A type index of Chinese folktales: In the oral tradition and major works of non-religious classical literature (FF Communications No. 223). Nai-Tung Ting's work on the Chinese folktale provides an interesting example in this regard. At a cursory investigation, the work appears to have been done impeccably. It is bearing testimony to the high level of scholarly asceticism that has characterized so many of those who have fallen under the shadow of the Finnish Academy. The indexing system is efficiently laid out and easy to use. It lends itself readily to eventual computerization and will undoubtedly save all the research headaches and frustrations it has been arranged to. For this it merits the highest praise, as also for the actual amount of material that the author has gathered up and sifted through for us. The bibliography runs to well over 700 entries, many of them sizable volumes or collections running to several volumes. It is composed almost entirely of twentieth century editions up until 1973. Given the breadth and depth of the nation with the world's largest population, and probably also the largest active folk tradition, we have reason to be grateful for efforts such as this. (In a nice flourish of conscientious apologetics, the author even informs us that one particular source had to be skimmed through quickly because the poor quality of the copy hurt his eyes!)

Tanglewood Tales was written by Nathaniel Hawthorne with this edition superbly illustrated by Edmund Dulac who was one of the Golden Age Illustrators. Tanglewood Tales is a first edition book published by Hodder and Stoughton in November 1918 and comes complete with 14 Edmund Dulac colour illustrations. This first edition of Edmund Dulac Tanglewood Tales completely conforms to Ann Conolly Hughey�s book Edmund Dulac His Book Illustrations in which this book is bound in a tan cloth with a special design by Edmund Dulac comprising of rust and orange images taken from the illustrated front endpapers and rear endpapers. �To the front board you are able to see Edmund Dulac�s printed initials to the bottom right corner. The binding measures 9.00 x 11.00 inches and are extremely attractive and impressive. �However as with a book of this age they do have some minor faults which are corner knocks slight crinkling to the cloth to the bottom right hand corner of the front board slight wear to the top and bottom of the spine slight darkening of the spine light marks to the plain back board and slight wear to the edge of the back board. �These faults are minimal and consistent with this vintage Edmund Dulac book that is in excess of 90 years old. �The Edmund Dulac Tanglewood Tales binding is in Very Good condition and is exceptionally attractive. Tanglewood Tales has 244 numbered pages with 14 tipped-in wonderful colour plates by Edmund Dulac. The Edmund Dulac tipped-in colour illustration plates are in Fine condition being mounted on grey paper and are bordered with one thick and one thin green line. The pages are exceptionally clean slight browning to the front endpapers; very light and minimal spotting and a very light wave that goes through the pages of the book which are barely noticeable and only mentioned for completeness. <br/><br/>ED041 Hodder & Stoughton unknown

Questa sensazione di sicurezza e di appagamento ci conduce al concetto di Grande Madre. La Grande Madre è la Terra, la Natura, la combinazione armonica e non cruenta degli elementi che la compongono. L'accostamento primario è con la Donna e poi dalla donna quello con la Luna e il suo ciclo. Concetti che un tempo governavano il mondo conosciuto e trovavano rispondenze in ciò che lo circondava. Poi arrivarono le guerre, i rituali di sangue e l'armonia si ruppe, ma restò il ricordo dell'epoca d'oro in scrittori come Esiodo o Virgilio che la tramandarono. Questo saggio ricerca e ci svela la concatenazione degli eventi, le mitologie nelle varie parti del mondo e come avviene il trasformarsi del loro ricordo. Il viaggio ci condurrà alla conoscenza dei graffiti nelle caverne, delle statue, degli animali che rappresentavano la Dea, dei rituali fino alle trasformazioni della Dea nelle varie epoche del mondo. Incontreremo gli astri, lo "Hieros gamos", i simboli e tutto ciò che entra nella sfera dell'evoluzione.

Superstizione. Tra malasorte, ragione, sorte e paura

Partendo da questo concetto, l'autrice cerca di vagliare le cause per cui, sin dalla nascita dell'uomo, alcuni colori, pietre, piante, parole, azioni siano oggetto di credenze popolari che li caricano di potenza negativa o positiva. Credenze che cambiano da popolo a popolo e di secolo in secolo, perché la superstizione non è un elemento stabile e concreto, ma una "variabile", diremmo in termini algebrici, che si adatta alle esigenze ed alle mentalità di un'epoca. Quindi per capire le origini di determinati atti che ripetiamo ancora oggi senza averne più memoria storica, come gettare una moneta in una fontana o non passare sotto una scala o, per gli ebrei, mettere un sassolino sulla tomba dei propri cari, l'autrice si è dedicata alla ricerca delle azioni che li hanno generati dall'inizio della storia dell'uomo. L'opera suscita l'interesse del curioso, ma coinvolge ed appassiona il lettore offrendo un panorama completo sulla superstizione in Occidente non disdegnando, all'occasione, di presentarsi come un vero manuale pratico e come tale anche consultabile nei singoli capitoli.
