Late Edo. 112 original full page ink and watercolour paintings unpaginated 14 x 19cm original patterned paper covered Japanese paper covers 4 hole stab binding. Occasional light water staining upper corners heavier browning lower margins near gutter little worming first and last leaves. Wrappers chipped with some occasional insect damage causing a little loss. Overall though this delightful album of paintings presents very well. This unique book of original coloured paintings shows a rich collection of over one hundred objects for traditional samurai ceremonies. They include samurai armour a battle drum horse riding gear wedding costumes and accessories ceremonial evil-spirit shooting arrows baby robes and food offerings such as birds fish and sea weeds. <br> <br>The book does not show how those objects were actually used in ceremonies but they are presented in the pictures as treasured items on ceremonial high legged trays. Judging by the style and content it appears this album was most likely made in the late Edo period to record traditional ceremonies with appropriate arrangements for a selected few. However occasional use of a term "kindai" modern era in the captions leaves some question which era it actually was. All the original illustrations are meticulously drawn and delicately coloured with some captions. The paintings with their delicate application of colour give detailed images of traditional cultural objects and bring to life the historical past of Japan. . unknown

Très bel ouvrage illustré de 35 magnifiques gravures sur bois aux couleurs éclatantes et soignées, illustrant des tenues de samouraïs. Il s'agit d'un remarquable travail détaillant la tenue traditionnelle des samouraïs japonais, réalisé par Imaizumi Sadasuke, un érudit du mouvement Kokugaku, qui mettait l'accent sur les études classiques japonaises et qui a manifestement fait des recherches sur les œuvres de Heizo Sadatake Ise, noble de la période Edo (XVIIIe siècle). Chaque planche est accompagnée d'un texte explicatif. De nombreux styles sont représentés. Les différences entre les classes sociales sont expliquées, allant des samouraïs inférieurs avec des vêtements simples et des accessoires tels que des bannières et des ogi (éventails pliants), jusqu'aux officiers supérieurs dont le kimono est fait d'un tissu décoratif de la plus haute qualité et qui portent diverses armes militaires, notamment le katana (sabre courbe) et le tachi (sabre traditionnel). Le shaku, sceptre tenu dans la main droite lorsque l'on porte le sokutai, costume de cérémonie traditionnelle de la cour, est également représenté.
