Le più recenti scoperte scientifiche e archeologiche sembrano infatti confermare la teoria «eretica» di Hancock di un cataclisma apocalittico dovuto alla collisione del nostro pianeta con una cometa alla fine dell'ultima glaciazione, che ha spazzato via «quasi» ogni traccia di una civiltà avanzata. Nel "Ritorno degli dei" Hancock identifica e documenta le tracce che dimostrano l'esistenza di questa civiltà e si pone in una prospettiva nuova riguardo all'eredità del passato. Per ricominciare siamo stati aiutati e guidati dagli «dei costruttori», la cui missione non fu soltanto quella di consegnarci il patrimonio di conoscenze con cui ricominciare, ma anche di lasciarci un messaggio: sarebbe successo ancora.
