br. Chi è il gagà? Cosa fa il gagà? Tutti ne parlano, tutti ne hanno visto almeno uno. C'è chi ha uno zio celibe e sempre troppo elegante che in famiglia tutti chiamano gagà, o c'è chi si ricorda del nonno, sposatosi ben sei volte, con la sua tremenda collezione di cravatte dipinte a mano. Il gagà è sempre stato un personaggio nostrano: da Milano a Palermo, passando per Roma e, soprattutto, per Napoli, ha divertito o infastidito generazioni di italiani coi suoi baffetti a punta, l'aria blasé, il monocolo, la giacchetta corta e le ghette dai colori improbabili. Questo saggio si propone di tracciare una storia del gagà, ingiustamente dimenticato da troppo tempo: si parlerà di proto-gagà alla corte di Versailles, di gagà contro i dandy dell'Inghilterra vittoriana, di gagà futuristi, e di gagà un po' fascisti.

L'Italia dell'ottocento costituiva un luogo piacevole di visita per i turisti stranieri, ma e' indubbio che si trovava ancora parecchio indietro rispetto alla maggior parte degli Stati Europei come appunto la Francia. Il libro analizza istituzioni culturali, personaggi e intellettuali italiani dell'epoca cercando di rispondere alla domanda un po' maliziosa del titolo. Interessanti i profili di Leopardi, Garibaldi e Mazzini, Gioberti, Guerrazzi, Giusti.
