Come tutti i simboli anche quest'uccello ha duplice aspetto: buono e cattivo. Marie-Louise von Franz utilizza in questo volume l'approccio della psicologia analitica nel tentativo di rendere accessibili all'uomo moderno le esperienze di vita che sono contenute nelle fiabe. Per esemplificare la sua proposta di lettura, la von Franz studia inizialmente un testo dei Grimm, "Le tre piume", il cui motivo dominante sta nel difficile riconoscimento dell'elemento femminile, per poi passare ad altre fiabe di vari paesi in cui si ritrovano temi che, trasposti nelle categorie junghiane, rivelano la loro ricchezza e consentono riferimenti illuminanti. In queste pagine, scritte con ammirevole chiarezza, lo stesso simbolismo degli animali, degli oggetti, dei gesti e dei numeri trova non una spiegazione meccanica, ma una carica di significati capaci di parlare alla nostra sensibilità.
