Il mito è il racconto sorgivo sulla nascita della vita, del pensiero e del mondo, che si esprime nella parola e nel silenzio, nell'arte e nella preghiera, nel gioco, nel canto e nella poesia elementare della vita. Non è verità né illusione, abita su un altro piano: è ordine nella bellezza. Sul mito si fondano la storia, la politica, perfino il cinema e la pubblicità; mitico è l'amore e così l'infanzia. Quando però i miti sono negati, crescono al loro posto idoli e surrogati, come quelli che ci circondano oggi. In questo libro Marcello Veneziani si propone di recuperare la dimensione autentica del mito per porlo al centro dell'esistenza e rispondere così a un desiderio profondo e diffuso di «vita superiore». Dopo la disfatta di religione e filosofia, per compensare lo strapotere della scienza e contendere la sovranità alla tecnica e alla finanza, non resta che affidarsi al «mitopensiero». Senza miti, infatti, la vita non è affatto più libera, più autonoma, più razionale; solo più povera, più insensata, più labile. All'uomo di oggi - scrive Veneziani - «il mito non offre profitti ma fondamenti, non assicura vantaggi ma significati. Dona bellezza, irraggia gli eventi e illumina i volti».
