‎Erste Ausgabe der Ebeling'schen Bearbeitung von Flögels bereits 1788 erschienenen, nur 2 Tafeln aufweisenden Werkes über das "Grotesk-Komische". Ebeling hatte die Aufgabe, "das Flögelsche Werk in Einklang mit dem Geschmack und der Bildungsstufe unserer Zeit zu bringen, ohne es bis zur völligen Unkenntlichkeit umzugestalten, und den Inhalt durch das neu erwachsene Material zu erweitern, ingleichen durch die inzwischen so bedeutend fortgeschrittene Kritik zu berichtigen". Er hat die Ausgabe "umgeschaffen", gelegentlich auch gekürzt, meist aber erheblich erweitert und "selbstverständlich von ihren offenbaren Incorrectheiten und Irrthümern gesäubert". Entstanden ist so ein eigenständiges, viel reicher illustriertes (Tafeln "z.T. derb-pikant") Werk über das Grotesk-Komische in der Komödie, bei christlich-kirchlichen Festen und weltlichen Gelegenheiten, in komischen Gesellschaften, in Musik, Kunst und Mode. "Die Tafeln stellen höchst interessante Caricaturen dar: Harlekins, Nürnb(erger) Schönbartläufer, Weihnachtsspiele, ritterl(iche) Spiele, Phantasie-Grotesken, kom(ische) Initialen, Karikaturen auf die Herren- und Corsettmode, Spielkartenblätter a(us) dem 16.
