‎ill., br. Partendo dalla famosa frase di Pier Capponi, "noi suoneremo le nostre campane", Giorgio Batini propone un appassionante excursus sulla storia dei campanili e dei bronzi della Toscana. Tra i numerosi racconti citiamo quello sul bronzo inviato al confino con un vero e proprio decreto (la "Piagnona" del Savonarola), quello della "Smarrita" che indicava la via giusta ai pellegrini sulla via Francigena, quello della "Martinella" che i senesi conquistarono ai fiorentini nella battaglia di Montaperti e non resero più alla città nemica. Batini ci racconta anche di come nel 1148 le campane di tutte le chiese fiorentine smisero di far sentire i loro rintocchi, a causa di un interdetto lanciato da papa Eugenio III contro Firenze, colpevole di aver distrutto il castello di un feudatario che era andato in Terrasanta per partecipare alla seconda crociata indetta dallo stesso pontefice. Le chiese fiorentine restarono chiuse ai fedeli e le campane restarono mute per ben cinque anni, fino al 1153 quando l'interdetto fu tolto da Anastasio IV. Curioso anche l'episodio che nel 1307 vide protagonisti i monaci benedettini della Badia Fiorentina: anziché suonare i loro bronzi per le ore canoniche, li suonarono a martello contro le tasse imposte loro dal Comune, il quale reagì facendo abbattere il loro campanile.‎
