Una passeggiata a Piazzetta Nilo, cuore del centro antico di Napoli, riporta in mente all'autore, Marco Perillo, la presenza di una bottega di un robivecchi all'esterno della quale campeggiava la figura in cartapesta di una Vecchia Carnevale, antica maschera della tradizione folklorica campana. Da lì, dal ricordo della paura che da bambino gli suscitava quel fantoccio, il filo della memoria inizia a dipanarsi e quei vicoli ora costellati "di ristorantini e di B&B" e in cui "gli abitanti sembrano essere tutti stranieri" si riempiono di nuovo di un'"umanità ormai scomparsa": Fortunato e i suoi panini, la mamma di Pino Daniele, Nennella l'acquafrescaia... Queste figure sono rievocate da Perillo sullo sfondo di eventi della vita collettiva (il terremoto del 1980, lo scudetto del 1987) che si intrecciano con quelli della vita familiare (un trasloco, l'ingiusto arresto del padre, il tormento causato da vicine "streghe"). Il racconto però non si esaurisce nel tributo al passato, ma consente all'autore di affermare la consapevolezza di essere cambiato, di non scappare più di fronte a ciò che un tempo lo spaventava. Con due foto fuori testo applicate su cartoncino di Sergio Siano e Marco Maraviglia.

br. Lungo i Pirenei ha abitato per secoli un misterioso gruppo di persone, spesso colpite da terribili persecuzioni. Conosciute come Cagots, la loro origine resta tuttora ignota. Le fonti medievali ne parlano come di «costruttori», carpentieri, tagliatori di pietre e fabbri. È certo che si tendeva a isolarle e a trattarle come degli «intoccabili», rendendole oggetto di disprezzo e intolleranza. Ma costituirono anche materia di studio per i medici di corte del re Enrico IV di Navarra. Come segno d'infamia dovevano portare cucita sul petto, o sulla spalla destra, una zampa d'oca dipinta in rosso e in testa un berretto tipico delle confraternite e degli iniziati. I piedi dovevano essere ben avvolti in calzature che ne nascondessero la presunta deformità: si raccontava infatti che avessero gli arti inferiori palmati, una caratteristica che li faceva identificare nella religione basca come i figli delle Lamie. Quale segreto nasconde questa «razza maledetta»?
