per le manifestazioni della cultura popolare, unì sul finire dell’Ottocento tutte le leggende d’ambito alpino. Nata a Napoli e vissuta sin da giovanissima in Piemonte, fu appassionata cultrice delle testimonianze della fantasia popolare, recuperando per i lettori storie e racconti appartenenti alla narrativa tradizionale. Tra le oltre sue quaranta opere si segnalano: Leggende delle Alpi (1886), Leggende del mare (1894) e Nani e folletti (1900), tutti pubblicati da Edizioni Intra. Autori: Maria Savi Lopez.
