ill., br. Annacare/annacarsi è in dialetto siciliano un verbo insidioso, difficilmente traducibile in italiano. Quel che più si avvicina è cullare/cullarsi, ma non è proprio la stessa cosa. L'arte di annacarsi prevede il muoversi il massimo per spostarsi il minimo. Una immagine che descrive bene lo spirito dell'isola e più ancora la disposizione d'animo dei siciliani tessuta di diffidenza. Ogni viaggio in Sicilia, anche quello intrapreso in questo libro, diventa una specie di danza immobile attorno alla geografia e alla filosofia, alla storia, al folklore e alla gastronomia, scoprendo che fra le diverse discipline esistono continui rimandi a una trama inestricabile. "Pur restando immobile, l'Isola si muove. Non è uno di quei posti dove si va a cercare la conferma delle proprie conoscenze. È invece un teatro dove le cose succedono da un momento all'altro. È un susseguirsi di scatti prolungati, pause per rifiatare e ancora fughe in avanti". Come l'Isola, Alajmo procede a zig-zag in un itinerario non lineare, senza vincoli di percorso né di tempo, da un capo all'altro, sulla base di pure suggestioni, guidato dalla bellezza, accompagnato da un lucido pessimismo. Come un atto d'amore che non si nasconde nessuna vergogna dell'oggetto amato: capita di innamorarsi di una canaglia. E anche se lo sai, che puoi farci?

Le Coq was a Prussian / German brewery owner and wine merchant, who at the age of 40 began to study archaeology. Aided by his wealth, von Le Coq became a famous archaeologist and explorer of Central Asia. Von Le Coq was convinced that the influence of Ancient Greece could be found as far in the east as China. However, organising expeditions to Central Asia and China was beyond his means. The German archaeologist Hermann Parzinger has found a letter in the Prussian State Archive which reveals that the financial backing to von Le Coq's expedition came from no one else than the last German emperor Wilhelm II. Wilhelm was obsessed with Greek culture and supported one of the expeditions with 32,000 German gold marks. Von Le Coq was associated with the Museum für Völkerkunde (now called the Ethnological Museum of Berlin) in Berlin. Serving as assistant to the head of the Museum, Professor Albert Grünwedel, Le Coq helped plan and organize expeditions into the regions of western Asia, specifically areas near the Silk Road such as Gaochang. When Grünwedel fell ill before the departure of the second expedition, Le Coq was assigned to lead it. His account of the second and third German Turpan expeditions was published in English in 1928 as Buried Treasures of Chinese Turkestan. The expeditions found extensive networks of Buddhist and Manichaean cave temples in the Xinjiang region of Northwest China. Although many of the manuscripts found in the cave were destroyed during the excavation, von Le Coq speculated that he had discovered a major Manichaean library. Some of the paintings also led him to believe that he had found evidence of an Aryan culture, related to the Franks. With the help of his assistants, Theodor Bartus, Le Coq carved and sawed away over 360 kilograms (or 305 cases) of artifacts, wall-carvings, and precious icons, which were subsequently shipped to the museum. In Buried Treasures ..., Le Coq defends these "borrowings" as a matter of necessity, citing the turbulent nature of Chinese Turkestan at the time of the expeditions. Chinese consider this seizure a "colonial rapacity" comparable to the taking of the Elgin Marbles or the Koh-i-Noor diamond. The artifacts were put on display at the museum and were open to the public until 1944 when the relics were destroyed in a British bombing raid during World War II. Among the stories surrounding the legendary foundation of the city of Rome by the twins Romulus and Remus previous scholarly attention has focused primarily on one scene � the depiction of the she-wolf nursing the twins following their miraculous salvation from the floodwaters of the Tiber. This book examines another event in the cycle the conception of the twins in which the Vestal Virgin Rhea Silvia is visited in her sleep and raped by the god Mars. Some fifty-one examples of the encounter of Mars and Rhea Silvia are analyzed drawn from coins relief sculpture gems wall painting mosaics and pottery covering a time frame from the motif�s origin in the early 1st century B. C. To its disappearance in the late 4th century A. D. An analysis of the scene's iconographical evolution and its documented periods of popularity both in the public and private sphere are associated with contemporary trends in Roman literature religion and art. This monograph on the representation of Mars and Rhea Silvia is not simply a self-contained study of a single motif over a specific time frame. Within the realm of Roman art the book discusses larger issues concerning the relationship between art myth and religion and political propaganda drawing from methodologies of appropriation Kopienkritik word and image semiotics and memory culture.
