Fair French Modern full brown leather, gilt lettering of title on front board. Heavily water stained, and some chippings on extremities of some pages. A fair copy. 4to. (27 x 20 cm). In French. 63 p. The very rare autographed copy of this lecture given in Lebanon on January 20, 1937, at the Youth Center, by Ostrorog after his serving in China as Assistant High Commissioner, a French diplomat from a noble Polish family, who had served as Assistant High Commissioner in China and Syria in the 1930s. Signed and inscribed by Ostrorog as "Par Mahid, Avec autre au mille amitié, Damas, 1938". On the eve of the Second Sino-Japanese War (1937-1945) between the Chinese and the Empire of Japan which is often regarded as the beginning of World War II in Asia, French ex-Assistant High Commissioner in China Ostrorog gave a lecture about Chinese power and policy. Paris, pièce unique, sans date (circa années 50). Format oblong : 34 x 24,5 cm. Album en plein cuir vert, dos lisse, coutures de cuir en bordure des plats. 15 feuillets avec serpentes. Bel album orné de 50 dessins originaux réalisés à la gouache, à l'encre et au crayon, répartis sur 15 feuillets maintenus par un cordon. Ces projets publicitaires et d'étiquettes sont principalement pour des produits de beauté (crèmes et parfums), de mode (chaussures, semelles et laine) et quelques-uns de cuisine. Un projet comporte le tampon de "Jean Stetten-Bernard / 25 rue Pierre Demours / WAG 69-41 PARIS-XVIIe". Jean Stetten-Bernard (1913-2008) est encore lycéen lorsque Albert Pigasse, ami de la famille et déjà directeur de la collection du Masque quil a créé en 1927, remarque ses talents de dessinateur et lui demande dillustrer les jaquettes des romans policiers publiés dans la collection. Le jeune homme accepte avec enthousiasme et commence à travailler pour le Masque dès 1930. Jean Stetten-Bernard est un autodidacte et il apporte aux illustrations des jaquettes un style nouveau assez épuré : motifs géométriques, larges aplats de couleur faisant ressortir les contrastes Plus tard, il dira navoir subi aucune influence, si ce nest celle de Gus Bofa quil admirait beaucoup et avec qui il était ami dans les années 30. Mobilisé en 1939, Jean Stetten-Bernard est fait prisonnier en juin 1940. Il met alors à profit ses compétences dans le domaine des arts graphiques pour fabriquer de faux ordres de mission allemands qui lui permettent de s'évader, avec huit de ses camarades. Il parvient à passer en zone libre. Le succès de cette évasion, due pour une grande part aux faux documents qu'il a réalisés, l'incite à développer cette activité, principalement au service des résistants, des Juifs à qui il fournit des faux papiers pour les « aryaniser », et des réfractaires au STO, ces trois ensembles n'étant pas disjoints. Il prend pour pseudonyme « Articles de pêche ». Compte tenu de l'étendue de ses activités, il est répertorié dans le fichier des résistants du Ministère des Armées sous la double appartenance aux Forces françaises combattantes (FFC) et aux Forces françaises de l'intérieur (FFI). En 1945, Jean Bernard ouvre lagence de publicité J.S.B. (Jean Stetten-Bernard) quil dirigera jusquen 1993.
