br. Fate, atmosfere oniriche, storie intrecciate allo scorrere delle stagioni e ai destini umani: il patrimonio di racconti tradizionali dell'antica Irlanda è straordinario sia per dimensione, sia per varietà di temi e personaggi. Tramandati oralmente per molti secoli e poi messi per iscritto dai monaci medievali, questi testi ci parlano con il linguaggio della fantasia e del mito. Gli "autori" sono coloro che, a cavallo tra fine Ottocento e inizio Novecento, hanno dato vita alla "Celtic Renaissance", ovvero alla rinascita della cultura e delle tradizioni celtico-irlandesi, in opposizione alla dominazione inglese. Le fiabe e leggende irlandesi raccolte in questo volume sono tratte dai principali cicli di racconti e comprendono sia fiabe nel senso classico del termine, sia racconti magici in cui l'elemento storico si mescola a motivi fiabeschi: il risultato è la mappa magica di un mondo popolato da giganti, folletti e streghe, giovani principi e principesse crudeli, animali parlanti, boschi incantati e acque miracolose, mantelli che catturano palle di fuoco e uova magiche. Arricchiscono il volume un saggio sulle fate a firma dell'antichista inglese Joseph Ritson, un repertorio delle raccolte di fiabe irlandesi fino a oggi pubblicate in Italia e una postfazione del curatore sull'ipotesi di un'origine genetica delle fate.

Nati con la camicia. La membrana amniotica nel folklore e nella medicina
ill., br. Nella cultura popolare di molte regioni del mondo e di diverse epoche storiche, la nascita con la "camicia", ovvero la membrana amniotica, raffigura un destino fortunato. Chi nasce con essa può infatti diventare un individuo dotato spiritualmente: uno sciamano o un prelato di alto rango, un arcivescovo cattolico o un lama nel mondo tibetano. Tale tipo di nascita conferisce inoltre dei poteri magici come la "seconda vista", nei confronti di morti e di spettri, e la chiaroveggenza. "Nati con la camicia" raccoglie tutte le credenze popolari e le ipotesi intorno a questo avvenimento partendo dalla tradizione storico-letteraria e proponendo anche quanto scritto nei secoli da fisiologi, embriologi e medici. Secondo tali credenze e tradizioni, la "camicia" può anche essere apparentata a una sorta di copricapo che ha molti legami con il mondo delle fate e degli gnomi, e che conferiva protezione e invisibilità a chi nasceva con essa. Nel folklore europeo, e non solo, la "camicia" ha rappresentato un attributo che poteva indirizzare i proprietari verso un destino di benandanti, maghi, streghe, lupi mannari e vampiri, ovvero figure inerenti alle profondità della psiche. La membrana amniotica fa parte dell'unità feto-placenta-cordone ombelicale, e a tal riguardo il saggio documenta le diverse disposizioni e prescrizioni che nel corso dei secoli hanno riguardato le parti di questa unità al fine di favorirne e utilizzarne l'influsso positivo e scongiurarne quello maligno. Del resto, nel folklore sono note le proprietà terapeutiche della "camicia" e delle cellule che da essa possono essere derivate, mentre nella medicina antica, ad esempio quella cinese, erano ben conosciute le proprietà curative della placenta. Conoscenze andate poi perdute e in seguito recuperate nella medicina moderna: oggi infatti queste stesse proprietà vengono sfruttate nella cosiddetta "medicina rigenerativa", al fine di riparare organi danneggiati, restituendo loro integrità strutturale e funzionale.

Ex-library marks consist of inkstamps to edges and to prelims; half-title page is rippled at former site of pocket. A versified tall tale put into the mouth of a voyageur - Bilingual in English and French. The English version the original is the latest example I have seen of the genre of poetry purporting to represent the Habitant dialect in English. Cook does not attempt as did William Henry Drummond who invented of the genre to reproduce the "charming" pronunciation but in the 21st century such lines as "But suddenly I wake up fast! The boat she jump and spin - " leave me simply dumbstruck with amazement. The French version is an adaptation and renders the story in prose with considerably more detail and a more literary form "Soudain je sentis mordre � l'hame�on . Le canot sautait et dansait." In any case definitely a literary curiosity as a very late example of humourous but sympathetic Habitant patois poetry in English. Fuori dalle definizioni, "Le tremende" di Romagna si sono raccontate a voce alta, sfidando luoghi comuni e stereotipi. Con la voglia di farsi apprezzare per le capacità musicali, la passione, la grinta e non perché sono piacevoli da guardare. Che in mezzo ci sia una batteria o una consolle, poco importa: la frase "suoni come un uomo" non vorrebbero mai sentirsela dire. E le loro scelte di vita, così eterogenee o a volte fuori dal comune, non vorrebbero fossero messe in discussione.
