Le "buone maniere" cominciano ad affermarsi alla fine del Medioevo, con l'avvento della società di corte, una sorta di laboratorio dove si perfezionano tecniche di autodisciplina degli impulsi spontanei - per lo più smodati e violenti - cui i liberi cavalieri medievali potevano dare incontrollata soddisfazione. Si costruiscono così quei codici di comportamento, destinati col tempo a diffondersi in tutta la società, che saranno di fondamentale importanza nello sviluppo dell'età moderna. Ma il "processo di civilizzazione" non è affatto concluso: forse i posteri troveranno rozze e sorprendenti le nostre abitudini più raffinate.
